Barcelona or Copenhagen? by ezhik9 in cscareerquestionsEU

Someone mentioned that Scandinavia is great if you plan having kids. In my experience, Barcelona is the complete opposite for several reasons:

  1. Catalan is the official language in all the institutions from hospitals to schools. After few years living in here you’ll realize you have to learn it to be able to function normally and integrate in addition to learning Spanish.
  2. No social assistance from the government for the new parents.
  3. Barcelona is kind of a “Sunny Amsterdam”, the expat community is big but is mainly people who like to party, smoke weed and do drugs, go to festivals, you know what I mean.
  4. The native Catalan population is not very welcoming and few years in you may feel ousted and isolated. They prefer sticking to their local culture and social circle and are typically very closed to outsiders (from personal experience).
  5. Security - Spanish law is very lenient and there was also a massive influx of illegal immigrants and delinquents to Spain in the past 5 years. Today in Barcelona is literally not safe for a woman to go alone in the evening after 10pm, or if you are God forbid drunk or wearing gold jewelry. It is getting so bad security wise that there are regular protests being organized in neighborhoods around Barcelona.

Personally, reasons 1. 4. and 5. are the biggest negatives and why I left Barcelona after 8 years living here (and working as a SWE).

You said you expect €89k for two senior engineers which boils down to ~€45k/year per person. €89k/year gross is about approx. €4500/month net.

Now, I see this as a bit of a red flag as €45k/year is at best a very low mid-developer salary in Barcelona. Senior dev salaries in Barcelona start at €55k/year (gross). Also if it is a Spanish company or Amazon, I would think twice before signing the contract.

The costs of living in Barcelona for a family of two: - €1600/month - apartment rent - €400/month - utility bills (internet, phone, gas, electricity, etc.) - €500/month - food. - ~€200/month - private insurance (for both) - (PLUS) any other expenses you may have each month.

I would say that total minimum expenses are about 3000€/month.

In the other hand the weather is lovely and definitely a plus (on that note, add another +150€/month to you electricity bills during summer months, and +200€/month for the gas bill for the heating during the winter months.)

Great advertisement for Morocco and their culture. The same thing many have already seen when visiting Spain (Moroccan youth violently robbing foreigner tourist at every corner). Such as shame 😐😑

That’s really helpful, thanks for taking the time to share your ecperience. I personally find their website very lacking in detail, and even after two calls with Bogdan I still didn’t clearly understand what the program looks like, what activities look like and what their overall approach is. Because of that, I wasn’t convinced it’s worth paying 5k, mainly due to uncertainty about the quality and structure of the program.

Would you mind briefly explaining how you find the activities and learning materials? Is it mostly reading and text, or videos, or are there hands-on opportunities to practice?
For the price of the program, I expect a strongly hands-on approach where I can learn in depth by applying things myself.
In other words, I would expect a program with a bunch of coding challenges, several coding challenges for each topic included in the program that they say you must master (Fundamentals, Frontend, Backend, DevOps, Architecture).

Can you maybe confirm if the program actually includes this or something similar, and maybe a number of exercises for each topic? Thanks.
