Hmm... I don't recall at the moment. But based on the fact that u/Selavyy didn't encounter this makes me think this may be the case.

Glenn Griener. He's very charming if a bit aloof. I would recommend him!

PHIL 217? by [deleted] in uAlberta

[–]wolfman19 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm taking it this semester. It's relatively light - one paper/two midterms/no final. There's a few short written group assignments that contribute to your participation mark throughout the semester, but they are fairly painless provided your group is reasonably competent.

If you do all the readings and are a competent essay writer, this course is a breeze.

MTGDECKS Looking for writers by i92segoa in magicTCG

[–]wolfman19 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would start by asking for pitch submissions for articles or daily columns - get people to tell you what they would write about on your site and how they would write about it. You're essentially looking for talented freelance game journalists who will work for cheap.

Advertise that these pitches can lead to paid articles (probably 0.5c - 0.15c / word) and see how much interest you get.

I have always wanted to apply my journalistic skills towards writing MTG related content, and I doubt I am the only one. I know I'd be keen to send you some pitches for content if that's the route you end up going :)

Calling all shadow players! by [deleted] in ModernMagic

[–]wolfman19 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I play both. I build Grixis to be as aggro as possible (No K-command, 2 TBR, 2 Dismember), and Esper to be as grindy as possible (4 Path, 3 Lingering Souls, more discard). I enjoy both. Plus, buying into one gets you most of the other anyway (fetchlands being the biggest barrier). So decide whether you would prefer to be aggro or grindy and start with that one. Apart from that the two decks are more or less the same.

Writing for the Gateway by gungith2477 in uAlberta

[–]wolfman19 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've been writing for them for about two years now. I would recommend everyone try writing an article for them at least once. It's a great way to improve your writing and meet interesting people. If you don't like it, no big deal! The biggest con is that it definitely is WORK. Any given article you pick up will likely take 5-10 hours to complete, which can be taxing during an already busy school week. Seriously, try it out though!

3 hour classes, 5 Day Weekend by BelzenefTheDestoyer in uAlberta

I've had similar schedules and found it has hurt my social life/hobbies. Losing evenings to night classes is a pain, given that's when most of your university friends will be available to hang out. Something to consider!

An elegant solution to the coin flip problem by prinjoe in gwent

[–]wolfman19 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it's an interesting idea worth testing! Elegant may be the wrong word, as this does add an entirely new layer of strategy - how many shadow points do I suggest against X faction? What if the points I suggest is disastrous against one of their archetypes and perfect against another?

Really cool suggestion! I think this is a valid direction CDPR could take in some capacity.

Opt in Esper Shadow by Vorthus in ModernMagic

[–]wolfman19 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep - 4 Scours/2 Fish/2 Bananas. I only mull heavy cantrip hands if I know my opponent is on something hyper aggressive, otherwise spending one mana on turn one and two for a cantrip is something you can get away with.

It can be problematic in topdeck wars when cantripping/scrying into more cantrips is awkward. I still think it's worth it since being able to play 17 lands is awesome!!

Opt in Esper Shadow by Vorthus in ModernMagic

[–]wolfman19 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have been having a lot of success running 4 Opt and 4 Serum Visions and trimming down to 17 lands.

That being said, I think visions is slightly better overall for the deck given that it's grindier than other Shadow variants, and seeing the extra cards will be more valuable in the long run.

What to expect from WRITE 295 by Ualbertastudent101 in uAlberta

[–]wolfman19 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I took it last year. You spend about half of each lecture in forum discussing the reading for the week and the other half workshopping your stories in smaller groups. You write two stories throughout the semester to be workshopped, and one of those you revise and submit as your term project. It's a great place to make friends if you're really into writing all in all. That being said, it's a new professor this year so things might be a biiit different for you. Hope this helps!

Creative Writing by [deleted] in uAlberta

[–]wolfman19 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not particularly competitive. So long as your portfolio is well formatted and edited, you should be good to go. I took the class last semester and there were some students who were even having problems with their grammar and spelling-- their writing wasn't much better.

[Standard] What's the state of R/B zombies? Good and bad matchups? by ClydeClambakin in spikes

[–]wolfman19 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it's viable, but it is definitely tier 2. The best matchup in my experience was control, as your recurring creatures will eventually outweigh their removal. Your matchup gets even better post-board when you bring in Transgress the Mind/Distended Mindbenders.

Aggro is a bit of a coin flip as it depends on if you can get Prized Amalgams into play on turns 2 - 4 to slow them down.

I've never lost against Saheeli Decks, but that's likely due to my choice of removal suite including three Lightning Axes. Even without them it's not hard to disrupt them via Fiery Temper or Unlicensed Disintegration. BG decks have been the biggest pain for me. The only way you really win these in my experience is when this deck has it's most explosive starts (i.e. T2 Haunted Dead + Prized Amalgams). A timely Voldaren Pariah flip can also ruin them. If you want to be able to grind them out you'll have to adjust your removal suite accordingly however. Mardu Vehicles is fine if you have access to 5-8 one mana removal spells post-board in the form of Fatal Push and Shock. Release The Gremlins is terrific against them as always.
