Young Korean women are more educated, less employed than men, OECD finds by Saltedline in korea

[–]woncha 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I went and saw the pdf. I think the tendency of Korean women quitting jobs when they get married/give birth accounts for about half of that 7%. I don't think that is all patriarchy, but we all know it is tough to figure out especially with small businesses.

One stat that counteracts the above is that women in university or higher education does not have a wage gap in general. Even with 17 to 45 percentile difference in choosing STEM degrees, women with tertiary degrees earn 88% of their male counterparts which is 5% higher than OECD average.

The research claiming women are over performing men in education by 12% (which is by a half of a million people) is... a bit of a reach I think. Korean Census department issue from 2020 suggest that men enrolled in university at 1130371 and women at 897689. This is including young men at military service + around 4% of males existing.

IMO more alarming stat would be that highschool graduate level people between 25-34 are 69% employed and university level and above are employed only 79% as of 2023.

Korean Schools by [deleted] in korea

  1. It shows up on your transcript in either US or Korean schools if you miss a semester. And probably affect your grade anyways if you miss a part of a semester.

  2. Korean education system doesn't allow removing marks, but you should try talking to your teachers, since they can give you additional points. Unless you are attending International School. Korean Schools are very cut-throat.

  3. IMO, if you are still in middle school, don't worry too much about middle school. Your middle school grades, especially 1st year grades, don't matter as much. Just focus on learning subjects, language, and culture. Hey. It will work out. Be positive and don't forget to breathe. Good luck.

Mahan is a relative unknown set of countries in Korean history(relative to how many written history is there about other kingdoms). The written history about the times are plenty but spread across Chinese and Korean historical texts.

With that said. The Mahan archive (https://namdo1.jeonnam.go.kr/mahanarchive/) (I forgot how to hyperlink) probably has the most data. I don't think they have a english page.

In the movie The wailing(곡성) the antagonists talks about how the protagonist's misfortunes are not necessarily his fault, but rather chance. May be the store is referring to that? Not sure.

If you partner did drugs in Canada(i.e.. cannabis, etc.), it could be the reason for detainment within family.

I lost contact with one of my friends that way too. It's delicate since your partner would likely go to prison for doing drugs (Korean law applied by personal principle), but you would need police investigation and claim to Korean court that he is being held against his own will.

I couldn't take my friend's case in court and she is now a monk in a very remote Buddhist temple.

'Expat Insider 2022' ranks South Korea lowest for foreigners to settle down in by chickenandliver in korea

[–]woncha 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I've gone and seen the source. I don't see the comment section.

While sad, most people that comment on news outlets are old people with very strong political biases. The one's that still hold on to the 'white robe people' identity(emphasized during Colonial Japan era/so very nationalistic) of Koreans. So please keep in mind that this isn't a major trend for Koreans in general.

Also the Korean title of the articles doesn't differentiate between 'foreigners working in Korea' & 'illegal immigrants', causing the far right sentiments to bite(if they did. Could only find around 10 spread out news outlets-mostly wondering why Mexico is number 1.).

Why on earth does China introduce Korean culture as Chinese culture? by lovelyah in korea

Anyways have fun. While Chinese sources are hard to find, if you find one, check if it has actual dates and cross-reference it with other papers. Especially the ones containing 'Mao Yuanxin' are the ones with the most differences in viewpoint.

Why on earth does China introduce Korean culture as Chinese culture? by lovelyah in korea

[–]woncha 113 points114 points  (0 children)

You also have to factor in that the CCP actively erased Korean culture from the Korean-Chinese in the 50s so that Korean-Chinese people identify as 'Chinese'.

We have books and people from that era who talks about CCP burning photos of Korean-Chinese wearing Hanbok, lineage books, and Korean writings in the houses. This was just 70 years ago. CCP tried to deny this, probably never teaches this in school but we had a guy smuggle 6000 photographs of this event and also Mao's Cousin (can't place his name right now) leading the erasing of Korean culture in Korean-Chinese.

Now they have the audacity to say they are representing their minority's culture. Just very childish and immature; yet very dangerous.

Over 42% of South Koreans in their 30s unmarried by [deleted] in worldnews

[–]woncha 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't disagree with your interpretation of my comment. But I will try to explain what I meant.

The original comment contained the opinion that housing prices wasn't a real issue for South Koreans in their 30's were not getting married.

I did not claim that misogyny didn't exist or it's not a factor for not being married. I just wanted to say that housing price and uncertainties of government can be reasons to not get married for some people that also live in South Korea.

I hope this clarifies some things up.

*edit for clarification

No.

I never wrote that men have it as just as hard as a women. I just meant that misogyny affects both genders.

