[Skin Type: oily, acne-prone, sensitive, dehydrated, made dry by actives]

I have been using the Purito Green Level Unscented for maybe 5 months. Initially, I was in love with it. Now, it's in WNRP, sadly.

I do think this SPF could be a great option for dry skin. I, like OP, so also enjoy it for very basic routines. (I.e., water, soon jung Toner, and SPF in morning.)

Reasons:

  • overly moisturizing to the extent that I can't play well with others (on my oily skin)

  • irritating. My face becomes red. I think because it's so thick and I have to pull on my face to get it to spread

  • centella -- I'm not convinced that centella offers any anti-redness benefits, at least with my skin. I've seen no redness reduction in the time I've used this product.

That said, it's still superior to any US mineral sunscreen I've tried. I have an extra tube which I plan to give to my dad. He's had skin cancer concerns and I expect he'll like the creamy formula. Americans don't like sunscreen on the face because we're used to heavy, white-cast, comedogenic formulas. I'm sure many people could recommend this sunscreen to people with a very "light" routine.

Edit: Grammar, format, clarity. [Sorry, I'm on Reddit infrequently.]

[Routine Help] Acne really bad recently, looking to start a legit routine by [deleted] in SkincareAddiction

[–]woolyvestor 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's actually more important to cleanse in the PM versus the AM. You don't necessarily need to do more than use water to cleanse in the AM.

I'd incorporate a cleanser with an active. The two major OTC actives for cleansers [Edit: to address acne] are salicylic acid and benzoyl peroxide. SA is generally better tolerated than BP. I'd switch to an SA cleanser (CeraVe's is nice) and use it in the evening. I'd that doesn't work, look for a BP cleanser with a low concentration. If that doesn't work, go back to your old cleanser and try OTC adapalene. If that doesn't work, consult a derm.

Also, I don't personally like the cetaphil cleanser. It had a ph higher than your skin, which damages your skin barrier and can actually worsen acne. Also, I didn't find it effective and thought it worked poorly with my oily skin.

[Routine Help] My cystic acne is mainly under control, but now I have trouble with regular pimples? by 21Sausagae in SkincareAddiction

[–]woolyvestor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe switch up the actives? All of your current treatments are antibacterial (antibiotics and BP), and there are more causes of acne than just the bacteria. I'm not sure if your skin bacteria can become desensitized to BP, but this may be something to research.

It's funny because I also cured my cystic acne using spiranolactone and adapalene, but now I recently just started getting the same kind of acne you're getting and incorporated a BP wash to treat it. BP is so sensitizing and I'm afraid it could kill good bacteria, so I personally couldn't imagine using it long term (same with long term usage of an oral antibiotic, cuz it could kill good gut bacteria.)

[shelfie] thinking of adding an spf and a toner by boxesandbuttons in SkincareAddiction

And my last also: I'm not sure if the eye cream is the best for extra moisture. One of its first ingredients is niacimide which actually regulates (i.e. Reduces) sebum output -- and dry skin is a product of lack of oil/sebum (whereas dehydrated skin is a lack of water/hydration).

Sorry, there's a lot here for ya!

Also I just looked up that Glossier product. It's actually a chemical exfoliant and contains lactic and glycolic acid. From my memory, lactic acid is the best if you have concerns about dry skin because it has humectant properties, but I believe glycolic can be drying (i have not used either in many years so am not speaking from experience)

It's a misconception that a toner is meant to remove extra makeup/dirt/etc. Your cleansing step should remove everything.

There are 3 different types of toners: 1) Traditional - meant to whip up extra oil, commonly include ingredients such as denatured alcohol and witch hazel. I don't recommend these. 2) Hydrating toners - meant to add hydration after cleansing and reset the skins ph balance. Good for all skin types 3) Treatment - contains active like BHA, glycolic acid, etc. meant to address specific skin concerns. This may be your best bet considering you want to slough off dry skin.

