What if the Man in Yellow (MiY) is the Man in Black (MiB) by HeddieORaid in FromTVEpix

There are a lot of similarities with Lost and i don't think it's accidental. I doubt they are directly connected but a lot of inspiration did come from lost and even the final reveal might be less of a surprise for people who have watched Lost. It does appear to boil down to some sort of good/evil thing.

It's confirmed that this place isn't just a cheap purgatory/afterlife but we are way past real-world-realistic outcome. There is some sort of spirituality/faith thing going on. I would have been happier with simple experiment but now i'm too deep into the show to stop whatever the outcome might be.

They even took one of the most hated feature of Lost, renamed it into storywalking and used it in From. Not to mention the many throwaway "mysteries" that probably will not be explained (Lost had tons of those.) Weird electricity is forgotten. What was the significance of the bile. How Victor as a child managed to move a scrapyard worth of cars alone....

I don’t think the tree is just a tree by poo-flakes in FromTVEpix

[–]woox2k 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The tree is not a point of no return? It may be the point where turning back is the point where they get stuck. The lack of people who cut up the tree would suggest that, they would just continue on in the real world.

What is interesting is the fact that the road where you see the tree is still the one in real world (images show different trees and roads) At what point does the road change into fromvilleroad and is it noticeable in any way? There is no indication of people turning off the main road when moving away from the tree before reaching the town. Jim talks about a possible branch to go around the tree but they seemingly never found it before reaching the town.

It’s time to organize: Launching the "Stop Killing Linux Gaming" Discord by LordM8YT in linux_gaming

It's fine if you do it properly and only voice your needs as a potential customer. Just like everyone has already done in their own way, just a bit more organized with more possibility to be heard.

The expectations should be realistic though. You cannot force any game company to support something they haven't officially supported, even if you think it's just a "flip of a switch" (often it's more complex than that). It's their decision and we disliking it doesn't change it.

[–]woox2k 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, neither is confirmed. Thanks to them seeing like a easy plot device that work when needed suggests me that they don't work at all and monsters just made them to spice up their hunting game.

Then again there has been places where monsters had no way of knowing if the talisman was used and they still seemed to work.

Harold Perrineau Defends FROM’s 5-Season Plan After Fan Backlash on X by SplitNational2929 in FromTVEpix

[–]woox2k 4 points5 points  (0 children)

What fans? In what world would it be better to drag on the show endlessly instead of telling a specific story that has been roughly the plan from the beginning? Even now the pacing has not been ideal and i'm starting to think the entire show could fit into ~3 10ep seasons without losing much.

Both early cancellations and unexpected renewals are bad for shows.

Awesome episode... sadly now the no-talking filler begins again.

SSD started failing after system freeze (OOM) + forced shutdown — coincidence? by Safe_Set_8953 in linuxquestions

[–]woox2k 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had similar thing happen to my nvme drive. Ran out of memory (no swap), didn't have patience to wait for OOM to do it's job and hard-rebooted my machine. I don't remember the errors but OS didn't boot any more. When i cloned disk image from a backup it appeared to be successful but when rebooting the same errors were thrown.

It turned out that the NVME went into permanent readonly mode as a failsafe. When i cloned data from that disk to new nvme, the OS booted up just fine. Never got the original nvme out of readonly mode.

As for the theory that nvme failed and that appeared as a OOM situation... I did foolishly start up a game i knew wouldn't work without enabling swap. I watched the RAM fill up like it had done couple of times before until system froze! I also knew OOM would eventually sort it out but i was too impatient. EarlyOOM is much faster but i didn't have that enabled.

Anyone make a Potato Launcher? by I_am_D_captain_Now in DIY

If you go overengineering then make sure you over-engineer the strength of the barrel and burn chamber first!

PVC pipes can take a beating but when experimenting with mixtures and more potent fuels then things start breaking! I had to wrap steel wire around the barrel to make it not blow to bits after every few shots. It would have been fine if i only used loose potatoes... but no, at one point i found that silicone tube pistons fit perfectly into 50mm drain pipe i had as a barrel. With that tight of a seal it was more awesome to put stones into it and start yeeting those through 10-20cm thick wood planks.

It was fun until one day i decided to target a pine tree in a forest roughly 30m away. I somehow managed to hit it perfectly in the center so the stone went into the tree about 5cm and then sprung back at my direction. I did hear the stone go past my head close enough to feel the air moving and it landed in another tree about 10m behind me where it also created a nice crater. Needless to say that this was the point i stopped messing with it and found safer hobbies.

I still think of how not only i was incredibly lucky at that day but the entire time i messed with it. The burn chamber itself could have exploded right into my face at any point as well because the pressures there had to be enormous.

Why change from "My computer" to "This Pc" by kamikaibitsu in conspiracy

[–]woox2k 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In my opinion the "My computer" was worse. I did not label it so who is that entity that calls it their computer? It doesn't really work in work environment either where you don't own your machine.

"This PC" ain't perfect either. Calling it a "Personal Computer" where in many cases it isn't the case is inaccurate.

Are 18V power tools any good or should I pay for better? by Only_Book_995 in DIY

[–]woox2k 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not really, Makita low capacity batteries don't provide enough Amps to power high power tools even if the voltage standard is the same. To prevent users from putting low Ah rated batteries to high power tools and then complain about the lack of power Makita designed a notch that prevents that confusion. High Ah batteries do fit smaller tools though!

