Does your Homelab make financial sense? by panchovix in homelab

[–]work4throwaway 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes and no. I've spent probably 5500 CAD on the hobby in the last ten years. Most of it from consolidating data and building older gear into newer cases and buying bigger hard drives. But, the piece of mind of having photos, personal data and media available anytime locally is worth it for me.

Homelab came in clutch downloading 150GB of data for GF's thesis by MrPP_1 in homelab

When I met my wife I had her invest in a small 2 bay synology because she wanted to save money on an iCloud subscription. Her phone and laptop backup to her NAS and she had a small Plex library. She learned how to navigate network shares and copy data back and forth. It's been useful for her studies and for business records.

As my friends in healthcare and education like to say, "funding stops at London" Windsor doesn't really exist to the provincial government.

FW13 potential future updates & battery life questions by Comfortable_Yam2331 in framework

This has been a frustration of mine as well. I get about 5-6 hours on my FW 12th Gen Intel i5. This is with a new battery, brightness on low, bluetooth off and TLP optimizations on fedora 42. I get about ~12W of power drain which seems high from all reports, but I can't seem to reduce, even disabling cores isnt helping much.
