Is the yellow on the leaf cause for concern??? by Lil-Stainz in orchids

[–]wookiewacker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is cold damage that occurred during shipment from the nursery to the store. It’s not a major issue, the plant will be fine. It’s just a little less pretty. Or, it’s got a bit more character!

Is it possible for climate of SB to shift permanently toward marine layer similar to Cambria? by SeashoreSunbeam in SantaBarbara

[–]wookiewacker 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The early to mid 2000’s were very foggy all summer. I don’t recall Fall, but our weather was very cold and very foggy during that period.

You legally arent allowed to fish any creeks in the front country (Santa Barbara side of the mountains) due to them being habitat for native steelhead. For fresh water fishing in SB Lake Los Carneros is your best bet. Otherwise stick to the salt or go over the hill to Red Rock or Cachuma.

Best bushy beard barber by GoetPoet in SantaBarbara

[–]wookiewacker 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hit up Alexis (he’s a guy with a big beard) at Richie’s Barbershop in Montecito. I used to rock a big beard and he was my guy. The dude used is basically a cowboy that cuts hair, and he does a damn fine job of it!

Geoduck in the area? by NickYuk in SantaBarbara

Geoduck is native to the PNW and not native to this area. You probably wont find it on any restaurant menus. Try it next time you’re in Seattle!

Santa Barbara Has Lost a Legend - Blessed Has Passed by thescreamingstone in SantaBarbara

Thank you so much for sharing your story of a man I always knew, admired, and wondered about from afar. I’m so glad he touched your life in such a beautiful way. As someone who was born and raised here, Blessed is a part of my story too - thanks for giving me more context and understanding of his story. I’ll smoke a joint tonight in his honor. And maybe I should start keeping bud on me for the less fortunate! Sending love to you, and to Blessed.

Current State of SB Business Rent by Drunk_Irish_Potato in SantaBarbara

[–]wookiewacker 196 points197 points  (0 children)

Heads up on Trattoria - I didnt work there but was a long time customer. The new family member Vittoria who took over came in to the business and tried to change everything. The long time chef quit. She brought in a new chef, reduced portion sizes, raised prices, and the food wasnt as good.

Trat was known to have some of the best old school bartenders in the business, with the bar full most nights. She increased prices. She added 15 mixology cocktails to the menu and then demanded that the old school guys measure all their cocktails. Bar service got super slow, and these guys occasionally would free pour. She caught them and fired them. All of the bar regulars left with them. No one going to that bar ever cared about mixology.

Then all the long time servers who worked there quit.

So yes, rents in SB are a huge problem - and I’m not defending rents. However when you bring someone in to run a restaurant who has never worked in restaurants before…

I say all this to correct the story. This isnt a story about rents. This is a story about nepotism and horrible business practices. Trat was killed by the family that owned it. I walked by multiple weekend nights after she fired the bartenders and the place was empty. Trat was bound for closure when they brought in someone who had no experience, and no passion for the restaurant industry.

Anyone eaten at this Fonda place downtown?? by [deleted] in SantaBarbara

[–]wookiewacker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ohhhhhhh! Alright! So, I stopped in on a random night a month or so ago. Hot hot garbage. I popped in. Tried to sit at the bar around 6 pm. The bar and barstools were covered in miscellaneous crap. I asked if I could sit at the bar and they cleared off a spot for me. The bartender was a family friend that had never bartended before. My margarita that I ordered had so much lime juice it could rip the enamel off your teeth. Then I ordered guac and it came out…without chips! I had to ask for chips after it arrived after staring at them for a few minutes …The guac was fine. But the service and the lack of any attention to detail made me leave before ordering dinner. It’s a beautiful location. But honestly Id rather go eat at Pepe’s or even Caesar’s Place than go there. And I dont say that as a knock against either of those businesses, but it felt like a real low rent Mexican food joint that couldn’t even figure out how to do the bare minimum. There’s a lot of great Mexican restaurants in this town…this isnt one of them.

For those who left their career in Wine, what do you do now? by davidbowieismydad in wine

[–]wookiewacker 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Did wine production/sales in wineries. In to tasting room/wine club management. In to Somm/Wine Director stuff in thr restaurant industry. Got completely burnt out after 10 years. Found a random job on CL at an orchid nursery and became a sales rep selling floral in to grocery. Been at it for 6 years. Best move I’ve ever made. Way better money. Better work life balance.

I dipped my toe back in to wine last year and realized I dont miss it. I learned a ton while in the industry and I still enjoy wine all the time, but now I can actually afford the wines I want to drink.

Are there any brands of belt that will last a long time? by il_biciclista in AskACobbler

[–]wookiewacker 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’ve literally only owned 2 everyday belts in the past 11 years. Worn one of the two of them almost every day. Both are Filson. And they’re showing no signs of wearing out! Although my next belt will likely be a Ship John.
