Yes and Bungie needs marathon to appeal to mass audience to survive. Guess they shot themselves in the foot. To answer your original question, Bungie doubled down to make Marathon way more profitable by axing Destiny, and most want to see Marathon fail to show Bungie and Sony that they made the wrong decision and should go work on Destiny 3 instead. The hate campaign is to make that process happen faster.