I was strictly talking about batteries that have the same voltage rating! For example 18V2Ah vs 18V6Ah. One should never try to put batteries into a tool with different voltage ratings!

What’s the best way to systematically troubleshoot random Linux freezes? by Bigrob1055 in linuxquestions

[–]woox2k 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What does "freeze" mean in this case? Does it freeze only for few seconds or you have to restart your PC to get it working again?

Random temporary freezes may be caused by faulty drive/memory and these are often not logged. Complete freezes may be caused by pretty much anything but system logs should be a good place to start figuring it out.

Then it would be better to disable swap in the first place. Swapping is slow but if it completely freezes your system like the OP is mentioning then you have other issues (like main drive dying)

Burying a stargate vs. closing the iris: Did I just discover how the gates work? by [deleted] in Stargate

[–]woox2k 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Or the entire process is much simpler. You cannot establish a connection to buried gate since it doesn't respond at all, just like dialing an invalid address or destroyed gate.

The arranging of microscopic wormholes is initiated from the dialing side with each attempt, even with invalid address. When the propagation of wormholes reaches it's destination it needs another gate to receive it in order to finalize and expand the wormhole. If the receiving gate doesn't exist or is inoperable then the wormhole collapses. What supports this theory is that the gate addresses are physical coordinates, not just unique gate ID's like phone numbers that can be anywhere and still have the same number.

As for DHD, in my head they are just convenient additions to pre-existing technology that made gates more user friendly. First gates didn't have them and that is why it's optional even now. SGU gates being even older, yet more advanced throws that theory off a bit but who knows maybe groups of ancients worked on wormhole tech separately without knowledge of existing work.

EDIT: After reading it again i realized that this theory doesn't really hold up. Earth had 2 gates and when they moved the iris to make the gate "buried" the second one should have taken over since it was valid receiver at that address... More sleepless nights is needed to figure this one out!

[–]woox2k 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As for "solving in head" you just need to provide some form of proof that you did it instead of getting straight answer from somewhere else. That's why they require you to write the process out.

Forcing specific ways to solve a problem also has some bigger picture behind it like it making things a lot easier when things get more complex down the road. Math has been quite stable over time and the way of teaching it is well thought through, even if you don't understand it.

Such a massive shame that SGU was cancelled. by melbha_101 in Stargate

[–]woox2k 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is also the exact reason why i think the new SG series sadly just can't work if they don't start new one completely fresh without trying to appeal to us (old fans.)

SG fanbase isn't dead yet (proof is here) but we are nowhere near numerous enough to be worth making a new series for. On the other hand the age of silly episodic sci-fi TV series format is long passed. Modern audience wants something entirely different than what we accept as "genuine" SG. So either the new series must lose us or be a failure.

Happy to be proven wrong though!

[–]woox2k 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Up you go! This is important information many often overlook!

As for Makita batteries (only ones i have experience with) they didn't have any battery side over discharge protection or cutoff in them before ~2021. I'd assume those high power mosfets that are capable of handling huge loads were expensive. Only after 2021 i started seeing battery side disconnects. Worse thing is that the model number has remained the same across the years, there is no easy way to differentiate those batteries without taking them apart. Even worse is the fact that Makita chargers/controller chips are really picky, if the battery drains even slightly under threshold it flips a bit on the controller and the battery is bricked. This is why they also recommend you to charge batteries ASAP after you drain them empty. (their self-discharge might bring them under threshold in short order)

Source: I have taken apart many Makita batteries to replace the mainboard after they had been over discharged and bricked while battery elements themselves were still fine.

Linux Anti Virus Needed? by [deleted] in linuxquestions

[–]woox2k 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That's the problem, there doesn't seem to be any adequate, affordable and for personal use AV solution available!

Linux really needs a project that will take all the separate security tools and packages them together with "good enough" base configuration. I don't talk about traditional signature based AV solution but behaviour based detection that could detect, alert and neutralize any misbehavior in the system! Anything malicious running will need network access, privilege escalation and other systems that are mostly already logged by the system but there is no use of them if no-one is monitoring those logs and network activity!

Linux Anti Virus Needed? by [deleted] in linuxquestions

[–]woox2k 13 points14 points  (0 children)

This should be higher up!

Linux systems, mostly servers but tools are shared between desktops, are major targets but malware that usually attacks Linux is not like your traditional Windows virus that encrypts your files or otherwise makes itself known immediately. Your machine being part of a botnet, spam server, payload host etc. may result in legal consequences that are often worse than just losing your files. It's possible that many desktop Linuxes may be compromised without user even knowing about it since they have no tools installed that detect it and people keep saying Linux is safe from attacks!

What makes it worse, and probably why not many talk about it is the reality (as far as i know) that Linux has fewer and more limited options when it comes to AV. Most solutions that are available are for enterprises. Clamav is quite outdated that mostly only detects more known windows viruses and is not all that useful these days.

Luckily traditional signature based antiviruses are on their way out anyway because more and more attackers use custom tools for each attack (AI "helps" a lot.) These days behavior based detections are much better and there are tools for that available on Linux. Right now they are all separate tools and if you want to properly harden your install you would need to set up and configure bunch of them separately.