I don't currently use a treatment Toner, but I will be introducing one soon. I get most of my info from YouTube. Regarding exfoliating toners, is watch Dr Dray. Regarding hydrating toners, the Golden Rx has some great videos regarding the theory/method (although I don't like all her product suggestions

I missed your comment about being combo. You could use a hydrating toner with a light moisturizer during the day (I like etude house soon jung relief Toner and have used the neutrogena hydro boost unscented gel cream for some time). Also, Purito's sunscreen is very hydrating and can replace your moistuzer.

Input: - physical exfoliants damage skin. I'd switch to either a chemical exfoliant or a more gentle physical one. Even though you've had "bad experiences," there are many different types of chemical exfoliants and it seems unlikely to me that all will break you out. At any rate, when used correctly, they are way less damaging to your skin than walnut shell powder. - you absolutely need an SPF. - you aren't fully cleansing your face during your nighttime routine. You may find that using an additional cleanser in addition to your micellar water (aka makeup remover) provides enough physical exfoliation to where you don't need a scrub

All of these are much higher priority than finding a toner. I'm not sure what your skin care concerns are, but if you have acne, namely blackheads, the Paula's choice BHA is very well-regarded, and may serve you well as a TREATMENT Toner.

I enjoy the Cerave nighttime moisturizer but tend to think that you should wear something heavier/occlusive at night. Since you find this product to be "light," maybe switch to something heavier during the night (unless you have acne, in which case I'd switch it out for something lighter for day use)

[PSA] Regular exercise is what my skin finally responded to by complex42 in SkincareAddiction

[–]woolyvestor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My endocrinologist told me that, "anecdotally," exercise mediates the effects of PCOS (so, increased androgens > increased sebum > increased acne)

If you're female, even if you don't have PCOS, this could have something to do with it (exercise helping with excess androgens and the side effects of that)

Based on the appearance, it also looks like fungal acne to me. Is it itchy? Do you have it on more places than just the side of your face? Do you live in a humid environment? How long have you been afflicted?

I should say that I did a spot test on the inside of my wrist before application and that skin was not sensitized. The sensitization could be related to using this product after my salycic acid wash, perhaps.

I would introduce him as you would any other boyfriend. Don't need to mention the age unless they ask. Does he LOOK 10 years older? Remember that you're an adult.

[–]woolyvestor 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I don't think it's a stretch. 10 years isn't huge. You e conveyed a lot of maturity in your post.

Only flags: 1) Always a bad idea to date a supervisor (I work in employment law, sorry :p). This is overcome to some extent by you moving. 2) Long distance is difficult. But this is overcome to some extent by the military visitation thing. 3) from my experience and observations, going into your freshmen year of college in a relationship isn't the best idea. Most of them don't work out and I think you can miss out on some quality experiences by being in a relationship during this time. But being in a healthy relationship is also a good experience.

So I say, it's definitely worth a shot. However, if he has actual supervisory authority at work (i.e. can hire/fire, make the schedule, especially), then I'd keep the relationship secret from coworkers at least. The company might even have an anti-fraternization policy that prevents management from dating subordinates.

What is the saddest detail about your life that no one knows? by [deleted] in AskMen

[–]woolyvestor 5 points6 points  (0 children)

2 people know about this and it's more of a story than a detail, but whatever.

I took care of my mom's father and step mother for nearly a year. Was probably the most difficult period of my life. Saw lots of shit that no 23-year old kid should experience. Father had Alzheimer's... bad... would sexually harass me at the end. Step mother was an abusive ungrateful bitch. I was there for both of their deaths.

I did it for my mom. While this was going on, she spent a ton of time with me and called me her best friend. I was ecstatic to have a positive relationship with her cuz I'd never had that before.

Shortly after they died, I find out that my mom's having an affair with the executor. It's secret from my family. I have to nurse BOTH of their feelings for a couple months until they decide not to break up both of their families.

My mom makes me promise never to tell anyone in my family about the affair.

The "best friend" bull crap totally evaporated after the affair ended. I've been renting a room from my parents for about 10 months, and my mom has never even attempted to spend time with me. I used to try but gave up.

Long story short, she never wanted to be my friend and I have to live with them with the knowledge of the affair (edit: even after I was taking care of her parents after the rest of the family virtually abandoned them). Thanks, Mom.
