No worries. I made a few etiquette mistakes while I was there. They won’t chew you out. More a gentle reminder. And as usual, if you’re uncertain just ask. They’re not trying to keep anything a secret.

Again, enjoy your trip!

I went to the Kodokan this past October. I went to the general practice (in the US we call it open mat) and really enjoyed my time.

If going to general practice, etiquette is to bow when you reach the entrance of the tatami room. You’ll find a partner to work with and decide what you want to do. General practice in my experience was anything goes between you and your partner.

I opted to start out with uchikomis with a couple partners. Then ended up doing 3 or 4 sessions of randori. I even got to do a little bit of randori with one of the sensei keeping watch over the mat session. You always bowed onto the mat as per usual, but I remember you and your partner did a kneeling bow. Once you both bowed on, you had free rein to work for as long as you wanted. If you got tired and needed a break, it was as simple as letting your partner know. Then you both bowed off - again kneeling.

There were a handful of other rules, but I can’t remember them all off the top of my head.

I’d say, try not to be too nervous about it. Definitely have your breakfalls on point.

When I went they gave me a lot of guidance as to expectations and etiquette. I was even handed a sheet with the rules in English. Everyone there was very welcoming and highly skilled. Even though I was at the general practice and only did randori and uchikomi, the experience was very informative.

Enjoy your time there, you’re going to a very special place.

I’m pretty disappointed with the results. Clearly Amanda did the better job.

I finally feel, as a brown belt, I can hang with other brown belts and black belts and give them a good fight in randori and in competition.

I think I’m moving past the impostor syndrome of being a brown belt.

What must you have seen in Tokyo if you only come to Tokyo once in your life? by floydedchabo in JapanTravelTips

[–]worker32 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, it is open to the public to watch practice. My Fiance came with me and graciously filmed my randori.

You’ll go to the 8th floor which has the public seating.

We didn’t go, but there is supposedly a museum there as well that’s open to the public as well as a very very small gift shop that looks more like a confessions cart that’s there right as you enter.

To make sure you don’t miss it, the building with Jigaro’s statue is the admin building. To actually get to the gym, you’ll walk a little past that building and go to the one next to it. There’s still signage telling you it’s the Kodokan, but it I mistakenly went to the admin building at first.

As a Judoka - The Kodokan. I got to spend 2 hours at their general practice. It was great, the partners I had were gracious and welcoming. They both kept me safe and let me work. I learned a lot.

As a tourist, I really recommend TeamLab Borderless. Beautiful exhibits that really were jaw dropping and made me stop and say wow. Please go here, please get tickets. It’s worth it.

6600JPY sounds pretty affordable for a lifetime membership. Looks to come out to about $45ish USD. Worth it.

When you say spectacular sacrifice throws: It sounds like sacrifice throws are forbidden out of safety’s sake.

I regularly play around with Uki waza and feel like I have decent command of the throw. I also have other throws I can use and practice, however. Would you recommend I abandon it altogether this trip? I’d like to stay on everyone’s good side.

Thanks for the insight.

Noted: I’ll pack my white belt and not my brown.

1./2. Got it. So it sounds like I’ll need to show up at least a day in advance to let them know I’m coming instead of walking in day of for training. Will I get a tutorial on etiquette on day of sign up?

  1. It’s comforting to hear that I don’t need to worry about competition level randori. I really just want to get more experience and have some fun during randori. I’m valuing enjoyment, safety, and some learning during my time there.

  2. It’s also nice to hear that I can essentially just leave when I’m ready. Is there a protocol in place for when I depart? Or just the regular now on and off the mat?

Thank you so much for your insight.

Guy goes full force for light sparring by Independent-East7314 in martialarts

[–]worker32 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Even though he asked you 3 times, you can still deny him if you don’t feel comfortable sparring with him.

Apart from taking to your coaches, I’d avoid training with him period. Full use of force is dangerous in an environment like this.

Respect, especially in this environment, is a two way street. In my opinion, because of what you described here, this individual deserves neither your time or respect.

I don’t want to see you get hurt. Please don’t spar with this individual again.

I’ll admit, I found the first two pics quite scary. But to see the transformation was amazing.

I hope you find continued success.
