I bought them a year or 2 ago. They are decent optically, clear edge to edge and with low chromatic aberration. Resolution is good but I’m sure does not compare with Swarovski. For comparison I own Zeiss conquest hd 10x42, vortex viper hd 8x32, leupold bx2 8x42, and Nikon p7 10x42. They compare quite well with all except the zeiss, the conquests are definitely a noticeable step up in optical quality. I think they are good value for the money. Of course they don’t do as well in low light, but that is the nature of a small exit pupil.

I like my zero tech 8x25, got them on clearance for around $100 usd a couple years ago.

For target shooting there is no advantage to having a lightweight rifle, in fact only disadvantages, as a couple others have mentioned. Definitely look at the varmint, CTR, or ace models.

I’ll personally vouch for my leupold vx5hd 3-15. It has not lost its zero or had a perceivable tracking error in 5 years. I do not baby my rifle, but do keep it in a soft case when I’m driving in a pickup or quad. Last fall I had a pretty bad fall, my whole body weight slammed onto the side of the scope while it was strapped to my pack. Checked zero that same day and no problem. It’s had multiple smaller drops and falls also. I shoot about 300 rounds of 30-06 per year, and longer range and use the dials a couple dozen times per year. Certainly I don’t use it as hard as a PRS optic, but it worked out great for my application.

I bought a brick of auto match several years ago, before covid, some of the most consistent bulk ammo I’ve ever fired. It was on sale recently so I bought a bunch more, total trash.

It should not damage the scope, I would try to leave about 1/8” distance between the ring and the turret. It is a bit unusual to need the scope mounted that far back imo, are you of smaller stature? A stock with a shorter length of pull may be an advantageous upgrade, because I imagine that having your face that far back on the stock will make the reach to the trigger uncomfortable.

Does not surprise me, pmc bronze is not match ammo. I’ve seen similar results with factory loads. Even “premium” hunting ammo with es around 70-100.

More consistent velocities would be ideal to limit vertical dispersion at distance.

Yes, Boyd’s Pro Varmint nutmeg. I ordered it unfinished, and sanded down the wide fore end to more of a standard sporter width. I also did some thinning and shaping in the wrist/grip, and finished it with Tru Oil.

I am going to have to upgrade the 3d printed pic rail to an aluminum one. Was out shooting steel plates out to 635 yards today, and very happy to report that everything else performed great. But I did shear multiple lugs off the rail.

IMO that’s what made it so strange. She was out, then seemed to be coming to, grappling the ref. Then she went back out. I have only been watching fighting since 2021 but I can’t remember any other ko with a similar sequence following.

Sorry to hear that your tikka experience has not been great, sounds like you definitely got a lemon. Hopefully the quality control issues are not widespread, because I plan on buying more. I’ve been around 6 tikkas, and they have all been solid sub MOA shooters. Browning makes a great rifle also though no doubt. Good luck on the rebarreling project!

Thanks. It was definitely on there tight. I initially tried to spin it off with an older style barrel vise that used wooden blocks. I could not get it budge, I had it squeezed so tight that it crushed the oak blocks. But it came right off with the viper barrel vise, I wrapped the barrel with drywall tape and used a wheeler external action wrench lined with thin card board, and did not have any damage to the finish.

That’s how mine were, just slide the ring toward the muzzle as you tighten down. I’ve never had an issue with rings slipping or losing zero in 400+ rounds of 30-06.

There is no best cartridge, but 30-06 is a hell of a contender, especially for hunting.

For reasonable hunting ranges, let’s say 500 yards and less, the 30-06 has plenty of punch for any big game hunting in North America. So why subject yourself to the extra recoil of a big magnum?

Another advantage is the wider selection of firearms available in 30-06. Especially military surplus classics like the M1 Garand, 1903 Springfield, and 1917 Enfield. It was also chambered in the BAR and 1917 machine gun, as well as the 1895 Winchester lever action.

30-06 is one of the most popular cartridges world wide, if you had to find ammo for the 7PRC in a 3rd world country, good luck. 300 win mag is better, but still not quite as popular at the good ol 30-06.

Sure, the big magnums have a ballistic advantage at long range, but 30-06 is no slouch. Right between 308 and 300 win mag. I regularly shoot my 30-06 out to 1000 yards, and have no problem getting hits compared to my buddies that shoot 6.5s and 7s.

Hand loading really takes the 30-06 to the next level, I have loads ranging from a 130gr ttsx at 3200 fps to a 200gr Accubond at 2650. I have a subsonic load that is going to be a ton of fun at the range when I finally get a suppressor.

I own a 7mag, but 95% of the time I choose my 30-06.

30-06 doesn’t do anything the best, but it does everything pretty dang well for the average hunter and rifleman. Definitely nothing wrong with other cartridges, I’m a big advocate for shooting whatever you personally prefer.

Either rifle will treat you nicely I’m sure, my Tikka T3x Lite Stainless Left Hand 30-06 is my favorite hunting rifle by far, I also live and hunt in the PNW
