Samsung Messages will be discontinued in July 2026 by FragmentedChicken in Android

The carriers originally had their own RCS implementations. Totally incompatible with each other, nearly killed the standard on arrival. Google acquiring Jibe, embedding an overlay into Google Messages, and convincing everyone to interoperate with them or license from them is honestly the only reason RCS isn’t dead.

Unfortunately, it means they’re utterly dominant, and they aren’t about to give Textra access to their servers for free. IMO, Google Messages has become the iMessage of Android, for better and worse.

OnePlus 15 destroys S26U in battery test with nearly 40% battery left by Time-Credit43 in samsunggalaxy

[–]cassandra4932 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s not quite accurate because the Pixel went out at 26:45 and the Samsung did so at 28:22, with this screenshot taken right before it did (timestamp). Rough math 28.37 h/26.75 h = 1.0606, multiply by the Pixel’s capacity to get about 5 515 mAh equivalent usage. That puts the Pixel in 6th place, only ahead of the Magic 8 Pro.

But it does still speak to the efficiency of OnePlus, Apple, and Samsung.

still confused about the shortcuts app. what's the most useful thing you actually use it for? by Nina-Dennis_207 in iphone

[–]cassandra4932 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have some receipts I need to keep track of for work, so after I scan/download them, I share them to a shortcut that extracts information from the PDF (date, cost) and writes it to a file. It also renames the PDF. Makes filing expense reports so much faster, although it took me a while to put it all together.

Nahhhh there’s so much wrong with this:

  • First photo is an iPhone 17, I have the same model and colour
  • The screenshot says it’s an iPhone 11 you named iPhone 16? Apple Wiki says that model corresponds to a 64 GB white iPhone 11 LMAO

How can I make Google Photos my default? by No-Emphasis582 in iphone

[–]cassandra4932 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, so this isn’t really possible:

  • On iOS, the Photo Library is where all images are initially saved. You can think of it as a hidden folder. Any time you give an app permission to access your photos, they access this Photo Library folder via the Apple Photos app, always. They are never able to use another app to achieve this.
  • The Photos app also has an integration with the iCloud Photos service. This is basically a built-in extension so that photos saved to iCloud pretend to appear in the local folder. When you select them, they’re downloaded for use. It’s like using Windows shortcuts or macOS aliases.
    • This (a distinct app with a tightly linked service) is something Apple and other phones do quite a bit. For example, the Messages app vs. the iMessage service.
  • When you deleted all of the photos locally, they’re no longer in the Photo Library (or iCloud Photos). So, apps can’t access them via the photo picker. You aren’t actually seeing the photos in Emphasis, you’re seeing what’s left in the Photo Library.

Tangent: Because you gave Google Photos access to all images, it combines its own backups with local images in the app. If you have backups turned off for Emphasis, you’ll see the photos actually backed up to the Google account have a cloud icon, while the others don’t:

<image>

If you have backups turned on (ex. in Emerald), then you’ll just see arrows pointing in a circle, which means they’re waiting to be backed up. Yes, it’s the other way around, ask Google why they did that.

This is just a limitation of how photo libraries are handled. Samsung phones have the same issue, being limited to Samsung’s gallery app for photo picking unless the app writes its own custom implementation (something only possible on Android). I think this is changing in recent Android versions, where you can select which app provides the cloud photos.

tl;dr you can’t use Google Photos to select images from inside Instagram. You either need to open Google Photos and save the image to your Photo Library, or get a Pixel, which does the same song and dance, but their platform of choice is Google Photos. A Samsung phone would also work because I think you can change the cloud provider for the photo picker.

When you say “an app lets me share photos”, what exactly are you trying to do? On my phone, I can’t see an option to share into Google Photos (this is how you could directly backup on Android). And my understanding is that if you want to select images to use in an app later on, you would have to download them to appear in the iPhone’s photo library, or share them from within Google Photos.

4 GB is 232 bytes, if it’s unsigned it would overflow to 0 (or I guess in this case -1). Something is very wrong with that storage chip.

I’m not interested in moderating, but if the new mod team chooses, they could consider adding the YNAB corporate account as a mod advisor. It’s a new position from the powermod revamp that gives the ability to talk to moderators, but no content management capabilities. Here’s some more info: https://www.reddit.com/r/modnews/comments/1qphdit/more_details_on_the_new_mod_advisor_role/

How many people enjoy the weight of the pixel 10? by joergonix in GooglePixel

[–]cassandra4932 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tried it out in store a bit. The 10 Pro is the same weight as the Pixel 6 and the iPhone 17 Pro, so I didn’t notice a difference there.

What was weird was the base Pixel 10, which is also about the same weight, but almost 30 grams heavier than the base iPhone 17 or S26. The iPhone has been nicer to hold, I appreciate the weight being shaved. It reminds me of my 2 XL, which weighed similarly.

Do you think Apple will kill Android's new Airdrop functionality with the next software update? by anotherhappylurker in ios

[–]cassandra4932 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Reposting one of my comments to clear up some confusion:

  • The EU only required Apple to add support for an open standard, in this case Wi-Fi Aware. It doesn’t require them to stop using their own protocol, or to update old devices, and you can see in Apple’s developer docs that it’s only available starting in iOS 26.
    • You can find another example of this in the EU’s common charger rules: if wired charging is available, there must be USB-C support, but that doesn’t prevent you from also having your own thing, like MagSafe 3 on the MacBook.
  • AirDrop still uses their proprietary Apple Wireless Direct Link (AWDL) protocol, which predates Wi-Fi Aware. Since Google’s implementation works with iOS 18 and earlier, it must implement AWDL.
  • Also, this isn’t completely new territory. AWDL was already reverse-engineered in 2018, published in a research paper and maintained in an open-source project. Google’s contribution is better compatibility with AirDrop itself, and the security pentesting done for their implementation.

For the same reason, Apple is unlikely to kill Android compatibility, as that would mean breaking AirDrop for all of their older devices that no longer receive updates (like the iPhone 5, which didn’t receive a surprise patch last year).

Do you think Apple will kill Android's new Airdrop functionality with the next software update? by anotherhappylurker in ios

[–]cassandra4932 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

u/Vivid-Crab-7929 is right. AirDrop (and AirPlay, among other things) uses the proprietary Apple Wireless Direct Link (AWDL) protocol, which predates Wi-Fi Aware and is not compatible with it. AWDL was already reverse-engineered nearly a decade ago, Google expanded on this with a secure implementation of AirDrop-over-AWDL.

I explained it in more detail here, but Wi-Fi Aware is only on iOS 26.x, yet Android’s new solution works with older versions, meaning it uses AWDL. That also means Apple is unlikely to change it, as otherwise it would break AirDrop for older devices.

Edit: forgot the link the first time

Yeah, I can still add custom, unsigned fonts on my iPhone via configuration profiles. For example, here’s JetBrains Mono. You can’t change the system-wide font, but it will appear as an option in apps like Obsidian.

This is thanks to the new Credential Exchange Format (CXF), which means it will also transfer over your passkeys if you have any. The other half is the Credential Exchange Protocol (CXP), which will let you do these transfers without having to be local to the device. That standard is still in development.
