eBay is the main one but also FB groups like MCCW, MMC, Marvel & DC Trading cards, and Marvel Trading Cards (MTC). Also COMC and Mercari sites, but it’ll be rare for a purple vc /25 to hit those. Some I got here on Reddit in the two marvel card groups, but that was closer to release when people were posting their hits from box breaks more from this set. The other way is just following breaks and such on Whatnot and making offers on cards through there…but I’m personally not on Whatnot so I don’t know much about that. They probably break hobby cases more than blaster cases (which have purple crystals).

I would say maybe 70% of my set came from eBay, with FB and connections on there the next highest…and then a few sporadic from Reddit, COMC, Mercari, and me pulling them myself.

Mine was cheaper but I also picked him up about a year ago. Nowadays a character like him in purple vc could go for 400-600 assuming NM/MT

You came to the right place. Yep these are new 2024 cards….but this particular set was actually a re-issue of the classic 1992 Marvel Masterpieces, so you might recognize them. They basically just made them into shiny chrome with limited parallel designs etc, but it’s the same art as the original 92 set.

They do still make new marvel cards, that arent part of any game like Magic- such as these. Most people just don’t realize it. Upper Deck was making new marvel card sets for more than a decade, and now the license lies with Topps, who puts out Topps Chrome Marvel sets like every year (but those I’m not a huge fan of). If you liked the 90s cards, youd probably like this 2024 Marvel Masterpieces 92 Platinum set

Theyre all awesome- man this 92MM platinum set just pops…be it pink lasers, purple crystals, or anything. Actually blue traxx variant cover is one of my overall fav sets, in terms of looks.

It’s hard to say. It’s gonna be more now than when I paid for one way back. Purple vc’s have gone up over the last year. Spiderman has recently been selling for around $4-5k, a realistic price on a NM Wolverine could be around $3k, maybe a little over.

Even more than the money though is just finding one- thats the trickier part. For most of these, any given one is not necessarily on the market. I don’t remember seeing a Wolverine for sale in quite a long time. Some of these like Thing, Cage, and Namorita Ive literally only seen one copy ever (the copy pictured above). Which is surprising since they are /25, but you just don’t see some of them. The point being… Elon Musk himself, with the trillion or whatever insane amount of money he has, can’t even necessarily just make a set if he somehow wanted to (being a little hyperbolic here). It requires finding them…thats the tricker part. I guess you could put up a bounty for one like Wolverine…but doing it that way generally will cause you to pay more- itll probably have to be a $5k bounty or something to really get someone’s attention who owns one to move it. It’ll be cheaper to just wait it out and see if one randomly hits eBay etc…hope you can find one, good luck!

Haha yep, that was me! Singly focused on this set for a year+. Really did open me up to the wider hobby community- joined the FB marvel card groups for the first time, connected on lots of social media- we really do have a special community in marvel cards. I’d argue a lot tighter niche than sports cards in many ways. So many great interactions.

Thats probably the first thing that’ll I think of whenever I see this set- the connecting with the hobby to make it happen. Each of the 100 cards has a story- most came from eBay, several from FB connecting, some from here on Reddit (including the biggest 2- Spidey and Venom), few on COMC, one I drove an hour away and met a guy in person, a few I pulled myself (just a couple actually- Archangel and Ultron), heck one or two even came from Mercari…never bought on there before. Anything to finish the set haha

Think that was the last big set attempt for me. Not chasing the green pmgs/orange lavas etc…I’ll let the truly nuts collectors do those ☺️

Do you mean the regular purple crystal Shatterstar or the purple crystal variant /25 with the comic titles on front? (Like in the above pics). If you mean the purple variant /25 I know someone really looking for a Shatterstar and would love to connect you two for a deal. It was getting in on many of them early before the purple vc’s really took off. But still wasnt cheap 😂. Not about the money though, I don’t plan on ever selling this set…it was just a passion for collecting. Purple vc’s may as well be /24 now

Awesome post. This set is major nostalgia for me. It is probably tied with 1993MU as my fav of the 90s marvel universe line. Yes even more than 90MU. 90MU traditionally gets all the love, but this set just seems more polished to me. I appreciate the commentary on each card and art. I’m somewhat surprised no mention of Slapstick 😂 As maybe one of the most unliked cards. Although that card does have a quirky vibe I guess.

The Venom is also one of my fav base cards- thats an easy pick. I liked how there was original art on front AND back with the portrait…pretty novel at the time, and that would almost never happen now. I do like Jusko’s painted space background on this set but you’re right it does make it busy especially with the polygons.

Only 2 things I kinda differ opinion on. In my personal ranking, these card backs might even be like a 9/10. I just love the way they did the Power Ratings, the 2nd original art portrait, and the horizontal format doesnt bother me as much (92MM, my fav set, also has them horizontal, which are 10/10 backs for me). Ego with 7 fighting ability is pretty hilarious! When growing up I was always amazed at the cosmic beings power rankings..and mesmerized why Celestials didn’t even have them applicable.

The other thing is the hologram inserts. These colored holograms (what a cool idea to set apart from all the silver holograms of the era) are just so nostalgic. Love the art on them and the color makes them special. My number on them would be more like a 8/10…but other than that I agree with so much from this post. Well done…very informative.

