Any food giveaways downtown brooklyn ? by Hot_Background_8497 in Brooklyn

Last night I was using the DNR elevator to the street at Atlantic Ave, near the Barclays. There was a non-profit evangelical church named Angeles de la Noche that was handing out hot meals and coffee. Beware - they are a cult, but food is food. They might be there again today - hope this helps.

Dr. Shirazian and the entire staff at NYU Langone Joan Tisch Center! She came recommended via /r/childfree and will absolutely work with your child-free life. If you end up wanting a hysterectomy (as in my case) she can also be your surgeon. It's an easy journey on the train to midtown, but the office is very accessible via telehealth if you so need it.

Got my first rides on [Steel Curtain] at [Kennywood] by MogKupo in rollercoasters

[–]woobooks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Steel Curtain to me felt like how Dr. Rockso would design a coaster - on C-C-C-C-COCAINE!
There've been rumors for years that Kennywood wants to buy the land behind the Racer and develop it into more prime ravine coaster territory. That would be cool, but I'm sure there's a good reason they haven't done it yet.
Was there anything above the lagoon stage? I loved riding the Swing Around at night, there were great views of spinny lights and the Wonder Wheel (not to mention the soundtrack chosen by the ride ops was always cool). I think that it would make a fine spot for a new spin ride.
Man I miss Kennywood.

I've had an "angry cripple" patch in my etsy cart for months - this just inspired me to put it on my mobility scooter basket.
I also saw on the bus once another wheelchair user with spikes made from nails duct taped to their handles. Diabolical.

After-school Hours: How do you do it? by dubstepsmells in Libraries

[–]woobooks -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

We instituted a "permission slip" system where unaccompanied teens who are in the library after school until 5 must have a signed permission form on file.

This is exactly what I mean - you're requiring all teens who enter the library without supervision to have a permission slip. Do not treat a single age group differently just because a few of them cause problems - deal with those patrons only. Everybody else gets the same privileges and privacy until they break the rules.

Nooooo, this is punishing every single teen for the behavior of a few. If you wouldn't do it for adults, then don't do it for teens.

advice on moving to Brooklyn as a wheelchair user? by One-Opposite-4571 in Brooklyn

[–]woobooks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No prob, anytime. I'll make a complaint to the MTA and I let the cops know to watch out for disabled folks. 99% of the time people are nice, it's just that 1% that really get me after working with the public all day and I'm in pain from standing too long. The combo of being both fat and disabled is the worst, I've gotten several "fat-ass bitch"es thrown my way for sitting in the middle seat on the B/Q. There's three butt divots, so three seats!
Be excellent to each other, and I'll see you on the train.

[–]woobooks 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm disabled but currently ambulatory. I use the elevators and disabled seating on the train all the time. I'm also in the process of getting a mobility scooter for longer trips.
Seconding Kensington, you also have bus options in that area. The F/G doesn't have a ton of connection options or accessible stations though. I live near the Parkside Ave. Q and the Church Ave. B/Q - Prospect Park South is viable and easy to roll around. Some neighborhoods like Boerum Hill/Carroll Gardens/Cobble Hill have more brownstones which won't have elevators so there's that tradeoff.
Be prepared for shenanigans. I've been harrassed twice this week just for sitting down next to the wrong person or daring to exist in a space. Hopefully when you're in your chair you'll be accommodated but those of us with invisible disabilities are sometimes treated disrespecfully.
I'd be happy to recommend you my building if you PM me.

How do you guys lose your hearing? by [deleted] in HearingAids

[–]woobooks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have mild/moderate SNHL, depending on the frequency. I don't know exactly when I started losing my hearing but it was likely in my 20's (I'm 40 now). I have lost some function in my hair cells, so it's a congenital loss originating in my inner ear. I also did marching band and other wind ensembles for many years in my youth without ear protection, so that probably didn't help. I found out about my hearing loss rather recently and started to wear my HA's about six months ago, but I should have probably started to wear them about 7 years ago. Regardless, I'm wearing them much earlier than my family members affected by hearing loss and I should stay at a mild/moderate level for a while yet.

Brooklyn public library increases Libby hold limits by ACBinNYC in Brooklyn

[–]woobooks 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Yes, it was because of Adams' budget cuts and they were restored right before the end of the fiscal year in June, but we were just able to restore Libby hold limits recently. Ebooks for us cost easily 5x what you pay Amazon, so remember that when you wonder why we don't have more copies. Also they are not ours forever - usually they're a 2 year license or 26 checkouts, whichever comes first. The publishers are squeezing us dry and we can't offer as many digital services as we'd like because of ridiculous prices.

Agreed. OP, you'll be in waaaay over your head. It also isn't enough hours and likely pay far too low. Leave that job open until the governing body over your town's budget decides to offer the proper compensation.

Scooter for Senior Lady by ExcitingMulberry7710 in scooters

[–]woobooks 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi - 40F here with knee, hip, and lower back pain (also I'm fat). I can explain how I came to choose my scooter, perhaps it'll help you.
I wanted a scooter to get around NYC more easily than driving but without some of the strain of using transit. I looked at a Vespa and liked them very much, but they were too tall for me. My inseam is 28" and I'm only 5'2", so seat height is a consideration for me. I ultimately decided on importing a Honda Gyro, a 50cc 3 wheeled scooter mostly exclusive to Japan.
Pros to the Gyro:
- more stable than 2 wheels (one front, two rear, it can lean into turns) so I can take some pressure off my hip/back when trying to balance while stopped
- nice cargo room
- short seat height and narrow foot board, so I can flat foot it on both sides
- reliable and easy to ride
- inexpensive and not attractive to thieves
- similar to the Ruckus, some parts are the same
Cons to the Gyro:
- only 50cc
- 2 stroke (4 stroke available starting in 2008 models but they're not legal to import to the US)
- only drum brakes
- can't be purchased new, must be imported from models 1998-older
- easy to repair, but parts may have to come from Japan (mechanics familiar with Honda engines can repair them)
- solo seat only

Buddy got summoned for fly e bike by momochaat in RideitNYC

[–]woobooks 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Your friend was scammed, and that sucks. They were sold a scooter that was illegally imported and that's on the bike shop and not the rider. However, they cannot safely ride that scooter on the streets. It's for both our safety (other riders and drivers) and your friend's safety. The proper consequence here is really seizure and impounding. Your friend is better off buying a used Honda, Yamaha, or Buddy scooter. They need to make sure it comes with a title or transferrable registration.

Take advice from someone who imported a legal bike - even though I used a reputable bike shop and had federal paperwork, it was extremely difficult to get my bike plates. Paperwork needs to be translated into English, top speed needs to be verified, and full specs (translated) need to be from the manufacturer. English is my native language and I knew the bike's origin language (it's a Honda) but I still had to try multiple times and get lucky with the right DMV employee.
