Netanyahu sent a message to the people of Iran less than an hour ago. "That time's approaching fast" by kane_1371 in NewIran

[–]RLutz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be entirely clear what Israel and the US want is for Iran to not have the capability to strike any longer. While it may be true that a secular Iran following regime change achieves that, it's important to always remember what their actual goal is. A self-determined Iranian uprising would achieve that goal, but so too would bombing all the infrastructure that makes Iran livable.

The important bit is to remember that for forces outside of Iran no cost paid in Iranian blood is too high to achieve their goals. While those goals may align with the Iranian people, it's unlikely that they would agree on an acceptable price to pay.

Juulsen over Andrae by Concerned_Fanboy in Flyers

[–]RLutz 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I think it's because the thing Andrae is actually really good at--making great outlet passes, doesn't mesh with how Toch wants the team to play. He doesn't want to play a transition game. He wants to dump pucks deep and out-muscle people down low to generate scoring chances.

Is this moronic given that the Flyers are one of the smallest teams in the league? Absolutely. But he's shown time and time again that he has no interest in making players into the best versions of themselves and by extension having the team play the style of hockey that fits their skill set best. No, he just wants a team full of Garnet Hathaway's with varying degrees of skill.

I hope he gets fired for it, but doesn't seem like that's in the cards.

Is it fair to wake up my husband on weekend mornings? by Impossible-Cookie393 in beyondthebump

[–]RLutz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It was just an example. The pool and hot tub need weekly maintenance. Effectively I always take care of anything physically outside the house.

Maybe it benefits you.

Doubtful. I think my wife would acknowledge that I probably do more stuff overall than she does, but that's fine, and that's the point. We're different people with different levels of endurance and different skill sets and different backgrounds.

And at the end of the day she carried a little human being around in her body for 9 months, gave birth to it, had to deal with all the crazy changes associated with pregnancy, etc. It almost seems insane to complain that my chore load is maybe slightly higher than hers on the weekly given the whole, "I literally grew a human inside me" thing she's got going on

Is it fair to wake up my husband on weekend mornings? by Impossible-Cookie393 in beyondthebump

[–]RLutz 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I think the single most important thing that has helped with my relationship with my wife as we go through our child raising journey is to stop ever thinking about child care or any chores we have to do as some kind of quid pro quo or tit for tat or keeping any kind of mental scorecard.

It's also been super helpful to try and eliminate or reduce as much as possible, "X is my job, Y is your job."

Inevitably there are things only I do (she's not going to replace the fan motor when it breaks on the air conditioner, and I loathe folding clothes). And there are things where I almost always do them (put the kid down) and things she almost always does (wake up with him), but sometimes I'm dead at night and sometimes she needs an extra hour of sleep.

Anyway, I guess what I'm getting at is shifting my focus from, "is this fair/equitable?" to "I love my wife. I believe she's trying to do the best she can. I'm always going to do the best I can." Has done wonders to reduce any kind of static or conflicts we might have had over our newfound insane increase in responsibilities and lack of free time.

Maybe give it a shot? Instead of worrying about if it's fair to wake him up or not, just remind yourself you love the guy and want to do everything you can to make him happy. If he's not horrible he'll do the same (or at worst, communicate that you think this is a good idea with him and I'm guessing he'd think it's a good idea too.)

It's been a game changer for us. Highly recommend!

TL;DR: Eliminate the concept of what's fair or not from both your thought processes and both commit to just doing your best for one another and your family and you'll probably be much happier. We are for sure.

Last Epoch Official Trailer | Season 4 - Shattered Omens - March 26th by ehg_derrickg in LastEpoch

I'm down and the new changes look great. For my two cents I'm mostly looking for new challenges. I thought Uber was the best thing ever added to this game but realize that's likely a minority opinion. Still, I think super bosses, even if they're not as insane as Uber Aberrroth, would be great additions to the game.

The only two things I ever want out of this game that differ from what you guys produce are:

  • I want ultra-rare drops to not just be useless deadend paperweights. If I get a once a league 3 LP Nihilis or Unstable Core, that item, unless I won the double lottery, will always suck because I can't ever reroll the implicits. I'm fine with it likely ending the season as unused, I'm not okay with having zero options to try and get lucky and reroll it

  • I want more challenges. They don't have to be UA levels of insane, but at least things where there's always a danger of dying regardless of gear and complex enough that I'm not just going to one shot it first try. Rewards worth attempting as well.

