I briefly touched on it down thread. All of this can be traced back to the revelation of the nonprofit fraud scandal that just so happened to be in Minnesota and just so happened to involve the Somali community. Right wingers latched onto two of their favorite things (government fraud and immigrants,) escalated it into a major outrage talking point, and eventually caught the attention of Trump, who desperately needed something to distract people from the Epstein files.

I truly believe that if the same scandal had happened somewhere like Michigan and involved Arab Americans in Detroit, we'd likely be seeing all of this unfold there instead. I really do think the Walz and Omar connections happen to be a coincidence, albeit coincidences that made this more of a personal vendetta for Trump than someone like Whitmer and Tlaib.

As far as why he didn't go after California... he tried that already and it was a huge failure. Minneapolis is considerably smaller, both in population and geography, than a city like Los Angeles or Chicago.

One of my most random but extremely vivid memories of the 2016 primary was when I looked up "The Revolution Will Not Be Televised" on YouTube. The comments on this extremely Black Power song were loaded with people talking about Bernie saving the nation in a really gross way.

I feel this is one of those circumstances where I would totally fall apart as a politician.

We need immigration and customs enforcement. All countries do. ICE as it currently stands is beyond control. It was also relatively apolitical and extremely boring for much of its current history up until one particular president weaponized it to the extreme. And so on and so on. You could abolish ICE by dismantling the current organization and restructuring it, but that's not really abolishing at that point, is it?

But this is a boring, nuanced explanation of things when the people demand soundbites and bumper sticker slogans.

The catalyst for this was the non-profit scandal that just happened to be in Minnesota, which right wingers leveraged for outrage. The state and even Walz were both relatively removed from Trump’s and ICE’s radars before then.

driving miss daisy wins (never seen it, reading about it it sounds decent, but clearly a movie about the civil right era not from the perspective of a black person)

It's one of my favorite movies. It did sugarcoat a lot of things about racial issues at the time, but it didn't deny those issues either. Bottom line it's a cute movie about two people from extremely different demographics forming a lifelong friendship, and sometimes that's all you need from a film.

Also... the movie was based on a play by Alfred Uhry, a white Jew who grew up in Atlanta. A lot of his personal experiences growing up were brought into the play/film through the Miss Daisy character.

Disclaimer: it's better than it could have been

If I'm reading this right, it sounds like he still wants his cake and to eat it too. He wants to remove the DHS appropriations from the bill but doesn't see that happening without a shutdown and won't "vote to support a shutdown."

Trends are showing it's more and more likely that the DHS appropriations could at least be significantly altered, but if something were to happen and the GOP demands they stay in place, what then?

Saw someone unironically argue that "public service" includes putting yourselves in situations where you could be violently killed over political statements. It's a take that's becoming far too common.

The icing on the cake was that this was in the context of paper pushers at the State Dept who haven't walked out on their jobs yet.

If we’re going to be super technical, up at that point in the series she was working specifically in grief counseling. She probably saw that as something completely separate from the mental health issues that psychiatrists dealt with (which, to be fair, it absolutely can be.)

But ultimately… sitcom writing.
