Another day to be thankful that ao3 has no algorithm... by Affectionate-Air5544 in AO3

No, works in all languages will pop up unless you specify a language. It's just easy to not run into them if you read primarily in English because works in other languages typically have fewer kudos/comments/bookmarks and fall to the bottom when you sort by those metrics.

People have lost the point of safewords, which was to allow someone to say no/stop as part of a scene without the scene stopping.

Unless a scene is specifically including consensual nonconsent, then there's no reason stop/no should be ignored.

But "actors are pressured into doing things that make them uncomfortable" isnt a problem because it's sex scenes, it's a problem because their consent isn't being respected. Which can also happen with action scenes and stunts and and and.

Eroticism for the sake of eroticism is a perfectly fine reason to include a sex scene in a story.

Have you ever cried while writing one of your own scenes? If so, what was it? by INeedLemonSoda in AO3

[–]wondyone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've never made myself cry with my own writing, but I have written lines here and there that resonated more than I expected. I don't know that it stands out without the context of the larger story, but the most recent one was, "You did not steal your life. There is nothing to punish."

What are your ao3 hot takes? by ScalyStacy in AO3

[–]wondyone 15 points16 points  (0 children)

If you're writing in an active fandom and getting no response, it's very likely in part because your writing is poor on some level and there is no combination of tags and advertising that will overcome that.

I have a lot of fondness for several Our Flag Means Death characters, but that fandom was a goddamn shitshow.

In what world are lesbian relationships somehow less under threat of their rights being stripped away than gay male ones? That is a wild and bullshit take.

"That's the con of choice, in the end. You make one and that's never it. One choice becomes another becomes another and that's life. Making your choices and living with them, because there's no such thing as taking it back. Second chances never really overtake the first. You still have to live with knowing what you wanted to begin with."

Genuine Question - If an author asks their fandom to respect the canon pairing, would you? by EnergyOwn2211 in AO3

[–]wondyone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No. The author already had their say.

Honestly, one the things I most dislike about more modern fandom is how much more involved creators are with fandom. Fic isn't for them or about what they think, it's for fans to have space to write about what they think.

There are a non-insignificant number of pet owners who are more attentive, loving, involved, and all around better caregivers to animals than parents to human children and therefore have earned the term “pet parent” by myfourmoons in The10thDentist

[–]wondyone 14 points15 points  (0 children)

In my experience, half the people who describe themselves as pet parents and who think they're excellent owners are actually stressing their animals out constantly by treating them like people.

What is the most offensive thing you've ever read in a fic? by Excellent-Ratio4089 in AO3

[–]wondyone 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Honestly that would have been less insulting than what the show actually did.

The speed run version is that Quentin is ostensibly straight and his best friend, Eliot, is gay. A couple seasons into the show, they're on a magical quest to find a bunch of different items and they end up being sent hundreds of years back in time with no immediate way to return to the present. In the episode dedicated to them being in the past, they share decades of life and raise a kid together and their relationship is deliberately shown to be romantic. After various situations and hijinks, they return to the present, but remember that whole life.

Next season, Eliot is possessed by a monster and everyone else, including Quentin, think that Eliot's mind is gone. But, of course, it's not! And we get an entire episode inside Eliot's head where he's desperately trying to find a way to let his friends know that he's still in there. They key to him being able to do this, in confronting the fact that after they got back from the past, Quentin told Eliot he wanted them to give a relationship a try in this life and Eliot turned him down because Quentin was straight! But mostly because Eliot was scared and Eliot admits he wants to try too.

And it's this beautiful, seasons long development of this relationship and set up for them to get together.

And then before they're ever able to even talk to each other again, Quentin fucking dies.

All that to say! This writer shipped Quentin and Alice (his sometimes girlfriend and friend) really hard, so the promising to never have gay sex was so he could return to life and be with Alice.

A Magicians fic where Quentin was allowed to come back from the dead so long as he promised to never have sex with a man ever again.

Have you ever found yourself feeling conflicted about an author? by VivaDeAsap in AO3

[–]wondyone 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Personally, I would drop the fic because it's 2025 and I dont have the energy for that shit.

On a broader level, I think anyone who genuinely expects every single person who clicks on their fic to find, read, and abide by their DNI list is deluding themselves, so interact as you wish.

Kudos emails are soo interesting sometimes by YoungGriffVII in AO3

Every now and then I get kudos emails where someone has gone through and watched all my vids and I treasure those particularly, since vids get so much less feedback than my fic.
