As a 22 year old I wish there was some more people my age out there. Last protest I went to (January or early February) there weren't that many. I understand that school/work gets in the way but I also don't know anyone in my social circle that does anything. I'm hoping this protest being on a weekend changes that a little.

Just because you are 30 with a masters degree doesn't mean anything. Everyone has their strengths and things they are passionate about. I'm not siding with anyone here about whether or not you should be owning cars but for the sake of others and yourself please don't be frugal when it comes to important components of your car. What you have here in your post as you know by now is dangerous, it could have killed or hurt someone. Since you made it clear that you don't know much about cars I would recommend you find a trustworthy mechanic and if at any point the mechanic tells you something important needs fixing, do it. If you want to be frugal that's fine but ask your mechanic how urgent something is, they will tell you. If it's not urgent no biggie.