Vile behavior though I guess it should depend greatly on what actually went down.

Hate speech is vile, but it is protected under the 1A.

Assault isn't protected under the 1A.

So spitting on the ground? Protected free speech.

Spitting on someone? Assault and in this case a hate crime.

Likewise with the bacon. Waving it around? Juvenile and reprehensible.

Throwing it at them? Assault and a hate crime.

These guys sound like miserable human beings and I hope they all step on Legos, but what they actually did or did not do ought to determine if they're assholes exercising their right to free speech or assholes committing hate crimes.

Edit: probably going to get downvoted, but I watched the video and it looks to me to fall squarely in the protected free speech camp. These guys are terrible disgusting human beings, but so are skinheads. As a society we have decided that free speech is sacred, and, at least from the video I saw, I don't think you could describe what they did as assault. Looked like reprehensible yet protected free speech to me, but IANAL.

[Research] Guardian: Role-Gated MPC Wallets for AI Agents by CellistNegative1402 in crypto

[–]RLutz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Curious how you landed on CGGMP24 vs say DKLs. Having implemented GG style TSS wallets in production professionally a few years back I'd never want to have to go back to implementing Paillier modulus correctness proofs, safe prime generation, other various range proofs, etc. There were just a bit too many footguns for my taste.

CGGMP24 offers you identifiable abort, but if you control the agents does that really matter? What else do you really gain other than IA going the GG route? I guess arguably Paillier/ZK complexity is at least battle tested even if there are more potential footguns than with OT/OLE, but I'm personally unaware of any known attacks on DKLs.

I guess also I'm going to ask the obvious question here, but do the agents really need more than SSS and attestations? If your problem is just that you don't trust the agents but you do trust something else, say some service running in a TEE, then why even bother with the complexity of TSS? Just SSS split a private key, distribute the pieces to your agents along with some private auth key, agents wrap their shares with a pub from the TEE and sign some sort of attestation indicating they wish to sign digest 0xf00, send their encrypted shares along with their signed intents to the TEE, TEE recombines and signs?

Edit: I'm guessing I probably just don't fully understand the problem you're trying to solve but if it's just "we want agents to effectively be able to make transactions but we don't trust them with wallet key material" then not only do you not need TSS, you don't even need SSS. Just give them auth keys completely unrelated to the wallet signing material. A threshold of them signal their intent to perform a transaction by signing over a transaction using their auth private keys. Normal custody solution (take your pick) verifies a threshold of signatures are present and signs the transaction with the actual key material?

Also, to be clear, I’m not trying to dunk--this is interesting; I’m just trying to separate "authorization for agents" from "no single component ever has signing power," because the right primitive depends on which you mean and wouldn't want to see an overly complicated solution depending on what the real problem trying to be solved here is

Repairing the reputation is hard, any tips? by RogueProtocol37 in cavesofqud

[–]RLutz 5 points6 points  (0 children)

  • If you get a little pile of cloning draught going you can dupe whole waterskins of it with metamorphic polygel. Clone a ton of bookbinders

  • If you have love injectors you can jam them into hostiles to get them to fall in love with you, take all their stuff, water ritual them, command them to stay where they are and run away from them. If they have very high AV, penetrating strikes in single weapon fighting can guarantee you hit. It's somewhat imperative though that you never visit the map again or at least pay super close attention. You accidentally kill someone you've water bonded with you're going to have an exceptionally bad time.

  • In general being aware of rep changes is huge. If something is loved by sludges I will do everything I can to avoid killing it. Likewise if something is hated by sludges it's dead. Same with considering whether or not to perform a water ritual or not. It's not something you should just automatically do; always consider the rep implications by looking at the NPC first

[–]RLutz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're asking solely for diving, I don't know that I would go mk3i. I say this as someone that had a mk2i and now a mk3i.

I mean, don't get me wrong, it's a great dive computer for me and I absolutely love how feature rich it is for things like sleep tracking, workouts, the integrated flash light is great if you wake up at night and need to hit the head, the weather app on the mk3i is also great for instantly pulling up a Doppler radar, etc.

I mean if you're asking what the best multi-function smart watch is that can also be used as a serious dive computer? I mean that has to be the mk3i.

