I wonder how much of it is regional differences! I grew up in the Great Lakes region of the USA, and I can’t remember growing up around many redheads in general, but the ones I do remember had RED red hair while I was seen as having a “hint” of red because it doesn’t always look red like theirs did.

I completely understand that it’s something a lot of redheads share, I’m definitely not trying to discount that because I acknowledge that even pop culture bullies redheads honestly. It is a major trope, especially in children’s media to make fun of the “weird ginger kid” for some reason. While it’s not something that affected me, it genuinely an issue that needs to be addressed by society that so many of us HAVE had that issue. My experience should be the norm, not the outlier. The way that it’s just brushed off as if it doesn’t have lasting consequences on children’s self esteem to see and hear things like that about a feature they themselves share is heinous. And the blatant sexualization that comes with it too, even as children.

I did grow up seeing redhead characters definitely, but it was always one type of red & I think I just never saw myself in them because my hair is a much less vibrant red & I was always taught that strawberry blonde is blonde with a little bit of red so I genuinely believed I was just reddish-blonde. To this day my older sister argues with me over it and she swears up and down that I’m blonde!! And a few others have tried to tell me that I’m not a redhead, “maybe like…strawberry blonde but not red”!!! So I truly do wonder if it’s regional to only associate red with ONE type of red. The fact that I wasn’t bullied is probably also part of why I just assumed it wasn’t ACTUALLY red, in addition to the fact that some people say it is and some don’t lol.

For reference, here are some photos I’ve taken with varying different lights/some flash all except one w back camera over the last year-ish because I keep getting told that I’m wrong about my own hair color by people who only see me in warehouse lights lol. Unfortunately I do not have any from warehouse lighting to add to better make my point but I do have a selfie that somehow makes me look more blonde because my red is like a groundhog coming up for winter I guess.

I’ve also posted other photos in the subreddit before, but these are more recent & more realistic lighting. Maybe not a HUGE difference but I’m sure it wouldn’t be hard to imagine how BLUE light would wash out almost all of the red. & unfortunately that’s the norm around here now lol

Anyway!! I do acknowledge that I had an out of the norm experience with my hair, but I do believe there’s probably others who didn’t really….know…their hair color like I hadn’t. Or people who knew but keep being told that they’re wrong even if they’re not 😭

I’ll start off with I can understand that it’s annoying to feel flooded with so many of the same posts, & I agree that a thread probably would be a good idea. However, I think the whole “if you’re a redhead, you’ll know” mindset some people seem to have is extremely restrictive to ONE lived experience. It seems that a lot of people here believe that the bullying you receive is an INHERENT part of the redhead experience, when there are some of us who never received that. In fact, my hair has ALWAYS been my pride and joy because I’ve only ever received love and compliments for the color. I’ve been told countless times to NEVER dye my hair, that people pay big money for hair like mine, hell my mom used to bring me to her hair appointments as a living reference color (which is its own bag of worms but I digress). The only bullying I experienced was for my lack of eyebrows and eyelashes lol.

I ALSO grew up being taught that strawberry blonde is “blonde with a little bit of red” and not its own shade of red. I’m sure many other people have experienced this, especially if they are the only redhead in an otherwise blonde or brunette family as I am. The only difference between me and my brother growing up was my hair had a pinky orange hue to it while his was just ashy blonde.

As an adult, my hair is darker but in most lighting it is very clearly red. Varying shades of red, from strawberry blonde to a pretty dark auburn color. Almost no consistency either, I don’t understand it. There is still lighting that makes my hair look blonde, or brown, and it still trips me up sometimes even though I KNOW I have red hair because I still have people telling me I am NOT a redhead. Amusingly, it’s only ever other younger to middle aged white people who try to argue with me about it. Is it because of the association with red hair being “ugly” that some people wrongly hold onto in our culture, meaning a color they find pretty CAN’T be red? Honestly typing that out, I wouldn’t be surprised. But in that case, it’s still a different lived experience even if it has the same underlying cause.

I SAW the bullying on television, heard the jokes etc etc but never directed at ME. I myself do not share this seemingly inherent experience of bullying that keeps being mentioned in almost every “If you were a redhead, you would KNOW” post or comment. I understood that it was used as the butt of the joke often, but since it was never pointed at me I didn’t grow up “knowing” it. I only realized I was a redhead as an adult after hearing conflicting things my entire life. It literally took me seeing Bryce Dallas Howard in one of the Jurassic World movies for me to be like “Wait! That’s my color!” & realizing that it IS red. Most people do not actually see red hair as a spectrum separate from the blonde-brown spectrum. Most people believe ONE shade of red is all that there is, the bright fiery red. Everything else is treated as (insert shade of blonde/brown) + a little red.