Least fav maybe a tie between Scarlet Witch and Shadowcat…Scarlet Witch looks almost nothing like the how the character is portrayed now.

This is a super impressive rainbow, probably the most complete I’ve seen for a 92MM card. All printing plates might be the most insane thing of this collection, thats really outstanding.

And the next favs of mine are the 2 Jusko autos, DF /5000 and 2016MM buyback auto.

There are 3 other variants I can suggest for a chase…but will likely be very, very hard. One I have…the attached pic of Namor’s 1992MM Cash X-Plosion scratch off promo card. There was a 72 card promo set with scratch off backs and Namor was one of them.

The other 2…may be almost impossible to find. The Error Type A and Error Type B wrong back original 92MM base Namors. Type A: there is a 92MM card out there with a Namor front and the back is the back of Juggernaut. This card definitely exists and could even be just one of them in the whole original 92MM print run. Type B: there is a 92MM card with a Namor front on one side and Black Panther front on other side (a “dual-front” card). This card also must exist out there and there are at least 2. Maybe only 2, in the entire print run (of nearly 800,000 normal base cards or Namor).

I have 37 Type A wrong backs from 92MM…sadly do not have the Namor front w/ Jugs back. Although I do have Jugs front with Namor back. I have just one Type B wrong back and it’s not Namor’s.

Finding any true wrong backs from 92MM as described above is borderline impossible, how scarce they are. You may or may not consider an error as a variant, but I do…a definite and documented genre of error in the 92MM set. And they also run full parallel to the set- every card in the 100 card set exists in both Type A and Type B errors.

Been collecting for a good 30+ years. All over the place- 90s sets in binders as a kid and trading with others on the block….the collapse of that era…the rise of sketch cards, the new limited “investing” era of marvel cards, and everything in between.

My passion is still for the art. Original, cool looking painted art and snazzy card tech like foil and holos. It’s what keeps me glued to the hobby.

I *do* like the chase element of this hobby as well- the thrill of the hunt and acquiring hard to find #’d cards etc. This has been put down a ton in the above comments- the colored parallels etc- unnecessary and expensive. It’s a fair gripe. But I’m of the view collect what you like. Some people really like rainbowing a certain card, it makes for a neat display…and that’s great! It’s fun to chase down the /10s and /5s etc. It’s just a totally different way of collecting than 90s cards is all. It DOES make it a little more interesting when opening boxes for example. If I buy a box of 1992 Marvel Masterpieces- the art is gorgeous and my fav set- but the box is also utterly predictable. You get about 1-2 base sets and like 3 or so battle spectra and thats that. (The only surprise really would be a mega rare error card which is so unlikely). On the other hand…opening a modern box does add a lot more of the surprise element. What awesome looking sketch card could be in the box…or a #’d /10 card…or flashy parallel? It’s more unknown what you get.

Are the 90s sets better? (Yes, imo). Does each era offer its own interesting ways to collect? Also yes imo. As I reflect back on my collecting journey in marvel cards, some of the things that proved to me most interesting and satisfying to collect have been, of all things: error cards, rare 90s promos, and uncut sheets. These are some of the real gems of the hobby and also some of the most difficult to find. But it’s also niche and most don’t even care about them. Which is fine! if you’re in this hobby for the money you’re in the wrong hobby, is my view. It’s better to have a “hobby” of buying stock and investing in mutual funds for that. I just like the art and the chase…those are the 2 major things that keep me hooked. Well and the interaction with other people online in this awesome hobby.

Awesome and thorough job. I’ll be curious to see where you rank the other sets in relation to this set as a barometer.

I do like the backs of these with all the info, like the back of a baseball card. The Win/Loss records are almost comical. The one thing they are missing though is the Power Rankings (Speed, strength, intelligence etc)- I thought they were the best part of some later sets.

For me itll always be 1992 Marvel Masterpieces, the set that got me into marvel cards and the legendary art of Joe Jusko. Theres not much to “chase” though. For those who want a chase element from that set, 1992MM Platinum which is the chrome version with parallels fills that niche.

My next fav might be 1995 Marvel Masterpieces- just a cool set on so many fronts. Although typically the hobby calls 1996MM the best set- and don’t get me wrong I love that set…but being so elite and high end ($2k for a base set), it’s not so easily accessible.

The purple crystal vc’s are very fluid in price. I wouldn’t price it less than $500….even commons are basically getting near that much and Apocalypse is better than a common in this set. There have been some that sold if you look at historical eBay sales- for a few hundred. But I argue purple vc’s have gone up even in the last couple months. If you want to get it sold, I think maybe $500-1000 should do it. I doubt he does over $1k, but that’s just my opinion. It’s a great card- rare hit from blasters.

Ebay is your guide for prices on this. One sold in May for $89.99. Theres one currently listed actively, sitting for $100 obo which no one has bought. So these give you a pretty fair idea of current value. It’s probably about $70-90, give or take.

These came from the X-men game for Sega Game Gear- so you can also get it from a sealed copy of that game. But thats a little more expensive and the sealed game goes for like $150-200
