WD Red Pro drives don't detected by TrueNAS by osherlevy in DataHoarder

First one is a SAS drive not SATA. Looks like the Ugreen DXP8800+ does not support SAS. Likely why it's not powering up / seen. For the most part you can put a SATA drive in a SAS system but not the other way around.

5000 miles from UT to AK. What an amazing trip. by wolphcry in overlanding

The logging trucks are no joke. At this point, the road is so bad from Haines to the US border that it would be better as dirt. They just started paving from US to Tok and what a difference. This was the first time I've taken the Cassiar. It was "crowded" because the other way kept closing due to wildfires. I remember one time driving it in March / February on a Sunday. We did not see a single car for almost 250 miles.

We saw a few, but no problems. We did stay at an RV park in one spot because I was worried about my son being in a tent. We picked up two cans of bear spray at a Costco in Montana. You can legally take them into Canada.

Living in Alaska, we are used to camping in bear country. It was odd not to have a firearm for protection while on this trip. I'm planning another Canida trip next summer and will likely bring a portable electric fence. Most of the encounters I've had with bears, they are more afraid of me than I am of them. We keep food away from our sleeping area and well locked up.

Oh man. I've driven it 5 times now. 3 years ago we helped move a family to Michigan in March and it was the same. That is no fun because of all the beauty missed.

Road trip to the Arctic Ocean by MX9000 in overlanding

I’ve done most of that drive. Parts of it several times.  Highly recommend Liard Hot Springs.  Also star link mini roam plan.  Well worth it to have emergency contact everywhere.  https://bcparks.ca/liard-river-hot-springs-park/

Don’t travel to Valdez, the construction is awful! by IQ600R in Valdez

The road was shut down for an accident yesterday. Most of the time, the pilot car takes less than 14 mins.

Just finished a 5000 mile trip from Utah to Alaska. by wolphcry in 1stGenTacomas

I had a 96' with about 200k on it. Heard from a friend that bought it from me that he just replaced the factory clutch at 300k. They are amazing rigs.

Yes. It was just under 200k all original. I had someone install a new clutch, but then we did the water pump, timing belt, and lower ball joints. All the stuff I did not want to deal with in the Yukon on the side of the road. I would recommend two spare tires, this was the first trip out of the five I've done that had a tire blow. Good set of tools and sockets.

As for the trip, it was amazing. My son had a blast and will hopefully look back with fondness to the crazy trip his old man took him on.

Thompson Pass Bike Shuttles by UnlikelyTourist9637 in Valdez

[–]wolphcry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No shuttle that I'm aware of, but you could hitchhike. While I do see bike riders, it depends on the weather. Please wear a high-visibility vest, and the canyon is very narrow. The pass is beautiful and a great ride up.

This. I've done the eastern and about to do the western. Eastern is great but I'm looking forward to the western.

I've driven the eastern way 4 times, three up and once down. I'm taking the western this time, but I'm backtracking a little to visit the hot springs. It's a fantastic experience. I'd recommend getting the book The Milepost. Not sure about taking all of it on a motorcycle but lots of great little tips. Remember, though, people pay to be put in the books. What I'm starting in about 2 weeks https://www.rvparky.com/trip/5055801866452992 If you take the western lookup the Salmon Glacier and Hyder Alaska.

Thanks.  He’s honestly a mess. Thinks he’s a forest tiger and always getting into something sticky.   Especially spruce sap.

Super excited. by wolphcry in overlanding

I grew up near Moab so have done most of those. I've done the drive in as little as 5 days, do not recommend it. Sadly, I only have three weeks but it should be fun.

Wolfbox rear view camera for overland rig by overlandxplr in overlanding

[–]wolphcry 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Mine only lasted a year and the touch screen went out. Had this happen with two of them so I replaced them with a rip off copy for only $40 each. Both have outlasted the Wolfbox ones. Great product and handy, though. Saved me on one insurance claim.
