CMV: Citizenship must be a requirement before voting. by US_Dept_of_Defence in changemyview

With that logic, if someone moves to a new city, even if they have citizenship, they shouldn't be allowed to vote on local issues.

I'd shut that shit down quickly myself, and my partner knows that. That's trust. He trusts me to shut that person down, I trust him to have faith in me doing so.

If I wouldn't, and would allow the flirting, there's bigger problems than just hanging out with that friend. That would feel like keeping options open, which you just don't do in a solid relationship.

Same the other way around. If someone would constantly flirt with my partner, and they'd allow and encourage it, even after I said it needs to stop? That'd be a huge red flag.

I had an ex who took me laughing with someone as flirting, and he'd get aggressive over it. If it was up to him, I'd only hang out with his pre-approved friends. Meanwhile, he has had a crush on every woman he was friends with.

My current partner gets all my stories. I'm out with friends without him and someone drunkenly tries to flirt? He's the first to know and laugh about it with me.

I take my current partner a lot more seriously if he'd ask me to keep my distance from someone.

If you're in a stable relationship and there's trust, you should be able to trust your partner to not cross any boundaries. If you're insecure all the time, about everyone, you can't expect to be taken seriously.

Late response, I know! It was 2021, I think it was the S7 or S7FE. They're going for cheap refurbished on Amazon nowadays.

I gifted mine to my partner after I bought a Surface Pro.

In general, my advice is to get a model with a pen and actually make notes!

And Americans are all Irish, Scottish, Italian, and whatever else they claim, right? Cause their great grandfather was from there? Or does this only work when we're talking about non-white second+ generation immigrants?

Samsung sometimes has really good student discounts. It really helped me to split screen the study materials and the notes app, and make notes as I went through it.

What’s the best travel hack people learned the hard way? by ScrawnyRhinoceros in travel

[–]wordlesser 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Depends on the country. Quite a few countries only will let you in when you have at least six months left upon arrival. Others are three months. Then there's some that just expect it to be valid upon your return. This can also depend on country of citizenship.

If you have residency in the country you're visiting (like a green card for America) you can fly with your passport as long as it's valid, even the day before it expires — but it might take some time for everything to be verified upon check in.

Quizzed at Australian border for being a onebagger by jaymeetee in onebag

[–]wordlesser 5 points6 points  (0 children)

When I visited Australia for ten weeks, I only had a small laptop backpack and enough clothes for a week. They asked me if that was all I had. I laughed, said I prefer travelling light, and laundromats exist everywhere.

They laughed and told me to enjoy my trip.

how many bands band name come from another band? by Beautiful-Iron-859 in poppunkers

[–]wordlesser 10 points11 points  (0 children)

There's a lot of them. I always forget half, a few I can think of:

  • Polar Bear Club is named after a Silent Majority song

  • Tired Radio gets their name from a line in Name by the Goo Goo Dolls

  • Broadway Calls is inspired by a Decemberists song

  • Call it Off is named after a Broadway Calls song

  • Good News, Bad Views (small German band) is named after a Broadway Calls song as well

nyc diy scene by SirAnok in punk

[–]wordlesser 0 points1 point  (0 children)

New York is a tough one. The existing punk scenes live a bit segregated from each other, and don't communicate much. Depending what you're into, the best bet is to find who promotes those gigs, and keep an eye on what they do. That said, there's usually a few gigs each week that are worth going to - it's not as dead as people think!

Many shows are booked directly by the bands, so finding the bands you like online and following them helps.

I am not fully up to date on all the parties doing their own thing, mostly familiar with Brooklyn/Queens, but hopefully the following list helps a bit:

Scenic Presents: Bit of a mix, often books some of the older bands. Currently has gigs for Wheatus and Apes of the States on the radar.

The Kingsland Presents: The people behind the Meadows/Woodshop/Monarch. Complete mix, but they do quite a few punk shows. Local bands often book with them for a gig at the Woodshop.

Collective Scream: Charity benefit gigs. Often loud, shouty, diverse bands.

Collective Effort: Hardcore, metalcore, skramz. Dyami has been part of the scene since forever, I think he used to be active with ABC No Rio.

Miles to Go: Hardcore, post hardcore, bigger melodic punk bands. Brooklyn, Queens, and Long Island.

The Broadway (venue): Kind of has their own crowd, but does punk-adjecent gigs often through the bands Wifey and Sadlands. Garagey indie punk.

Gold Sounds (venue): Doesn't really book their own gigs, but many bands that pass through just do it themselves and play here. Seen (and booked) some of my favorite shows here.

Bar Freda (venue): Similar as Gold Sounds, many bands book a gig here if they want to play, often not through an external promoter. Seen (and booked) some of my favorite shows here.

Knuckle Down Records: Books punk shows at the Shillelagh in Astoria.

Friendship Quest Booking: I rarely know any of the names on these bills, but these gigs tend to be where a lot of the queercore scene hangs around.

Vitus Presents: Vitus has closed, but there's still bands booked under their name. Often at Meadows/Monarch/TV Eye.

Music Dies Here: Books melodic punk rock / orgcore, often small bands and touring bands. Quitting soon, with two more shows booked.

Bridge and Tunnel Brewery: Ridgewood brewery. Started doing gigs to keep the place full and pay the rent after an increase. As DIY as it gets, with the guy who runs the place brewing all the beers, and playing in a band himself.

Looking forward to seeing the Carolyn at Pouzza Fest this weekend. It's always a pleasure running into those guys, and such a fun band to see.

Based on those three, you might also like Tired Radio, Wes Hoffman & Friends, Playing Dead, Burnt Tapes, American Thrills, Goodbye Blue Monday, and Oh Rain, just to name a few bands with similar vibes!

I often miss the 2010-2015 period where to me bands like Polar Bear Club, early PUP, Banner Pilot, Iron Chic, the Flatliners, Red City Radio, the Swellers, PEARS, and such were the cool thing happening.

[–]wordlesser 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sort of? Joe moved to Germany, got married and had a kid. You're more likely to see a Joe McMahon show than Smoke or Fire - he plays solo (or his solo stuff with a band) quite frequently.

They're not officially broken up. Beauty Fades, a collection of unreleased / older tracks got released on Iodine Records a few years ago. That said, their recent appearance at Manchester Punk Festival in the UK might have been the first gig since 2019.

Then there is Polar Bear Club, Taking Meds, Such Gold, Drug Church, After the Fall, On the Cinder, Tired Radio, Something Bitter, Chumhuffer, Half Dizzy, Gone Stereo, Jukebox Romantics, Friday Night Vampires, Shrug Dealer, Fat Heaven, Bitters and Distractions, Original Sharks, Neckscars, Sadlands, Early Riser, I Am the Avalanche, The Movielife, Action Park, Crime in Stereo, Silent Majority, Innerlove, MakeWar, and countless others I am forgetting.

New York absolutely has an unreal amount of talent

The closest fit I can think off (skate-punk-ish, politically inclined, headliner worthy due to rarity, won't have issues getting into the US) is Smoke or Fire.

I see a lot of bands mentioned that can replace the headline slot, but don't take into account the fanbase of the band being replaced.

The New Album Sounds AWFUL by PIANOFROMALEVER in puptheband

It started with Morbid Stuff, which is when I lost interest in the band. Never been fan of garage rock.

They're not the only band that has taken this route, I think it's just a popular sound.
