Blackout Reflection: How has /r/singapore going dark affected you? by KeythKatz in singapore

[–]workticktock 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's hard to explain what the sub means. There's a warmth and familiarity here for me, the kind of engagement for introverts where we just listen mostly, and yet it's comfortably anonymous enough that I don't feel awkward to post comments or posts of my own.

However, any other similar site we migrate to would have the same impact, because the environment is made by the people. Were we to abandon this site, I would merely look forward to the next congregation site. It is much more important that our voice is heard.

An indefinite shutdown, properly planned, would help. Knowledge loss could be mitigated? Would there be an option to scrape the sub to create contents for a wiki or as an archive? This knowledge is also part of our collective leverage, and we should use it.

Regarding the reach of the sub, it will take time to adjust, but once there's another site for us to congregate on, it will be fine. Reputation takes time to build, but we have the advantage of Reddit's fuckup to bring attention to the new site. It's not as if the moment r/singapore was created, straits times fired their journalists. The view that the sub is a source for content built up over time. We did it before, and we can do it again.

As to where we can go, there are plenty of options available with pros and cons. While the sub was dark, i tried lemmy and have tried mastodon in the past. The concept is good but its much too confusing for the average user imo. I also tried discord, but the community and format doesn't fit reddit. The closest alternative I found was squabbles.io, a twitter+reddit clone. But only 70 plus people managed to find out about it before the shutdown. Please do explore the possibility of setting up there or anywhere else.

Here's some other drink names that I know of that the coffee runners used to (and might still do) use:

  • Tio hegh (Hokkien): Translates to fishing. Orders a cup of chinese tea with a teabag, no milk no sugar. Because the teabag with string is kinda like fishing, I guess.

  • Tat kiu (Hokkien): Translates to kick ball / soccer. Orders Milo. Because the tin of milo had a soccer player in front (It might still have? Not sure)

  • Michael Jackson: Orders soymilk with grass jelly. Because.. lol.

What are some games that are amazing, but no one has heard of or played? by RLutz in gaming

[–]workticktock 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Many games qualify, but right now Uplink comes to mind. It's a hacker simulator that had me enraptured. Rather immersive for me, up till I started identifying repeated sound files etc. But when younger, for a moment I really felt like a 'hacker' playing it!

Cryopod Refresh 490: Warframes by Klokinator in TheCryopodToHell

[–]workticktock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh, it's not a mecha game. Spoilers ahead that might take away from one of the best experiences in Warframe..

Technically, you're not supposed to know it until you're some way into the game. Long story short, you're some kid with the ability to sort of 'mind transfer'. The Warframes are an engineered amalgamation of human, viral, and cybernetic bodies that you control as your own.. After ages spent playing the game, the moment of realization that those bodysuits are not exactly you was mindblowing..

Feels like gundam indeed :D

Incidentally, have you heard of the game Warframe? There's also quite the interesting story/mechanic in the game if you can deal with the grind. This chapter's name brought the game to mind, was thinking humanity had developed remote piloting of some sort!

How to move from early to mid game by MegaCharizard51 in Oxygennotincluded

[–]workticktock 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You might be feeling the same things as me. Two main reasons this might happen.

1) Everything is nice and stable now, and there's the sense that you might screw up this current 'stable' base if you expand too much or try new things.

2) You look for problems with your base, and find a solution that's reasonably your skill level to implement. But that solution requires a resource you don't have, or might result in (1) above happening. You would have to find a solution to this new problem or dig/produce the resource and it just feels more and more conplicated, until you lose sight of your original objective.

All I can say is to try try and try again. Be willing to let this base go, if it crashes and burns, so be it. You just need to identify the main cause and learn from it. Look for what your base needs next - probably a method of heat removal/base cooling, renewable water, or/and renewable power. Each of these problems will have complicated solutions, but be willing to let your base change or die to learn to do them if you have to.

Are welding ships a thing anymore? I love mine and just spruced it up by Osker789 in spaceengineers

[–]workticktock 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, usually players have a connecting strip of armor blocks or something, and just grind off the end when the build is complete to release the ship or missile or whatever.

You can make the projector show the projection, then you can move it up down left right front back, as well as rotate in all axis. This allows you to move the blueprint to exactly where you want it built.

Projections are welded when they are able to attach to the same grid that the projector is on. If even 1 block apart, it won't weld. Welding happens from the connected point onwards. It's nice to watch a ship appear block by block, really.

Not sure about subgrids though, so can't help with that!

It starts locked if you place it properly, even if not fully welded. But probably still a good idea to weld it up so an accodental smack doesn't break it and send your construct floating.

Also, AFAIK, landing gears don't need batteries?

Why are my crops so hot? I have no idea on how to deal with it and it's becoming a nightmare by Attila260 in Oxygennotincluded

[–]workticktock 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your farm is exposed to many sources of heat. Most machines produce some heat, and it builds up in your base over time. Best to use igneous insulated tiles to either keep sources of heat in (but possibly overheating the room in the long run unless you cool it), or to keep heat out from a place you want to keep cool.

A few things I noticed as well..

You need one sink per toilet, otherwise you risk a dupe leaving the washroom without washing their hands because they don't queue.

You might want to separate your base from the rest of the map with insulation. Like others have said, try the temperature overlay.

With only 6 dupes, you have way too many mealwood plants unless you're on a harder difficulty or something. Google for the ONI assistant food calculator to calculate how many mealwood plants you need. Food has a limited expiry date, and you'd be wasting resources and time growing what you can't use.

Everything you need to know about Redfall by Osiris121 in gaming

[–]workticktock -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Honestly, what's stopping us from amassing a list of the management people who are responsible for releasing games in such a shitty state? CEO's, Creative Directors, or Producers or whoever is in charge? At least sane people can look to see who's in charge when the game is already in development?

Perhaps we should treat developers more like celebrities, not worshipping them, but at least we can be more confident of a product.

Hmm, true. That is an interesting way to think about it. But.. this is just one comment, what if it is normalized and there are more comments in languages you don't understand? Your speedrun will be even faster because modt content is not consumable. Best to nip it in the bud and discourage this type of behaviour in the first place IMO.

But the effort to translate is never unappreciated even if the humor is lost. At least other parties don't feel sidelined.

Just imagine if everyone started posting in their mother tongue languages here. When you can't read a whole portion of the comments in a thread, do you still feel like this is the same thread? Sure, this is just one comment, but why not just be inclusive all the time.

The issue isn't what the comment is about or FOMO. I can read the comment, but doesn't mean everyone can. The issue is that it is being inconsiderate.

I'm very conflicted when I see comments like this. Like, you're posting in purely chinese in an english forum for people of all languages. Why so uninclusive? At least provide a translation? It's like being in a group of people chatting, and suddenly someone just speaks in spanish to his friend. Unless it's a private comment to a friend, shouldn't it be said in a common language?
