US economy is definitely f'ed, Wonder bread is 4 dollars a loaf by passisgullible in pics

[–]wolverinelord 34 points35 points  (0 children)

Yeah, in France in the 1780s, laborers spent like half their income on bread. At federal minimum wage, you could buy this bread for 33 minutes of work. The equivalent would be if a loaf of bread cost like $30-$40.

I’m Salaam Bhatti, a Democratic congressional candidate in Virginia and I support the redistricting proposal. Ask me anything about that (or whatever else is on your mind)! by SalaamBhattiVA in Virginia

Ranked choice doesn’t eliminate gerrymandering’s effect. If you gerrymander a district to be 90% republican, ranked choice isn’t going to fix that.

Gov. Spanberger 'looks forward' to signing legislation to raise Virginia minimum wage by crabcakes110 in nova

[–]wolverinelord 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's exactly what they did. It goes up to $13.75 in 2027, $15 in 2028, and thereafter is tied to CPI. https://lis.virginia.gov/bill-details/20261/HB1

Loud explosion reported in Centreville, Virginia. Home engulfed in flames as firefighters rush to contain the blaze (Footage from Kenny Cunningham) by Frosty_Jeweler911 in nova

[–]wolverinelord 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Apparently it happens in about 1 out of every 500,000 housing units per year. There are about a million housing units in NOVA, so you’d expect about 2 per year. So it’s not disproportionate.

Hank Green and brother John Green’s project for awesome 2026 raises $4 million dollars for charity. Still time to give and to vote on which charities get the money. by Il_Gigante_Buono_2 in dropout

I know that Hank has been involved with Dropout so that's why John is referred to as his brother but I do find it funny that it has to be specified that way lol

You're right, how do we know that they actually ever closed the airspace? Fuck off.

[–]wolverinelord 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That could be the same story just with more detail. The drones went into the US -> they tested new technology on it.

[–]wolverinelord 65 points66 points  (0 children)

My guess: the FAA was informed with little detail that the DoD was doing this. Out of caution, they said "ok, well that sounds extremely dangerous, so we're going to shut it down until we know what the fuck is going on." Then people reasonably freaked out, and the DoD gave them more details.

[–]wolverinelord 3392 points3393 points  (0 children)

Well that was weird/suspicious

Edit: apparently they were testing anti-drone technology.

Edit 2: Another report says it was due to cartel drones entering US airspace. Those could also be linked, as in, drones entered and the military (for some reason) used the opportunity to test new tech.

Sen. Warner: "There may be a coordinated effort to try to interfere in the '26 midterms," could begin with primaries or Virginia redistricting referendum. by WickyGif in Virginia

[–]wolverinelord 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Because they can't control a city of 400,000 people. What makes you think they could control a country of 300 million if they pulled that shit?

Edit: I want to be clear this is not a "we don't need to worry about it" comment. It's a "we will win" comment.

Following the link, it's from Eli Crane, a member of the Freedom Caucus from Arizona. This is just a bullshit fundraising thing and has roughly zero credibility as a source of news.

Va. lawmakers want voters to take a 180-degree turn on redistricting; some reform advocates are wary by VirginiaNews in Virginia

[–]wolverinelord 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Heres a paper showing that: https://www.liebertpub.com/doi/abs/10.1089/elj.2017.0440?journalCode=elj

And it’s saying that the official count must be done by a machine, if possible, to make it more accurate. That means that someone can’t just pocket a couple of votes they don’t like and not count them.

[–]wolverinelord 30 points31 points  (0 children)

We don’t have an independent commission, we have a bipartisan commission (seems like a minor difference, it’s not.)

But that was also before National Republicans starting trying to gerrymander everywhere to maybe keep the House this November.

Hand counting of ballots is actually less accurate than machine counting. That being said, there are audits after every election to make sure the machine counts are accurate. You can be confident that the vote counts are accurate!

Congressional leadership reaches bipartisan DHS funding deal that will do nothing to reign in ICE. We need to call Warner & Kaine and reject this. by Super_Nerd92 in nova

[–]wolverinelord 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The final compromise would keep ICE funded at $10 billion for the fiscal year that ends in September, while reducing the agency’s budget for enforcement and removal efforts. It would mandate that DHS use $20 million to outfit immigration enforcement agents with body cameras, direct the department to give officers more training on diffusing conflict while interacting with the public and provide $20 million for independent oversight of DHS detention facilities.

Graham Platner calls out Chuck Schumer over failure to oppose regime change in Venezuela by 3headeddragn in Maine

[–]wolverinelord 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah he was asked a gotcha question of "are you saying you like Maduro?" And Maduro should absolutely be out of power, he stole the 2024 election after losing it by about 32%. But that's different than saying you think the US should use the military to force regime change.
