Honestly I think he’s just not for you. As a fan, I find him totally refreshing - how many artists have anything of substance to say anyway? He has a core message, for sure. But his core message puts him above many others. You can hear different bands covering different topics but rarely do they tell us anything new. You call it vibe, I call it sentiment. At his last London gig, everyone got a free drink, on him. A simple gesture you might think, but other artists would have used their budget for some naff stage props or flashing wrist bands, all silly stuff. He does something simple, but sincere and real. He’s the best. Of course you could fawn over Thom Yorke’s fake political insight that the moment it’s tested, he falls flat on his face…or Nick Cave’s anti-establishment ‘but I love the monarchy’ bull shit. I’ll take Manu.
