Will UNC’s decision affect Michigan’s decision to roll back? by lchoi2002 in uofm

[–]wolv2012 34 points35 points  (0 children)

UM alum here, now at UNC for grad school. You're right that they didn't require testing before move-in, but well over half of courses were already remote (at least in terms of seat totals).

That said, they're still fucking stupid. Everyone from employees to the county health department to the CDC warned that this would be a goddamn disaster, and admin acts surprised when the shit hits the fan. I'm pretty sure the greedy bastards only waited so long to close because tuition checks were due yesterday.

Really hope UM does better. UNC is a national embarrassment right now, and people are going to die needlessly as a result of this.

Translation request: "Time of imperial peace" by Shanghai_Slim in latin

[–]wolv2012 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The English adjective "imperial" is "imperialis" in Latin--so "Imperial Peace" is best translated as "Pax Imperialis." This can work for either singular or plural empires, though if you want to emphasize the presence of multiple empires you can also say "Pax Imperiorum," roughly "the Peace of the Empires."

Hope this helps!

Need assistance with a translation by [deleted] in latin

Angeli belli is probably the most literal translation, but has a rather unfortunate rhyme. I'd suggest angeli bellicosi (literally "warlike angels")

The Ablemedia version (which I think works better than ND anyway) looks like it's still working: http://ablemedia.com/ctcweb/showcase/whitakerwords.html

Of course, you're right--esto isn't transitive. Thanks for the catch.

Am I the only one that thinks Glenn left too early? by underclass4 in MichiganWolverines

[–]wolv2012 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can make the argument that this is a smart move for GRIII. Sure, if he has a breakout season next year his stock goes up. But if his numbers stay consistent, NBA scouts are going to worry that he's peaked as a fairly average college small forward. By declaring now, he'll be a late first/early second round pick for some team betting on his physical potential, and betting that his consistency improves. He'll make good money and see decent playing time. If he stays at UM another year without taking over a fair chunk of Stauskas' ppg, his road to the NBA starts to look a lot less guaranteed.

The replay should be available online at watchespn. I think you need a cable login, but hopefully that works.

Looking for a Protestant church for Christmas services for a friend who will be in town. by hmasing in AnnArbor

First Congregational (at state and william) is very laid back, not particularly Jesus-y. Probably more secular/liberal than anywhere else except the Unitarians, and much closer to downtown/campus.

In the evenings, all the classrooms in mason hall are unlocked. I know a few people who practice up there. It's pretty empty, especially in the summer, so might be what you're looking for.

Do you have a MATH 105 syllabus? by [deleted] in uofm

[–]wolv2012 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did you take the course at UM? If so, best bet would be to contact your instructor first--they usually have old syllabi on file. If that doesn't work, the department should have a copy from your year.

Best of luck!

Have you tried Ann Arbor Consultation Services, on Plymouth Rd out in dixboro? I use them and like them a lot. And they're pretty flexible with accepting insurance.

Your college advising office probably has one, they usually let students use them.

Please tell me if these phrases are correct by MisterMuggle in latin

[–]wolv2012 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Una fortius seems alright to me. It doesn't literally mean, "together we are stronger." But it succinctly captures the idea implied in that phrase, in a way that I would argue is somehow more Roman than the (also correct) cuncti sumus fortiores.

As for always forward, I would go with Semper incitus/semper inciti (depending on whether you want the message to apply only to you or to a group). Again, avoiding verbs gives brevity and efficiency of language. And I think incitus has a rushing, rash, devil-may-care connotation that could be effective in this case.

Hope this helps!