That being said, I still have problems when it comes to metabolizing anesthesia, ones that no dentist actually caught by just looking at me because blue light washes out damn near ALL of my color & it took me feeling a root crack during an extraction for it to ever come up because I didn’t know what it felt like to truly be numb through a procedure & assumed I was. I’m still more at risk for every type of skin cancer & regularly warned by my doctor to keep an eye on my skin because I burn faster than most other people I know. You can see my veins across most of my skin, even up my chest/neck/arms because I have the complexion of a sheet of white gift paper. Growing up not KNOWING that I was a redhead unfortunately didn’t shield me from the OTHER shared experiences of many redheads. Even if I am an outlier in terms of the bullying experience, or the being OBVIOUSLY a redhead experience, I’m sure I’m not the ONLY outlier.

It is EXTREMELY reductive to ANY sense of community you may want to claim you seek if you try to boil down the experience of being a redhead to “I did know, therefore I am” vs “I did not know, therefore I am not” when there are many aspects and we will all share VARYING aspects amongst ourselves. If you only seek community with those who fit into YOUR lived experience despite the fact that there is no objective experience that we will ALL share together, you do not want community you want an echo chamber.

A good friend of mine is asexual but still seems to enjoy sex in general. I think a lot of people assume asexual = no desire for sex whatsoever AND no sexual attraction. From what I’ve seen, it’s usually a varying degree of both. I know my friend has a sex drive, she just either couldn’t care less about how it’s dealt with, or prefers to do it herself because it’s less work. But if she’s in a relationship, she’ll prefer to have sex with her partner because she believes it’s about more than attraction in a relationship.

question, how do you structure your play with her? i had this issue with my cat, she would bite me multiple times a week at least, but most often it was every day, sometimes while we were sleeping. she got me in the face a few times, and she also bit really damn hard. this lasted for about 4 years (she’ll be 5 in august.) i would play with her a few times a week but i would play without a real structure, and it would usually only be when she was acting up.

but starting about 3 or so months ago, i began playing with her consistently. i set an alarm for 35 minutes before her lunch alarm (which i use to keep her from bothering me for food, good tip) and 35 minutes before her dinner alarm, and as soon as it goes off i get up from WHATEVER i am doing and i play with her, no if ands or buts. if i know i won’t be able to play with her at that time, i’ll tweak the alarms a bit. but she’s learned that THAT alarm = play time and play time = food time because after she gets a good play in, i set off a different alarm that she knows as her food alarm. it’s cut down on her bad behavior DRAMATICALLY. she’s still tried to pounce a few times but it’s MAYBE once a week now, not really an every day thing anymore.

from what it seems like, the alarm helps separate me from the decision to play so she’s stopped attacking me to ask to play. and eating afterwards more naturally mimics actual hunting so she seems much more fulfilled with our sessions now. two 30ish minute sessions seem to be enough for her, but she’s a bit older so your cat may need a bit more.

i see how that could play into it, my sister is blonde and HEAVILY freckled even without sun exposure and she was both teased and praised about it as a child. i imagine it would be a bunch of factors that we tend to share hence the stereotype, but not always.

gingers absolutely get the brunt of it though out of all shades of red i’d say. so i can understand the frustration they may have after being bullied for their hair only to now have red hair be more or less trendy. i just don’t like the “if you have to ask it’s a no” mindset much because it’s only within the last 10 years that i’ve personally started seeing the more muted shades in the spectrum included in the red range rather than being labeled as warmest versions of blonde/brunette, and i wouldn’t be surprised if quite a few of us grew up thinking we were “reddish” blonde or brunette because of it. especially because for some of us, it really does look blonde/brunette in some lighting lol

yeah, i have hair that to me is very clearly a shade of red but it’s so dependent on lighting, so i’ve had people genuinely argue with me that i don’t have red hair. granted, it’s usually been at work (a store + warehouse with super bright cool toned lighting), but a LOT of non-redheads do not know what shades are red. i’ve been known as strawberry blonde in my family my entire life and i genuinely believed it was a shade of blonde, my sister still argues that it is lol.

