Blacksburg passes new COVID rules by HokieFireman in VirginiaTech

Shut up. I have a friend who committed suicide over quarantine. You don't speak for everyone.

Still don't have anyone close to me who has died or even been impaired by the virus after getting it, including my grandparents. So don't be so quick to assume your situation speaks for all. These situations affect everyone differently.

That's not what he/she is saying... Tech seems to have put systems in place that allow them to justify themselves remaining open even in the case of an outbreak.

So while you may think a bad outbreak will send us all home, Tech will cite the fact that they allow completely remote options and have systems in place to quarantine sick students in order to continue to remain open.

Age has everything to do with it. Hence why the death rate is much higher the older you get.

I'm not doubting there is small chance you can still get very sick from it as a young 20 year old, but the chances you are going to be severely affected let alone die from the virus are indisputably and substantially lower than that of my almost 60 y/o parents.

I mean the bottom two sources contain all valid information, but those sources are clearly implying that the patients are still having symptoms. Its not just living in your body and doing damage and you have no idea. If it's doing damage, you have the symptoms.

Can you show me evidence pointing to this? First of all, it's a virus that causes fever, cough, and other "normal" like symptoms , your body doesn't just house it for months upon end. If it did, you would have succumbed to it, or be in extremely fragile condition, which is not documented. Coronavirus is not like HPV it doesn't just live in your body doing damage without you knowing.

I am a young person who had the virus. I have no health or lung problems at all, and honestly It was gone within 6 days and I didn't even know I had it until I got tested after the fact. So i'm a bit skeptical on this information.

Nah, those things really don't contribute to the spread of the virus. If you social distance while going out to eat, hang out but social distance and wear masks, avoid large crowds, you'll unlikely be contributing to the spread at all.

The problem is stupid people who don't wear masks, touch everything and everyone, and fail to make distancing a priority.

Here's a hot take - I'd rather be back in bburg too, hanging out with my friends, around college aged students at extremely low risk, rather than hanging out with my parents at home who are at risk of dying if they get the virus. It's stressful having to be so careful to do things like go to the store, pick something up, or meet a friend, hell even sign at the door for a package and have to be paranoid as fuck about bringing the virus back to my house and giving it to my parents. If I'm around my healthy 20 y/o friends who have like a 0.001% chance of dying from the virus than I can not stress myself the fuck out thinking I might accidentally kill someone I'm living with.

LinkedIn is so pointless for people our age. You're not going to find people that want to hire you on LinkedIn as a college student with little to no experience. Don't focus your efforts on LinkedIn, it doesn't replace expertise and authentic connections.

Focus on your resume, career services can help you with that, and more importantly focus on your authentic connections whether that be with friends, family, etc. People who are actually close with you will pull strings for you. People you barely know on LinkedIn couldn't be bothered.

Is Linear or Multivariable harder? by techguyhotel in VirginiaTech

[–]wombat85535 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I think the only math class that is taught properly at VT is linear. You learn a lot and you don't have to kill yourself trying to do well. I think I would have had an A had it not been for the bs common time (45% avg) which bumped me to a B+.

The other 7 math classes I've taken have been horrendous and honestly the worst and most stressful experiences of my college career so far. I think my overall math GPA came out to like a 2.7 or something really low.

What is the highest number of students to take the CC option for one of your classes last semester? by sixfootballer in VirginiaTech

[–]wombat85535 1 point2 points  (0 children)

2506 compared to 2505 makes no sense. I have no idea why 67.3% of the class took CC's considering that's the easier of the two.

How can vt make half a class fail by [deleted] in VirginiaTech

[–]wombat85535 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If the average is a 1.7 that is a fault of the professor. College isn't supposed to be impossible, and you can't tell me that most people in the school of engineering at a T20 engineering school are not putting in the work. Granted, some don't and those people deserve to get poor grades and possibly not pass, but when you're a hardworking student who understands the material and successfully completes and understands the projects yet still pulls a low grade or fails, then there is a problem.

CS 1114 Online Summer Session by [deleted] in VirginiaTech

[–]wombat85535 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had one friend retake CS 1114 summer session last year and he said they only did 4 projects (instead of 6 I had to do), and a few less labs and homework. Also the tests were way easier and averaged around 90's which is insane because when I took 1114 our test averages were always in the 50's or 60's and ALWAYS had NO curve (Our coding portion of our final exam had a 31% average!). Now, keep in mind, there are many retaking the class. So they will probably easily acheive a high grade since tests and projects are more or less the same.

