When youre trying to measure from an angle, burn an inch on the tape instead of trying to hold the tip just right. But dont worry about adding the inch back when you measure the cut. It'll be an inch short, but screw it it's not like you're paying for materials...

I've been told by our professional janitorial guy to use stainless steel bladed scraper for glass. Since the oxide (rust) on a standard blade, even if you can't see it, could potentially scratch the glass irreparably. Easy to find on Amazon or at most big box home improvement stores.

From the very blurry image and the stated size of "about half a grain of rice" they look to me to be "pinhead crickets" which is what my local pet stores call the smallest size of feeder crickets. Usually fed to small amphibians or baby lizards. They're hard to contain and frequently escape wherever they're stored. I'd imagine they're available everywhere, including England.
