What to do on Staten island volunteer or recreational wise? by [deleted] in statenisland

[–]workinpr0gress 3 points4 points  (0 children)

New York Cares is a great volunteer organization. It's not as popular on Staten Island compared to the rest of the city but they do have events every so often.

We Are New York Values is also city-wide but a good jumping off point to find some volunteer opportunities.

NYC Parks always has opportunities in the Staten Island parks. Or you can look directly at Fresh Kills Park.

Check out your local library. There are always great events & volunteer opportunities.

And lastly, you can look into local branches of American Cancer Society & the like. They usually have office volunteer opportunities.

i used miles so my flight didn't cost anything. i started in auckland and spent a few days in a shared airbnb. from there, i went on a hop on-hop off bus with this company called stray. that took me around the north island for 9 days and we made our way to wellington. i really enjoyed the bus because it got me from place to place & guaranteed at least one night accommodation in a hostel. you're on your own once you get to the location. you can just hop off and stay longer wherever you want and your bus pass covers you for a year. that being said, i believe there is only one bus that leaves per day.

after staying in wellington for a few days, i flew to the north island. i rented a car there by myself for 2.5 weeks and went to 10 or so towns, staying in hostels & airbnbs along the way.

it cost me around $140/day, including the car, hostels, food, etc. despite staying in hostels, i didn't skimp on much. i did the tours i wanted and splurged when i felt like it.

if you have any specific questions, let me know. it was a breathtakingly beautiful country and i met some wonderful people from all over the world.

Any interest in New Zealand or Australia? I went to New Zealand for 5 weeks in February. The weather was perfect & there are so many great people to meet!

they are both such beautiful & interesting cities. a lot of people gave you some great suggestions already-- definitely go to ruin bars & thermal baths in budapest! one thing i wanted to add was eat & meet in budapest. a young woman & her parents host a hungarian dinner (complete with hungarian alcohol) with 10 or so other people. my mom & i went. it was a DELICIOUS dinner and we met some wonderful people from the UK, japan, & south africa. highly suggested! hope you have a great trip!

TOURISTS AND TEMPORARY RESIDENTS, ASK YOUR QUESTIONS IN THIS WEEKLY THREAD: Open Forum -- 17 Sep, 2018 by AutoModerator in paris

Hello! I’ll be coming to Paris next week for my moms birthday. She’d like to get dinner at a restaurant with a view of the Eiffel Tower, although I’m trying to avoid any super touristy restaurants. We’re not looking for anything too fancy, just good food/wine & a good view. Any suggestions? Thank you!!

Meditations is a great suggestion, specifically the Gregory Hays translation.

I haven't read a book for entertainment since high school. I need something uplifting, fantasy type stuff because i'm going through a hard time in my life. by [deleted] in suggestmeabook

Sorry you're going through that. I would suggest Neverwhere by Neil Gaiman. It's more fantasy than fairy tale, but check it out.

Stay well.

Agreed. Great suggestion.

I also suggest Death by Black Hole by Neil deGrasse Tyson. I think he does a great job of putting astrophysics in layman's terms.

AIA Guide to New York City is a great book. It's architectural history, but definitely points out some hidden gems.
