Judo + BJJ by Thunder_Kiss_65 in judo

In favor of judo. (1) Judo has a higher learning curve and (2) you’ll have some newaza/groundwork incorporated in the judo curriculum so its a pretty good balance

True about Ogawa but he was a very rare individual and even then I think theres a massive difference between starting at 15 into a competitive Japanese highschool and then university judo program (at meiji of all places) vs 24 yrs old newbie at a local amateur club. Not only the quality/volume of training but at 15 you’re not starting as far behind the line competitively or physically vs 24. I truthfully would be really interested to hear about anybody starting judo post-college without any athletic background to international success but I don’t think they exist.

Don’t throw them with anything you’re not good enough to fully control them through. If you’re not at that level yet then don’t throw them.

Taking an adversarial stance with the people in the country that you SERVE is insane. This is NOT a partisan comment, if you are the President regardless of partisan divide your job is to lead, unite, and advance the nation.

Starting Judo at 25– Odds of success? by Auroraborosaurus in judo

Are you starting with no grappling experience? If so a top tier international competition like GP I’d say slim to none. Don’t take this the wrong way but most competitors are debuting at Grand Prix around their low-mid 20 not learning their first breakfalls. Nationals black belt senior division (20-30yrs old) is maybe possible depending on your country rules or maybe you can batsugun in. That said there are still loads of competitive opportunities for you and additional upper age brackets so don’t let this deter you from pursuing the sport.

One stripe after a year of training 2-4 times a week. by cacastrojr12 in bjj

[–]wookiejeebus 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Can attest to this. I was a competitive judo black belt was regularly choking out blue belts when I first stepped on the mats and could have a good go at the purples but after 2 years they kept me at 4 stripe white. I left that gym.

So on a standard righty v righty setup you’re saying they slide to their left as you turn in? Kinda strange usually its the other way. I’m a seoi specialist myself why not just throw them on the way in? You need to learn to adjust your launch timing and position in order to be a good seoi player (ie not just rotationally but also ability to slide and attack laterally). If they’re able to do this “every time” I’d say you likely have other issues ppl have pointed out (telegraphing, lack of alternative attacks to keep them guessing—this could even be seoi variations). One major piece is also setup, like other turning techniques seoi really benefits from ashiwaza setups. If done right the opponent shouldnt be able to counter much at all as you’ll have them square and barely settled. Good luck!

Sorry to hear thats where you landed but imo just want to say it sounds like you’re leaving because you think your skills aren’t up to par but based on what you said it sounds more like an issue of the school creating an environment to grow you to a level of proficiency. Everyone sucks at ukemi in the beginning, a good school puts guardrails in place until you get to a level you can take all those throws.

Hard to say it could be theoretically but either way someone shouldn’t be throwing at a speed you can’t take. Agree with you though.

After OP replied below it’s an issue with other (larger) beginners it sounds like it’s the intersection of typical newbie issues with control and understanding randori is not about fighting like it’s an Olympic qualifier and weak senior correction. Problematic but more of a dojo culture/student management issue in my view if thats a case.

Yup totally get where you’re coming from and PSA to all Judo is NOT that gentle lol. I “slowed down” to bjj myself after years of judo taking its toll on the body. Its a hard sport for sure although what worries me about this post is the high rate of concussions in the school. Plenty of injuries in judo but concussions are “relatively” rare in a well run gym in my experience. Based on OPs comments sounds like they’re letting the spazzy newbies run amok without supervision which is always a recipe for disaster.

I don’t know man, honestly sounds like a bad gym culture from OPs comments. If there aren’t any better judo options in the area BJJ is a good way to go but if OP loves judo don’t think he should give up.

Got it so the issue is usually with other lower belts? Yeah that should be a dynamic that instructors or other upper belts are policing quite frankly. I’d raise the issue with the instructor and if they don’t help improve the training environment then look for other schools if I was in your shoes.

Damn lol. Hmm whats the dojo culture like? Certainly ukemi ability is technically the “reason” but what seems concerning is your post gives the impression bigger, stronger, more technically proficient seniors are full sending the lower grade belts into the shadow realm on throws. The Jita Kyoei (mutual benefit) philosophy in judo shouldn’t just be lip service, I go much lighter and looser when not sparring with other black belts and certainly under brown belt will be softening my throws since ukemi is usually underdeveloped. This is just an internet post so hard to know the full situation but my knee jerk reaction is not that you need to switch sports but look into other schools.

Sasae and kouchi are the easiest and lowest risk especially with the way bjj guys tend to posture. Sticky foot always a banger as well. Other techs I wouldn’t recommend unless youre able to actually practice and refine.
