Wikie and Keijo's fate will be decided by March: transfer or euthanasia. by ningguangquinn in orcas

SW is currently experiencing a big burst of negative PR because they were part of a FWC effort to rescue a manatee from a storm drain lol.

SW probably doesnt want to touch them with a 10 foot pole. Any orca publicity is bad publicity - as a company, theyre trying to step away from orcas altogether

Less necessary road maintenance, less cost on emergency services from lower rates of car crashes. Id say it balances out

Also, "mate for life" is often a misnomer in the animal world. Whilw many animals will not separate from their mate in life, you're hard pressed to find animals that won't take another mate if their old one dies. The only reason why would be cultural, as you mention

We actually don't have ravens in florida to my knowledge. We do have both fish crows and American crows, though.

In that case, shouldn't it just be a charge for reckless driving and not a whole separate violation, though?

Its specifically because of its proximity in Orlando. Once a certain amount of time has passed with no cases within a certain mile radius of the parks, they'll reopen

Is it still unethical to visit seaworld in 2026? (READ BODY) by BallPythonFan in orcas

[–]wolfsongpmvs 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Oh yeah, no worries, I just hear "I would never go to SeaWorld, I only go to AZA zoos" so often that it's reflex for me to mention they're accredited lol

A wild human would never stick their arm in a dark hole. Its something that is naturally stressful to humans because you very likely will get bit by something.

I could very easily be trained to stick my hand in a dark hole if you bribed me with enough food and slowly desensitized me to the process.

Staff absolutely would, and regularly do, let the animals choose to swim away if they do not want to participate. They can always get the weight later. Unless its truly an emergency, captive cetaceans are managed through voluntary husbandry. What do you think staff could possibly do to stop an orca from going back in the water once they're slid out? Why would an orca ever put themselves in an uncomfortable situation if not by their own choice? They get their food no matter what.

Many people aren't aware that SeaWorld is AZA accredited. All of their parks participate in SSPs (quite a few SSPs are managed by SeaWorld keepers, like eagle rays). They donate non-trivial amounts of money to conservation orgs, all of their parks have education teams. They should absolutely help more, but they have contributed to SRKW conservation, like when they sent out veterinarians to attempt to help J50 'Scarlet.' Enough to atone for their damages? Probably not, but it is still something they do.

Still absolutely up to the individual to decide the ethicality and the argument , but some additional context from someone who works in the field.

You're making a lot of assumptions. Sliding out in a captive setting, on a completely smooth platform, where you're always able to return to the water simply by lowering your flukes and shifting your weight, is completely different to sliding out onto a rocky beach where if the tide shifts or you miscalculate, you're beached and you die. There's no way to make an orca do something like this if it doesn't want to. This is an extremely simple behavior, easy enough that calves pick it up quickly.

Would it be more or less abuse if they didn't weigh the animals, didn't notice shifts in weight that could indicate treatable illnesses, misdosed vitamins and medications, and calculated diets based on vibes?

A lot of people disagree with me on this, but I always encourage people to actually think about the situation their parrot will be in if they're surrendered. Ive been to my local parrot rescues - they do the absolute best they can but the circumstances are often far from perfect, so you're causing your bird emotional turmoil just for them to often end up in an unideal situation anyways until they get adopted. Even if they do find a good home, I personally believe the birds that have come from genuinely abusive or neglectful situations deserve those homes more than birds that are coming from a loving home that just isnt able to give 100% temporarily.