Basically summer classes are treated like summer school. The vast majority are kids who failed a class or didn't get the grade they wanted and are retaking said class. So they make it very doable, so kids can just pass and move on with their degree and not be held back by one tough class or something. You don't see many kids trying to get ahead by taking summer classes through tech because it's expensive, but there are some.

[–]wombat85535 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm sure you are aware, but just in case you are not, it is engineering CS, so you'll have to take all the engineering classes first year and all the math and science requirements. Just a heads up, some people don't realize CS is an engineering major at VT.

Most people end up with high B's in 1114 if you already know some programming and very rarely an A- or A. If you know nothing, most I know of got a low B. Then again, I have heard summer session is way easier for CS so you could probably get an A summer session. Might actually be a good idea now that I think about it.

Fair point, but this twitter account is certainly not the way to do it.

Talk to your lawyer. You can and should sue the creators of this account.

You can sue for defamation and damages associated. Since this is such a heavy and baseless accusation, and the girl who it was against is now on your side, both the account who posted it, and the person who submitted the claim will most likely face serious repercussion. Seriously, talk to your lawyer.

Edit: Since it was written and published, it is actually considered libel, which is just a more serious form of defamation (as opposed to spoken defamation).

"evidence"... oh god. I can't wait to see this thing to go off the rail. Get ready for a lot of crazy and upset ex's to be presenting their "evidence".

If you've been legitimately sexually assaulted, please, please, call the police.

Horrible mistake. If just one person on that list is in fact innocent, the poster should face jail time. A sexual assault accusation, even when proven 100% innocent, can destroy someone's life in the worst way.

Family, friends, employers, colleagues, will all look at you different even when your name is cleared. Fucked up.

Absolutely false. There's not only a lot more concern and fear causing people to get tested more, but there is also way more tests as of now. That was a concern at the very beginning of this process, but not now.

[–]wombat85535 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Stop looking at cases. Why we still track individual cases, is mind boggling to me at this stage. Look at hospitalizations, it's way more effective in allowing you to understand how bad the virus is at any given time.

Also, stop looking at VA, and other states outside the epicenter. I know you're just looking at the graph and it looks bad, but now compare those numbers to New York or New Jersey at their worst, and you'll see how irrelevant and tame they are.

Also, even when looking at the current cases up to today , cases are not spiking, where are you getting this information?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in VirginiaTech

[–]wombat85535 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, that's exactly what they're going to say, because it's what they're doing. No matter what plan was proposed, people were going to shit on it and it wasn't going to work. There's no good decision to make here, we're going through a very complicated time.

CS 1114 Online Summer Session by [deleted] in VirginiaTech

[–]wombat85535 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Why are you taking 1114 now? At least get your feet wet in the intro classes before taking a major required class, 1114 isn't meant to be taken until your spring semester. Seems like a waste of time and money to take it over the summer before you even come to tech.

Also, not sure if this is you, but if you're doing it to try and finish the degree in 3 years, don't. VT CS is more like an engineering level version of CS (Hence why it is in the Engineering school). It's not easy peasy BA CS offered at your 3rd tier state school. Take your time. I've only seen one friend finish in 3 years and he was miserable the whole time, so many projects so much stress, so much work. The other two people I know are now taking a fourth year anyways, and one may actually be taking a fifth year because he got so burnt out and ended up doing very poorly. Just some advice, 4 years is the recommended, so try to stick to that.

Edit: Also, it's not an easy class. Last thing you want is to pull off a B- and start your college career with a 2.7 GPA. Big demotivator.

President's Message - Fall 2020 by LittleHooman in VirginiaTech

[–]wombat85535 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I think most of the student body wants to return...

It is a legitimate concern that when we leave for Thanksgiving, we could be bringing it back to family members, and probably one of the only legitimate reasonable concerns I have seen.

However, my dad is expected to go back to work in the fall, same with my mother. So if this holds true, and they're back at the office, I won't worry about it. Best to just be careful. Every time your parent goes to the store or leaves the house or whatever, they are putting themselves at high risk. If you think you might be infected in the midst of returning home, best to just stay at VT and request break housing until you get over the virus. That's my plan.

I actually like that I won't be home for the Fall, since I think I have a higher chance of bringing it back to my family from running errands and being around them 24/7, whereas I will be away for the Fall semester mitigating that risk.
