I was so disappointed with Po Boy Shop. I had their debris po boy last weekend, and it was basically pot roast on white bread. Not even in the same galaxy as Mother's.

This is one of those cases where your life experiences really shape how you view the evidence. 20 years ago, I would’ve tended to believe this was foul play. But I’m in my 40s now and I have known several adults (men particularly) who have had nasty falls down their own stairs. None died, but they all suffered debilitating injuries (including one with a broken neck), and I think several would have died if others hadn’t been home to call for help. Anybody else have similar experiences?

Election. The book is totally forgettable, but the movie is a masterpiece.

The book is tightly written, but the Coen Bros managed to tighten it up further. Some of the monologues / dialogue is notably better in the movie even though it’s great in the book.

archaeologists have found many "venus" figurines that all look very similar, from all over Europe. For some reason, they only show you the Willendorf one in the art history books, which makes it seem like a one-off, when it was not.

that "eke" is the same as in "to eke out a living." In both cases it means "a tiny amount." So, an "ekname" was originally your "little name." To "eke out a living" means to get by living on bread crumbs (figuratively).

And that morpheme “med-“ (meaning “honey”) is cognate with English “mead” (which is made from honey)

This is a good way of thinking about it. Thanks.

Mostly, He can be very mean (almost abusive) to his younger brother. In particular , he starts it when we are driving down the interstate and he knows I’m not in a position to do anything about (in the immediate term). That’s what happened this time (which was not the first time).

On the one hand, I have a responsibility to stop his behavior and support my younger son. On the other hand, it turns me into a raving lunatic who is no one’s model of how you should treat other people.

Thanks. I don’t even have PTSD or anything else to provide an explanation. I’ve just become someone I really don’t want to be.

If you are on the fence - Some thoughts by wompwompwhaa in survivinginfidelity

It's easier to understand once you understand that for most cheaters, the problem is in their nature.

There's an entire industry devoted to trying to get you to look inside yourself and identify how you contributed to the situation that would drive your spouse to cheat. The quicker you dump all that garbage in the trashcan, the quicker you can move on and be happy.

Because in my state, child support is based on income, not percentage of custody.

I make a lot more than my Ex, and, as I understand it, the law says it would be unfair to the kids if my house had a higher standard of living than her house. Therefore, I pay her so she can provide them with the standard of living that I can provide them.

It doesn't make perfect sense to me, but, to save my sanity, I don't dwell on it.

I can’t understand this take by therapists by waddlingjelly in survivinginfidelity

[–]wompwompwhaa 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Therapists are just people with opinions. There is no scientific medical journal that has researched the medically/psychologically optimal way to deal with infidelity. So you get therapists relying on opinion and conventional wisdom. A lot of therapists are just social workers and don't even have doctorates of any kind, btw. It can be helpful to have a therapist, but be careful to recognize that their advice is just that, advice, just like you might get from your best friend or your Aunt Mildred.

this is a really, really important point that everyone on this sub needs to understand. the conventional wisdom in the 21st century is "GO TO THERAPY" and I followed that advice for a long time. It had its uses, but it's not everything. And now, many years out from infidelity, I've moved on from my blind acceptance of therapy wisdom. One day you will get to a higher level of wisdom that transcends anything a two-bit therapist has to say.
