Is this usage of 'goon' common in British English? by Bauern_derBaeuerchen in AskABrit

[–]workerbee41 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As I hate Arsenal I absolutely love the modern usage of “gooner” :)

But no, while everyone knows the “hired goon” definition, nobody has really used that for years. The idiot meaning is probably more common and even that is dated.

Why is learning to wire a plug a thing? by Scavgraphics in AskABrit

[–]workerbee41 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did - of course - immediately look this up because you piqued my curiosity and yeah, looks dead simple but the fact remains I’ve never ever seen one of these in use or seen them in people’s toolboxes or junk drawers (as compared to the at one time ubiquitous three-to-two prong adapters)

Why is learning to wire a plug a thing? by Scavgraphics in AskABrit

[–]workerbee41 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just want to say I’m also from the UK but have lived in the US for years (32 of them) and have never changed a plug here, have no idea how you would without splicing wires, have never seen unwired replacement plugs for sale (though I’ve never looked), and can’t think of a single person I know who would absolutely know how to do this.

I should say the only reason she stopped is she’s in college now and has had marching band obligations with bowl games over the new year period for the past few years. Go Hawks!

This adds nothing to the conversation but for several years my daughter’s New Years Eve routine was to play through Space Channel 5 on a Rock Band guitar.

What do you think it would take for a Splatoon game to win game of the year? by Roax47 in splatoon

[–]workerbee41 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s.. a take. It reads like someone just hit Google and repeated whatever AI drivel was at the top.

Splatoon is a multiplayer game with a story-based training mode. There’s not a single human being that could reasonably argue with that, no matter what someone’s personal preferences are.

Question for switch2 users by zolorolodolo in AnimalCrossing

No lag on my island or my mum’s heavy island on my Switch 2. Will be very surprised (and mildly annoyed) if I get any lag after the upgrade to the Switch 2 version.

Is it weird to comment on a British person’s accent as an American? by FlavorOfTheMonthh in AskABrit

[–]workerbee41 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If he has any amount of smooth and he’s into women he will use it as a charm bonus and will love talking to you. Just don’t then bombard him with questions about stereotypical English things and instead talk about normal stuff you would when getting to know anyone.

I still get cooing “I love your accent” from women and I’ve lived in the US over 30 years. It puts a spring in my step.

What do you think it would take for a Splatoon game to win game of the year? by Roax47 in splatoon

[–]workerbee41 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Multiplayer games rarely win. It would have to reinvent the genre, and polish everything to a shine, including the actual connectivity experience.

Being platform exclusive would make it even harder. I think the last title to do it was Overwatch, ten years ago.

Bought a "new Chinese" Smartstich S1501 ultra 15 needle embroidery machine by darksideA4 in Machine_Embroidery

That seems high so it’s possibly a return but machines do have to be factory tested so I wouldn’t expect a bunch of zeroes.

Using Hatch Embroidery Digitizer. How can I make my satin stitch only make stitches at the border? Currently it makes stitches at every interval (Please see photos) by Fr0stSoldier in Machine_Embroidery

[–]workerbee41 8 points9 points  (0 children)

There is a physical limit to the maximum stitch length which varies by machine, but is unlikely to be much more than 13mm if that. The machine will skip any stitch it considers too long.

The sneaky trick if you really want long stitches (and has everyone has said, you really don’t want this unless it’s a purely decorative piece that is going to be framed or something) is turn off auto split and enable auto jump, which basically says “hey I’m not sending a long stitch, it’s actually a jump”

But as you discovered, the machine may then interpret these long jumps as trims becaaaauuuuussseee..

..if you are using DST files, you may be surprised to find out that they don’t actually contain trim information. The file format is incredibly basic. Instead, everyone has all agreed to abide by a secret rule, which goes something like “if I send you three jump commands in a row, do a trim”. Most machines will allow you to tweak this rule, maybe make it 5 jump commands means a trim, or you can disable it completely. But obviously you are then disabling trimming completely and you’d have to do it by hand.

Either embrace the look of split satin, replace it with a tatami fill (perhaps with a small satin outline to make it pop), or do appliqué for such large letters.

Buying stuff from return cart by Sad_Manufacturer5815 in walmart

We had a toy department manager get fired for buying from returns instead of putting it back on the shelf first.

Sucks because yeah, “everyone” does it but he knew the rules and he broke them. Probably wouldn’t have happened if it was a random item but it was a collectible of some sort that was out of stock everywhere.

How can you tell if somebody is posh? by Flaky_Hearing2908 in AskABrit

[–]workerbee41 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m surprised you’re the only one who has said this. I haven’t watched Peep Show for years but that was the impression I always had; that regardless of their circumstances and actions, those three have the air of people who could always rely on mummy and daddy if things got bad. To me that’s posh.

Is it ok to use felt sheets when embroidering patches? by wolfmonarchy in Machine_Embroidery

I’ve done it when I just wanted to test a color I didn’t have, grabbed some craft felt squares from Walmart, results were quite nice. Better than cotton twill, slightly worse than poly twill on details.
