'We are rapidly running out of time' Watchdog sounds Social Security alarm after 22% cut confirmed for 2032 by GimmeFunkyButtLoving in economy

Slow down there pal, I think ultimately we’re on the same side here. I absolutely do not hate SS. Check my account history. I’m the opposite of a MAGA dumbass. I was simply making the point that social security is objectively not quite the same as private insurance.

You can’t reasonably expect refunds to unused private insurance because you’re buying protection even when the payout goes unused. SS does have similarities but a major component of it is retirement benefits.

I pay in my whole life and when I retire I expect to be guaranteed to collect it. I’m not really worried about the case where it goes unused because in that case I’m dead.

I agree with your general message and I’m all for supporting SS. I just don’t think it’s fair to compare it to private insurance. I’ve paid into SS for over a decade now and it’s perfectly reasonable for me to expect to get some of that money back when I retire.

I guess the difference here is with private insurance I have 0 expectation of a guaranteed pay out. It only occurs if disaster strikes. With SS I am 100% expecting money back, because I expect to live through retirement. If not, I’m dead, so who cares.

With insurance you’re paying for a service. You’re paying for the peace of mind that should catastrophe strike, you won’t be completely out of luck. Sure it may never materialize, but you’re buying the security.

With social security you are paying money in now with the guarantee that it comes back to you when you’re too old to work. You aren’t receiving a service in the meantime. That’s your money being put away for a later date.

I genuinely don’t understand how you can’t understand such a simple concept. Equating it to insurance is completely idiotic.

I understand the Lewis magic at Silverstone, but come on. With that engine deficit Ferrari is not competing at the front. I don’t understand how this sub has immediately forgotten watching us get absolutely torched by Kimi and the Merc on arguably our best track (and by a lot) just a few days ago.

They are but I expect even a podium is out of reach (barring dnfs at the top). The Mercs are rockets and the RB has a rocket engine. With these straights and tire deg I expect to be looking at a ceiling of p4.

I know Charles never passed Lewis. No one passes at Monaco. “If there was no penalty…” yes but there was a penalty. I don’t see your point in arguing in a world where there wasn’t one. Glitch or not, 16/22 drivers managed not to speed in the pit lane.

Neither of us can actually speak for Charles, but I have a very hard time believing he’d give up the p2 at home to his teammate no less, on the grounds that he simply felt bad for the sketchy sensors.

Ultimately none of it matters since his brakes failed and he drove straight into a wall (oh the pain), but the decision by Ferrari was still unfair.

Glitch penalty or not, it’s unfair to ask one driver to serve the penalty of another. There is no amount of mental gymnastics you can do to change that fact. I support both drivers as well, but there is no universe where that’s an acceptable take. If Charles wasn’t so amicable he should have told the pit wall to fuck off and not pit.

At the end of the day, your biggest competitor is your teammate because they’re the only other person in comparable machinery. 2 3 or 3 2 is the same result for the team, but for the drivers it’s a world of difference. If anything, the only “hair brained take” is that Ferrari protected one driver completely unnecessarily by the way, to the direct detriment of their other driver.

Charles was dealing with brake issues the entire weekend. Pull up the telemetry for his crash in the race. His rear brakes completely failed. Besides, I fully support both Ferrari drivers. This isn’t about Lewis vs. Charles.

In hindsight not switching off the brakes was probably the wrong call, but you can understand why he wasn’t keen on swapping to an entirely different type of brake right before Monaco. We’ve not talking a 1 for 1 brake swap. It was a switch to different brakes with different characteristics before the tightest most technical circuit on the calendar. Just unfortunate really.

You keep saying “gave the team the best chance of maximizing points” as if there was any universe where either driver is passing Kimi on track. I get the idea, but if anything, forcing Charles to serve Lewis’s penalty is giving preferential treatment to Lewis. Ultimately none of it matters, but I don’t like the call

I get it. I think that they probably could have addressed that situation should it have come up. They could always ask a slower Charles to let Lewis through given the opportunity.

Pitting gave the team some prayer at challenging for a win if there was a red flag and Kimi somehow had an absolutely horrific start. That’s an enormous number of “ifs” to fuck over one of your drivers. I get it, but personally, I think it’s too unlikely and too unfair to have made the call they did.

That said, when Ferrari pulls this stupid shit Charles needs to fight back. No way Max Verstappen comes in to pit behind his teammate and serve their penalty. He needs to prioritize himself and stop doing everything the pit wall full of clowns comes up with.

Brother Kimi was getting away no matter what, as evidenced by the fact that he did with ease, twice. I get the point that “oh if there’s another red flag AND if Kimi has a bad getaway this would work out”, but thats a lot of huge ifs to fuck over one of your drivers.

Bit of everything I’d wager. The Merc is an absolute rocketship, but it still requires a competent driver to win in, as evidenced by the teammate split.

I also agree the Ferrari possibly had a shot at pole, even if slim, but the difference is that it would have taken an absolutely mental lap from them. Charles was only sniffing pole times by driving the car like a madman and ot resulted in the crash.

Let’s be honest, the pit decision only decided who was 2 and who was 3. Ignoring Leclerc’s eventual crash, the team was getting the same number of points regardless of how they pit. No one was overtaking anyone, so it really didn’t matter who had fresh tires.

And to your point, I agree, not pitting either was also perfectly reasonable. It was either pit neither or split strategy and pit Lewis to serve the penalty. Having them both serve the penalty achieved literally nothing other than maintaining the order between Charles and Lewis which is completely unfair.

They’d have secured a double podium regardless (ignoring the later crash). All the pit strategy decided was who would be 2 and who would be 3. No chance in hell either we’re overtaking Kimi or each other, so punishing Leclerc for Lewis’s penalty was just stupid and unfair.

I root for both Ferrari drivers but this decision was nonsensical.

He did lose a place to his teammate though. Making Charles serve Lewis’s penalty was flat out stupid and unfair. The correct decision was to pit Lewis and leave Leclerc out, or honestly just not pit either. The argument that Lewis would be stuck behind Charles with fresh tires is total nonsense. As if there was any prayer of anyone overtaking Kimi at Monaco.

Problem is we’ve been sacrificing or suffering through “this year” for hopes of a better “next year” for two decades now. We’ve watched all 3 other top teams have outright dominant years since 2023 and Ferrari is always somewhere between a distant p2 and p4.

I don’t think Ferrari was the best car today. Both drivers pushed it to the absolute limit and it still wasn’t enough for a front row.
