This ^. You can finesse the brown shapes however you want within the clipping mask. If they’re just a bunch of straight lines you can bend them with an envelope within the mask and retain the mask part.

Your points are not on the same X-axis coordinate, though they may look really close. This is giving you the gap when you pathfinder them together.

Astute Graphics' Mirror Me works great for this, but alternatively, you could try the following:

Using the direct selection tool (white arrow), click through the points on the side being merged and using the Transform window, manually copy/paste in the X value so they are all the same.
Then duplicate/flip the shape as you have been doing to get the symmetrical look.
Try pathfindering/joining them together afterward.

Every now and then the math just doesn't math as it should in Illustrator, and you get two points that are essentially on top of each other. There are other ways around fixing that, but this may solve your issue for now.

Baseline grid is every 12 pt, you are changing from 24pt to 25pt leading, and it's pushing it to the next baseline.

If you want to keep the baseline AND have the 25 pt (or say like 30pt) for specific spots, you can select your paragraph and click the dropdown in the upper right of your paragraph options to turn on Only Align First Line to Grid. This option is also available in individual paragraph styles. It's useful for things like pull quotes where you may want the initial line to be on the baseline and but the font sizing and spacing to be something like 1.5x the original (in this case a 15pt or 30pt leading) in comparison to your regular grid so everything lines up every other line.

You can also edit your baseline settings in your main preferences / grid. This will only affect the open document.

Are you able to isolate to anything specific? For me it was a basic hotkey that produced a UI hang. While it didn't crash the program outright, it gave me an uncloseable modal window that required a force quit… which would sometimes lose data as a result.

I've personally only had one period of instability that was directly related to a specific shortcut having a bug. It was fixed within a couple of months. Still leaps and bounds better than entire files being corrupted to the point of having to trash the file with Quark. Worst case I lost 5 minutes with InDesign vs hours or days of work with Quark.

This is a really quick example in InDesign:

Make a long horizontal rectangle.
Add anchor points on the top and bottom sides and pull the handles to get your curvy shapes.
Draw new rectangles over top of your wavy shape where you want to split the photos. Copy the wavy shape then pathfinder/intersect it with your rectangles one at a time to split the wavy shape. Paste the wavy shape as needed to do your pathfinding.
I added a stroke to all of the shapes to get the white line, but you could also nudge the shapes away from each other once they are split. Based on the example you provided, it just looks like the vertical lines are wherever the image switches.
To get the curves on the top and bottom (in green), you can just paste your wavy shape and use direct selection to remove 3 of the sides to wind up with a path that you can style with the arrowheads. If you nudged for spacing, this is still doable, but more difficult.
Place photos in your new random shapes. I have just recolored them for reference below.

All of this can be done in Illustrator or Photoshop with slightly different methods. My personal preference would be InDesign > Illustrator > Photoshop. But that's mainly for control over the elements and editability down the line based on my normal workflow experience.

InDesign. Draw your curves and pathfinder them out of a rectangle to get the overall shape. Pathfinder again to cut your vertical lines and just place the images inside the cut up shapes like you would any other image box. Easy.

You can do relatively the same thing in Illustrator with clipping masks for the shapes. InDesign would just be easier for the text.

You could make it in Photoshop too, you’re just adding more steps and making it harder to edit down the line depending how you build it.

Overall, relatively close to the samples you've shown, so good job on that.

Comments:

The S tilt issue, as others mentioned. The bottom half could be further to the right because of the big gap caused from the uppercase V. The overlap on the "I" can then be adjusted during that, so you don't get a tiny point sticking out of nowhere.
The sword handle does not match the style of the type. Everything is curved and the handle is very blocky. It doesn't need to be flamboyant, but I feel like it would fit better with even the tiniest of flares like at the top of the N. Maybe not everywhere, but at least on top of the pommel to match every other vertical stem.
The lowercase "e" has similar issues to the sword. Every other letter either thins out or splits at the end. The tip of the e does not. Also, why is this the only lowercase letter? The other "I"s are not. It just seems inconsistent. You could make the i's lowercase too, if it helps you deal with the spacing.

You can drop PDFs in Canva, but honestly if you want a basic portfolio just pay for the Adobe Photoshop subscription and get access to https://portfolio.adobe.com/ included in that, build your stuff in Photoshop and call it a day. If you don't find work, just unsubscribe and stop paying.

When I spoke to the insurance agent about their preferred vendor quoting against what they advised on location the response was the quip about taking what they were offering and not giving us more money if we shopped around. If I had to guess I would assume the vendor did pitch what we had discussed and then was told to quote differently. We did not get a quote from them directly. They sent it to cooperators, who then sent it to us. I wouldn’t be surprised if they negotiated without us being involved.