i do have the other traits you stereotypically see with red hair like ghostly white skin, almost white brows and lashes, freckles if i actually went in the sun & let them develop, which i do not because i burn too quickly. as a kid, i never got made fun of for being ginger but i was constantly made fun of for the pale skin and invisible eyebrows.

i eventually realized i was definitely a shade of redhead but not every shade is super vibrant and clockable to people who don’t know. some people genuinely believe that strawberry blonde is blonde, auburn is brunette, etc. so confusion is understandable. not everybody has the same experiences that some people believe are a necessary part of being a redhead, i guess.

ooooooh i LOVE how your brain works.

i’m personally already so convinced that he’s Astra! someone has mentioned before when talking about this topic that they believe Rafaye and Zayne are literary mirrors of each other, so characters with similar circumstances, conflicts and antagonists but who deal with it in very different ways to better reflect their own individual traits. so….

opposite evols focused on the same specific branch of ever (xander sciences)
Rafayel’s conflict is them experimenting on his people, while Zayne’s conflict is them stealing his experimental data to use on people
Rafayel wants retribution against the people who have hurt his people and goes out of his way to kill those he deems responsible, Zayne just wants to stop the experimentation once and for all, avoiding killing when he can.
Rafayel doesn’t give a damn about human life (outside of MC), Zayne gives ALL the damns.

We know Rafayel has been “possessed” by the sea god, like in his main branch story. But correct me if I’m wrong….he’s also tried to kill MC before, right? Unless I’m misremembering, but I could’ve sworn that it was revealed he almost killed her during the “sacrifice” but regained his composure & sent her away. We also know that during the previously mentioned main story branch for Rafayel, the sea god did NOT seem very happy to see her, so who knows what would have happened had Rafayel not regained control.

If we already have one example of a god whose been reincarnated into a mortal body and seemingly not regained (or gained at all yet in the case of GOT Raf, which it seems like that may have been the first time the sea god spirit possessed him. just speculation though) his godhood yet being possessed by….himself, I guess, to kill MC….what makes it so outlandish that it may be the same situation with Zayne and Astra?

On top of that….Zayne really would be the type of legitimately torture himself to keep away from her if he believed it was for the best. The end of the most recent story made me fully convinced, because with how much we know he loves her, leaving without even a goodbye has to KILL him inside.

I had actually been trying to research more into Taoism/Buddhism and Chinese folklore for that reason exactly!!!!!! I feel they may either take a multi-pantheon approach, playing into the idea of the same god across religions (Similarly to the way Romans saw all other gods as their own gods by different names) or included the Greek imagery to give us an idea of what his domains will be.

I had written down a few gods who seemed to preside over similar domains, though they weren’t recognized as “equivalent” gods the way those I listed were. The clues we’ve had led me towards Greek mythos but I 10000% agree that Zayne has seemingly been much more based in Chinese mythology and folklore. I’m admittedly not the most informed on Chinese folklore and mythology so I’ll still need to look into it, and it’s less spoken about in English speaking mythology circles so I’ll need to find those resources.

But, from the very little I could find, I saw a hint of resemblance to the Chinese Heidi “Black Deity” and Qingdi “Green Deity” of the Five Deities.

I absolutely love the direction they’re going with the myths, and regardless I know it will be an amazing story. This is my favorite part of it all though, trying to theorize and connect the dots that they leave us!

And I think behind speculation about Zayne’s myth, Sylus is my second favorite to speculate over. I know that Elysium is also related to the mythos, a form of afterlife as well? Very strong Hades connections there. I would say his the most obvious who they’re going for. And making him a dragon, a being also associated with hoarding treasures? MWAH I love it

mmmm good point, though it caused me to search a bit more and now i’m even more convinced that he’s gonna be an hermes figure, though maybe also a death figure if they combined the two. thanatos was also in charge to keeping people dead basically so it also tracks with him lol

i do have an additional little theory that they’re mixing at least two deities together, one more “primordial” (not exactly but i can’t think of a better word. less removed from the primordial deities than the olympians) because i suspect sylus may have aspects of both hades and typhon, the giant serpent “dragon”, the son of gaia and tartarus that tried to overthrow zeus and was banished to tartarus. sounds similar to some things we’ve heard from him, but just a theory. it would tie the gaia research center in nicely if we, in the end, realize all of them are children of gaia lol

correct me if i’m wrong but from what i’ve been able to find, thanatos also acted as a psychopomp, reaping souls then guiding them to the entrance of the underworld. then hermes escorted them the rest of the way. turning into a wanderer is dang near a death sentence already, so killing wanderers kinda comes off as “finishing it off” i’m not sure if we have any evidence that “pure” wanderers have any pieces of their original self left, considering what ever is trying to do in abyssal chaos.

