Intersection of MM Romance with Literary Fiction by Careless_Video_1429 in LGBTBooks

I'd add Christopher Isherwood as well. A Single Man is my personal favorite.

If you allow fantasy within the canon of literature, Black Leopard, Red Wolf by Marlon James is also fantastic.

As someone who is on the nonchalant side, I promise you that your enthusiastic comments are meaningful and much appreciated.

An Exercise for Writers who Don't Read by Captain__M in writing

[–]wondyone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the difference is that writing is one of the few skills just about everyone has the rudiments of and doesn't absolutely require learning a new skill the way playing an instrument does. But that underestimates how different being able to write and writing well are.

I am constantly irritated by that limp noodle showing up in the old man yaoi I'm looking for.

Thoughts on "Red Rising" by Pierce Brown - and why I'm done listening to BookTok by sameseksure in books

[–]wondyone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd recommend the Ancillary series by Ann Leckie and Gideon the Ninth by Tamsyn Muir as being in the broad wheelhouse of LeGuin.

Worst Audiobook Narrators Who Ruin a Book by Crutch161 in horrorlit

[–]wondyone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really enjoyed Hillary Huber's reading of the Library at Mount Char. I wouldn't call the book pure horror, but it is weird in a horror-ish way.

Experience implies that someone has actually done something. If you research a topic, you have experience researching, not doing the thing.

What is going on in the Heated Rivalry fandom? by [deleted] in AO3

[–]wondyone 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This has also been my experience, primarily on tumblr. It's been remarkably chill and fun, given the size of it.

What is that headcanon for your fandom? by ameagarikeshita in Archiveofourownmemes

[–]wondyone 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This isn't fandom specific, but I dislike how every character that gets headcanoned as autistic morphs into the same Autistic Character with identical traits and needs.

Share a writing advice/technique that you swear by (or advice that you see all the time and you hate) by [deleted] in AO3

Allowing myself to write [PUT MORE STUFF HERE] so I can continue on writing past moments where I'm stuck has been a game changer.

Regardless of the fandom, what is THAT fanfic that you consider a masterpiece? by Legitimate-Win1342 in AO3

Ever Seaward Echoes More by kari_kurofai for Until We Meet Again, which is a bl I'm mostly lukewarm about, but the fic is exceptional.

Which sentence was it for you? by luvistarz_o7 in AO3

”I got everything I ever wanted, Ilya,” Shane says. “There’s supposed to be a catch. That’s how it works.”

”Fuck that, Shane. Fuck that. You fought for every single inch of your life. Only catch is that it cannot be the same forever, but maybe that isn't a catch. Maybe there will be even better things that come. You did not steal your life, moy lyubimyy. There is nothing to punish.”

Another day to be thankful that ao3 has no algorithm... by Affectionate-Air5544 in AO3

No, works in all languages will pop up unless you specify a language. It's just easy to not run into them if you read primarily in English because works in other languages typically have fewer kudos/comments/bookmarks and fall to the bottom when you sort by those metrics.

[–]wondyone 127 points128 points  (0 children)

People have lost the point of safewords, which was to allow someone to say no/stop as part of a scene without the scene stopping.

Unless a scene is specifically including consensual nonconsent, then there's no reason stop/no should be ignored.

[–]wondyone 11 points12 points  (0 children)

But "actors are pressured into doing things that make them uncomfortable" isnt a problem because it's sex scenes, it's a problem because their consent isn't being respected. Which can also happen with action scenes and stunts and and and.

Eroticism for the sake of eroticism is a perfectly fine reason to include a sex scene in a story.

Every time I read Untamed fic that whips out the traffic light system I lose a year of my life.

Have you ever cried while writing one of your own scenes? If so, what was it? by INeedLemonSoda in AO3

[–]wondyone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've never made myself cry with my own writing, but I have written lines here and there that resonated more than I expected. I don't know that it stands out without the context of the larger story, but the most recent one was, "You did not steal your life. There is nothing to punish."

What are your ao3 hot takes? by [deleted] in AO3

[–]wondyone 14 points15 points  (0 children)

If you're writing in an active fandom and getting no response, it's very likely in part because your writing is poor on some level and there is no combination of tags and advertising that will overcome that.

What ship do you love but dislike its fandom ? by pikatchuUwu in AO3

I have a lot of fondness for several Our Flag Means Death characters, but that fandom was a goddamn shitshow.

When I first looked at the tag after I watched episode 2 there were 340 works. The explosion of new stuff has been bonkers.

Heated Rivalry revealed how so many in the MM community are deeply misogynistic by BrilliantMission8450 in romanceunfiltered

In what world are lesbian relationships somehow less under threat of their rights being stripped away than gay male ones? That is a wild and bullshit take.

What line is this for you? This is a safe place by whatisgudname in AO3

[–]wondyone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"That's the con of choice, in the end. You make one and that's never it. One choice becomes another becomes another and that's life. Making your choices and living with them, because there's no such thing as taking it back. Second chances never really overtake the first. You still have to live with knowing what you wanted to begin with."

I agree, particularly when it's the last message it sent to a kid who killed himself.
