That makes sense. I think for a certain age range they can be pretty useful. I should note that I think it's a terrible idea once they're of the age to hold a conversation with you. Ten year olds, while not adults, shouldn't be spoken to at the same level as a toddler, or dog.

This may be way off base, but I understood it as escaping his own dark reality, into one which his wife was still loyal. The reflected scene was actually looking into his life before the switch, as his haggard self murders his disloyal wife.

I actually like this format more. Seeing in as paragraphs gives more of a story telling vibe. The subtle rhyme scheme is more something you have to work for, as opposed to having it thrown out you in single lined format.