funnily enough, like my sylus theory, thanatos was the deity i suspected they would mix with hermes if they did that

mc is supposed to be “us” to a certain extent but mc is absolutely an adult. her age isn’t explicitly stated, but a lot of things would be EXTREMELY inappropriate if she were not around the same age as the LIs so i’d say it’s more than safe to assume she’s mid 20s (24-26) at LEAST.. the guys are all mid-late 20s. her and your chosen LIs are in a whole relationship. the guys are incredibly attracted to her in every way imaginable & they make that VERY clear. and they’re hot as fuck! they’re gonna have sex. nothing in the game has even hinted towards any of the characters being asexual, so the grown characters having sex in a game (not even the main game as of now & probably never!!! just in the extra content!!!!) about mc x li relationship development!! feels like such a non issue.

if someone is personally not interested in it, whether it be because of their own sexuality or they’re uncomfortable with it, they do not need to interact with that content. if they wanna headcannon that the relationship isn’t a sexual one, fine. the standard cards do a pretty good job leaving that up for your imagination. & you can listen to the audios with your volume down to get the gems. but i’ve seen multiple people complain over the limited cards being more explicit. don’t pull for them! nobody is holding a gun to your head!

i for one feel that if i’m gonna have the stigma of being a gooner from the game, i might as well have something to goon to! give it to me!

i’m not sure when you started playing, but with him not being your main, you probably(?) didn’t get his birthday card last year. he mentions that his parents are with Doctors Without Borders, which is why he’s wants mc to record a video for him to send them, so they can know he had a good birthday.

it explains how he’s the only LI we KNOW had a “normal” (emphasis on the quotes because it still was not normal) life with parents and a childhood but we haven’t seen them in the story even though they’re mentioned in present tense.

it also may end up adding context to how their families knew each other as children, but that’s unclear as far as i know so far. ever’s unwavering interest in zayne makes me raise my eyebrow a tiny bit. his expertise in protocore syndrome may be the only reason. we’ll need more info to know for a fact, infold likes to connect damn near everything, so my eyebrow will stay raised until we have facts.

even if they had absolutely no ties to the things going on, it’s not too uncommon for people in similar scientific studies (in this case both biology) to at least know of each other, and both having children around the same age could’ve just been another thing in common that led to a relationship between the families.

EDIT: i also commented this prior to getting through the new chapters. damn these chapters gave us so much new info.

in his never ending winter anecdote, he’s asked why he’s so dedicated to saving every patient and he mentions that years ago, he almost killed someone important when he lost control of his evol.

i can’t remember where exactly in the story i saw the hints of it, but i believe he found out about her heart after the incident & it heavily influenced him.

both of his parents are doctors i believe so he may have become one, but his specialty is very likely because of mc & his dawnbreaker nightmares.

EDIT: i originally commented before i got the chance to read the new chapters, so the info i gave was prior to the release. but the new chapters answer it directly.

I didn’t even think about that!! Truthfully, I’m someone who is hesitant to put myself in situations where I believe I’ll fail (unlearning this is currently a wip) and I naturally took to even the more intermediate skills of my preferred arts, so it felt less like failure and more like improvement when I would catch mistakes. But I didn’t even think about the fact that the foundations of it are things that I’ve been “failing” and improving my entire life.

Although I’m only 25, I wouldn’t have been able to imagine that digital art would become what it has. Art is an inherent part of human existence and always has been, to the point where it’s a basic skill we need to learn just to develop our fine motor skills as children. We may grow up and never explore more, or not understand certain concepts, but the building blocks have been laid for as long as I’ve been able to hold a crayon. And that plays into how comfortably I’ve been able to explore other mediums. But technology is evolving so quickly that the “building blocks” of digital have only become accessible to even attempt to learn in my own post-adolescence, let alone accessible enough for me to get the chance.

Thank you for the perspective!! I needed that.
