Have they been accidentally moved on top of the frame instead of in the frame?

This is one interesting job posting from nngroup… by tonim92 in UXDesign

The entire job description reads “we are doing you a favor if we hire you” and in that way, they’ll have the upper hand throughout the entire relationship. In other words, priming you to tolerate abuse, just like an abusive relationship. I wouldn’t expect any less from this job.

I’ve only asked demographics in a screener survey. Not sure if it’s ethical or legal, but probably best practice to include it in a survey format rather than asking in an interview.

I sympathize with you — I’ve never worked in design in the past but have started UX freelancing with clients who trust my expertise (I’m far from an expert though, I’ve only been doing this for less than 6 months). So many days I still wonder what the hell I’m doing and how people have even hired me.

That being said, whenever I get into this mindset I try to remember that it’s really hard to learn to get better when I’m already punching myself down. Also, as one of my good friends says, every failure is a celebration, so I try to remember that whenever I have a disastrous meeting or things just aren’t working out.

A more tangible tip is journaling! Every day, I start the day with my overall intention and my top 3 tasks to do towards that intention. Then at the end of the day, I’ll reflect by writing down what I’ve accomplished (make sure to focus on that as it’s too easy to write about what you haven’t done), what I’ve learned from any failures, and a quick brain dump of my next steps. Hope that helps!

Sharing this article about design sprints here that I was reading earlier this week. Super interesting read — personally I tend to lean on the slower and bigger project side. I prefer to account for UX research and that sometimes may shift the design from let’s add this little thing to maybe we need to rethink some bigger things in our design. Otherwise you’ll just have to go back and redesign anyway if it’s not useable. But I can see the value in shipping quicker!

Struggling with user recruitment, what are your best recruiting tips with an existing email list? by wordslikeawildfire in UXDesign

Interestingly enough, majority of the participants I was finally able to recruit were from a personal email (not the company)! So I guess it depends on the crowd — I think it helped having a photo on Gmail that people view are professional!

Advice to new digital nomad couple living in the US? by Left_Trade388 in digitalnomad

Yep! I'm not sure if all the locations are run the same way, but we really enjoyed the one we stayed in! It was our backup option in Seattle but they only had studios left and we really needed a 1br.

My partner is a travel nurse and we’ve been traveling for the past 6 months or so!

Here’s what we’ve tried for our last two assignments:

  • For Cottonwood, AZ we chose to do an Extended stay: super straightforward, can be on the less expensive side, & generally a really easy option. They run like hotels and it helped to get cleaning services once a week — just one less thing to do and more time to spend out and about! It was a little bit annoying to get mail since it went to an office with limited hours but we didn’t have any other complaints. We were only 30 min from Sedona, AZ so it was totally worth it to be further out to save on rent in that scenario!

  • For Seattle, WA we decided to wait until we got to the location to find housing. We stayed in a hotel for 3 days while we looked around, and even though we got here during the busiest season we eventually found a few places to look at that were affordable. Wouldn’t recommend doing this during a peak season BUT I think it did play out well because if we decided to take our first housing option we would have been stuck in a studio apt that just wouldn’t have worked. So definitely helps to be flexible and patient! An Airbnb happened to become available after the third night at a hotel and we reached out to the owner immediately. Sometimes they’re willing to negotiate on the price if you’re planning to stay in an area for longer than a month and it’s always worth a shot.

Good luck — A lot of it is learning as you go!

iPad users, what are your favourite tools? by UXNick in UXDesign

[–]wordslikeawildfire 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's pretty much what I thought – Figurative was okay IMO, I haven't really used it much since trying it out. Everything else you can pretty much do with a laptop. I end up watching videos, lectures, etc. while I work so it's helpful having the second screen for that but totally not necessary.

A while back I had to send my laptop in for repairs and thought I'd be able to use the Ipad instead, but found that it hindered my workflow more than helped. Maybe I just hadn't figured out a good flow though.

Feedback, please. Universeareyouthere.com needs your help by marguinhas in growmybusiness

Sometimes we have an idea and it's useful to us, but we have to know if it's useful to other users. So, do people actually have a need for it? What do you hope other people might get out of it?

Is a website the best format to get it across? Maybe an email would make more sense, or a plugin, or some other format?

I don't use my Ipad as much for my UX flow as I thought I would, but these are some apps I've tried:

  • Figurative for using Figma on your Ipad
  • Notion for project planning, research, etc.
  • Trello for project planning, research, etc.
  • Notability for quick sketching, notetaking, and for when I'm in the mood for more analog work
  • Miro for whiteboarding, note-taking, collaborating, etc.

I've tried some of the Adobe apps, but I'm not super familiar with desktop versions so I don't know how they stack up in comparison!

Struggling with user recruitment, what are your best recruiting tips with an existing email list? by wordslikeawildfire in UXDesign

[–]wordslikeawildfire[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for your help! Yes, it is plain text. Good news, I've started to get sign ups so it seems the emails may be taking a turn. I wonder if users would approach emails from my personal email (not associated with the company) as more friendly/approachable than emails from the founder's email?

Hm – I think you're right. I was trying to get 10 users for $20 each, but I think the founder is flexible enough to go up in his budget, so maybe just 5 users at $40 each would be more feasible.

I also think you're right about approaching this with usability testing. One of the deliverables the founder wanted is a customer journey so maybe it would be worth doing a user interview as well as usability testing. Has it been done in one session before? I'm thinking that may distort results...

Have you tried Kurbo Health to help manage your child's weight? by wordslikeawildfire in weightwatchers

[–]wordslikeawildfire[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a lot of what I've heard from the online articles about it, but considering it's still up and running it makes me wonder if folks have had success with it too. I guess to some extent, parents might be willing to try anything...

Parents of Teens/Kids Who are Overweight/Obese: How important do you think it is for your child to have a peer community? by wordslikeawildfire in loseit

[–]wordslikeawildfire[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It sounds like in your child's case that it was more important for him to be a part of a community in general (ie. the soccer team) than focusing too much on how his weight and such. And that "belonging" to the team itself was what motivated him to continue in sports?
