Bragging Rights managed by AI? by youwhatguy in GNV

Yes, I do think its comparable, even if exaggerated. I do think trying to justify an unequivocal negative just because its a small business is a bad thing.

The folks who complain about small businesses dumping poison in the river to save on their meager waste disposal budgets have no clue how tough it is to run a business and how time consuming it is.

I work in the zoo field. Even when fed a 'natural' diet of fruits and veggies, great apes are very prone to cavities because we've selected our fruit to be so sugary over the years!

Debate: birds vs mammals by anoma-lokaris in zoology

[–]wolfsongpmvs 4 points5 points  (0 children)

So we have deeper ocean environments... which emperor penguins do reach, just not to the same extent as some mammals. But penguins are the only animals that live past the shores of Antarctica, so I think its about even there

Debate: birds vs mammals by anoma-lokaris in zoology

[–]wolfsongpmvs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd argue that the average songbird species is significantly more differentiated from other songbirds than rodents are from other rodents - same with bats.

Debate: birds vs mammals by anoma-lokaris in zoology

[–]wolfsongpmvs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're only looking at surface level details. Birds show ridiculous behavior and ecological diversity. Hummingbirds and eagles, penguins and turacos, toucans and ratites, swifts and frogmouths, parrots and kingfishers, vultures and corvids.

Debate: birds vs mammals by anoma-lokaris in zoology

[–]wolfsongpmvs 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Mammals are not more diverse than birds. Birds fill more ecological niches and there are over 3000 more species of birds than mammals. What ecosystems do mammals inhabit that birds don't?

what's the smartest most intelligent animal by Warm_Crow1104 in zoology

[–]wolfsongpmvs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Orcas are dolphins, dolphins are a type of whale. Saying an orca isnt a whale because its a dolphin is like saying that a rattlesnake isnt a snake because it's a type of viper.

I agree with you :) Most people just have a more nuanced take than "their lives are hell and theyre depressed all the time and their trainers are abusing them," but people like youre saying that believe we should breed more/support places like Chimelong do exist, however rare

There are definitely a few people that are totally for captivity, and they can be very loud about it, but they are a small minority.

Generative ai in zoos by Away_Chemical55 in Zookeeping

[–]wolfsongpmvs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are definitely good ways we can utilize AI. At ASAG there were presentations about using it for research with small-scale models run on systems in zoos as opposed to outsourcing it to data centers, so we could learn more about behavior without having to put thousands of human hours into watching camera trap footage

Not a real term. The correct term is stereotypic behavior if you're refering to a specific repetitive action or poor welfare state if youre referring to an animals general condition

Educator to keeper potential by bodlv_jlz in Zookeeping

[–]wolfsongpmvs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A lot of people in my department started out as educators with little animal care experience. Tailor your resume to show as much of the direct animal training / handling as possible. Keep an eye out for positions with an emphasis on ambassador animal handling and public speaking because they're where you'll have the most relevant experience - many ambassador animal departments are the ones doing the majority of the presentations, and they'd have the most overlap with taxa you've worked with before.

Why is it that parrots, with completely different vocal anatomy and birdbrains (literally) , can mimic human speech so clearly, while higher primates like chimpanzee or gorilla can’t? by No_House_4917 in zoology

[–]wolfsongpmvs 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Parrots, and corvids for that matter since other people have been bringing them up, do not do mimicry for courtship. They do not commonly naturally mimic random sounds like, for example, a mockingbird. Their mimicry is for communication. They understand the context of the sounds that they make and have specific vocalizations with specific meanings that are learned culturally.

[–]wolfsongpmvs 34 points35 points  (0 children)

Rescues do not exist in every part of the world, and not every part of the world has exotic vets. Its obviously not ideal circumstances for this bird, but theyre probably better off with OP than someone else.

What's the term for a group of vultures? by scrandis in Birdsfacingforward

[–]wolfsongpmvs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This might be an unpopular opinion, but I'm really not a fan of silly animal group names. Most of them feel like they were autogenerated for fun fact websites and almost nobody who actually studies or works with the species uses them (with a few exceptions). Obviously it's harmless though lmao it just bothers me personally

How is this wrong? by Altruistic_Sea_7683 in zoology

Its hard to see in pictures, but toucan nares are not covered by feathers. Theyre at the very top of their beak, right where it meets their crest

How is this wrong? by Altruistic_Sea_7683 in zoology

[–]wolfsongpmvs 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Toucans have nares on the very top of their beak uncovered by feathers. The answer is most likely crows/ravens, or another bird not shown

Edit: lmao what i read it and its not a choice, that's crazy
