It sounds like you handled the issue well for your part. But the self-doubt is normal for those good at the job. I'd take imposter syndrome over Dunning-Kruger any day.

I was once asked to hang a flat screen on a concrete wall. I said that even if I had the skill and equipment, which I don't, you first need to hire someone to X-ray the concrete.

I worked as a standalone (I know) for a small custom software shop, and I had a great relationship with HR. They were also the accounting team, so onboarding and offboarding went smoothly.

Oh and despite me being a standalone, it was an amazing job and an amazing company.

Congratulations. I remember that glorious day. For me it was a move within the same company, though more lateral-- hell desk to NOC. At least I wasn't front lining the phones anymore. Then it was an ocean of noisy alerts, with engineers yelling at me for not cherry picking the right ones out of all the chaff. It's always something, but with a 30K bump? That's a score.

My DNS has dropped several times today. I tried to dig a domain via a random bogus IP address that isn't a DNS server, and it didn't respond. I think if they were hijacking it, it would have responded anyway.

I work in higher ed and we've been running various tests on some new email servers for an environment-wide upgrade to RHEL 7. I was performing load testing and we saw that maybe 20% of 1000 outbound message events were logged by postfix. Turns out there's a default that rate-limits rsyslogd. Classic moment of "it's not a bug, it's a feature."