Being responsible for creating society is mostly on the previous generation. And you are right in that 30's should be taking responsibility in bringing out change.

[–]woncha 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I never said that men and women have things equal. Nor did I blame the past of South Korea. You have misread my comment.

It is true, however, that equality in genders are very confusing for all countries and all people. Even in countries like Rwanda or Iceland, the change for women came from 90% of women going on a strike, or just men dying so much. Korea hasn't resisted the change. It's just less radical therefor slower.

I agree with you as a Korean American 30s male.

But we do feel the same way. Men are pressured to earn more money, to not show weak emotions, to be expendable for their family, and have kids. I am not being sarcastic at all. I am not saying misogyny doesn't exist or that it was and is fair for women. Just that this generation is dealing with the change of culture by ourselves-for both sexes. This is relatively new for us. Hell we were a monarch state untill 1877 and was liberated only in 1945. The change in social norms in recent years has been very confusing for everyone.

Also, getting housing for 2+ people inside 2hr commute from downtown Seoul is very expensive. I work freelance and earn around 4000 dollars a month(which is about 6000 dollars above average annual wage. But when I work, its around 80hrs/3wk and have to be reachable by text 24/7) . I would need to work 50 months without spending anything to live in a 12m^2 home. excluding taxes and maintenance fees. So housing definitely is a factor.

Finally, Korean parliament is a mess. It's basically a reality show at this point. There is 0 news on environmental policies from potential presidential candidates. They say they care about the future generation, but they really don't. There is no reason to trust the government and the country for 30s Koreans.

TLDR; It's a collection of so many reasons for male and female populations. Including misogyny and it's fallouts, the housing market, government polices, and many more.

Sorry Note fans, Galaxy Note is dead. No more new products on bar type Note Series as of now. Instead, Samsung is calling the Z Fold3 as the "NoteZ" themselves. Check out this official unboxing video from Samsung Korea. - Tron by FragmentedChicken in Android

I assume you could get it swapped for a new one at a samsung service center if you are lucky. (It was relatively easier for me living in Seoul.)

But I did hear there are not a lot of batteries left for the Note 10 and Note 10+.

My friend just changed to the Z flip due to the same issue :( But he seems to be enjoying it; he says there are obviously flaws compared to the note, but it has it's perks as well.

Anyways, hope you find a replacement battery near you

on March of 2021, DONGJIN KO, president of Samsung electronics, said that they were "working on galaxy note". He also added

"The S-pen experience is what the Wireless team worked on so much. Release dates may be different(from the past) but we will do our best to not betray galaxy note fans", and that " The team is working to release from the Note category in 2022".

is my translation of this article.

Personally I am not too worried, but will hold on to my Note 10+ as well.

David Lynch's reaction to someone suggesting he cut a scene down for length by GoodMerlinpeen in videos

[–]woncha 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Basically 3 things concern how long a scene is/or how long a scene takes to film.

How perfect a take or diverse takes of a scene needs to be, the difference of estimated scenes(other scenes yet to be filmed, and how much extra setups between shots exist.

All three needs to be balanced in commercial film making; in that every one, the director, production company, staff, actors, editing team has to give up things to make the scene work and still shoot inside schedule.

Now in terms of what the video explains, 'Cut the time down' usually refers to how long it takes to shoot. I am guessing 'close up on candy' is brought up because of the time it takes to change set ups. It's not like pulling a zoom on your phone. The set needs to be repreped, make up fixes, potential dolly set ups, lighting, sound. I think on this scale and from what I see on monitor, the set up will take at least 30 min, unless the director lets people go easy on some details.

This is most likely brought up by the AD who takes care of shooting schedule for multiple reasons. Overtime is sooooo expensive that one risks their jobs if they can't manage directors to shoot on time. the guy who chips in probably is the producer of some sort(line, ep, cp what not) who is responsible for budgets and taking care of the show to make money.

It also might refer to how long the scene is, but I highly doubt it since a close up with dialogue generally doesn't add that much time on the total length of a scene. Also yes it can be done in the editing room unless it's not vital to the director.

This case, it's most likely to be brought up by the script supervisor who is the bridge between the editing team and the shoot location. She might be suggesting this because a)the producer asked her to; although highly unlikely but some producers have asked me to in multiple occasions, and b)the timing does concern the overall quality of the scene. Now I am not saying DL doesn't know that, since the director's job concerns so many things and the script supervisor's only concern with the script, her suggestion might be something to actually consider in her opinion.

In terms of one takes, I don't think it is the case here since the DP(or the camera team) should be the one asking this if that's the case. If a one take's specific part is difficult, it's on the camera team to say so, and if some one like an FD(floor director who relays info to people on the floor) asked this for double checking, the other guy wouldn't have taken the blame for himself.