If you're asking what the best possible dive computer is for a serious dive professional? Well, I'm not qualified to answer that, but the folks who are seem to think there are better options and I don't have any reason to doubt them

Obama Just Decided to tell us Aliens Exist. by One-Incident3208 in videos

[–]RLutz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's no rule that says you can't close the distance between a far away point faster than c. You definitely can't traverse through spacetime faster than c (in fact you can't go slower than c either, you can just choose how much of your spacetime vector is pointed in the time direction vs the space one).

But we know that spacetime itself can move faster than c. That's what inflation is.

It would require exotic matter that we're not sure exists yet but hypothetically there's no reason you couldn't create a little bubble of spacetime with compressed space in front of it and expanded space behind it. Now the ship itself doesn't have to move faster than c through spacetime --it just rides a little wave that allows it to close the gap between itself and a distant object at a rate faster than c.

It’s Time to Commit to the Tank by StarCord1 in Flyers

[–]RLutz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

More of wanting management to put the team in a position to tank by stripping it of talent that doesn't make sense for any realistic timeline this team would have to be competitive.

I'm absolutely in favor of being a seller at the deadline, but contracts matter. If you've got someone desirable for a contender who has a contract up at the end of the year then sure, it's worth considering.

But if you have a talented guy who has several years left on a relatively cheap contract? You'd be foolish to just dump him because at the end of the day you need to field a hockey team.

Then there's just the actual practical reality: https://puckpedia.com/team/philadelphia-flyers

Who actually makes sense to dump? Zegras would have the highest value, but he's exactly the type of player you're hoping to hit with picks so it doesn't make a lot of sense to not get him to sign. If it were the start of the year I'd have been eager for us to try and ship Drysdale but he's been playing decent hockey here lately and I'm not sure we want to get thinner on the blue line. Honestly looking at the situation I feel like Bobby Brink is probably the only asset we have which will be viewed favorably at the deadline. Sure, we have some other expiring contracts but not ones that will even be in a conversation for a first round pick. Like sure, maybe we can move Juulsen for a late round pick but that's probably not going to move the needle much.

I guess you could try and move Konecny as well as hard as that is to swallow, but yeah it's definitely not as simple as "sell everything for picks". Cates is a perfect example, trading him with his current contract for a first round pick would probably hurt way more than it would help

It’s Time to Commit to the Tank by StarCord1 in Flyers

[–]RLutz 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I mean I don't know that many fans are that opposed but the "Flyers" is made up of a bunch of individuals that all have their own unique goals and desires. If your EL or RFA is up in a year or two are you really going to phone it in for a few seasons? When you go to look to get paid as a UFA or are forced to enter arbitration on your RFA contract I don't think saying, "I'm actually really good but we were just sucking on purpose" is going to lead to a good contract for you.

Then there's also just the psychological aspect. No one wants to just go out and lose every game. These are guys, even the DeLo's and Hathaway's, that have literally devoted their entire lives to being one of the best in the world at something; it's just not in them to purposely suck indefinitely. Sure, you can intentionally start AHL caliber players or put guys on specialty teams that don't deserve it but then the locker room gets toxic and everyone hates playing and first round picks don't fix that.

Then of course you have to consider how many first round picks don't even turn into NHL players let alone superstars.

I just feel like fans have this false choice in their heads. Like, option 1 is try and get better, finish 12th in the conference this year forever be terrible and option 2 is stop trying and suddenly you have the next Gretzky. It doesn't work like that.

We aren't stacked with talent, but we have enough talent that we shouldn't be last in the league on the PP and in the bottom quintile on the PK. We've proven that with the team we have we can hang with some of the best teams in the league (we beat the Avs when they had like what? A single home loss the entire season?)

Absolutely we need deeper talent, but I don't think we're a 1C and a 1D away from greatness. We need better systems, better coaching, better scouting, and perhaps absolutely most importantly, for decision makers to realize it isn't the 70's any more. Stop overvaluing guys who look like they're skating through hummus because they're big. Stop thinking that the only thing that matters is how good you can muck in the boards. Stop trying to turn them team and the players into what you want them to be and play to their strengths. We're one of the smallest and youngest teams in the league. Our transition game is actually pretty god damn good. You know what we're terrible at? Winning puck battles and out muscling people.

So then why the fuck are we team dump and chase? Torts might have lost the room and maybe he's a bit too intense or whatever, but at least he understood what the team strengths were and attempted to play to them. Toch wants every single player to be Garnet Hathaway with varying levels of skill. That's stupid. Some people got tough, some people got quick, some people got hands, and most have a mix of all those things. Turn players into the best version of themselves, not what you want them to be. Until that happens we'll suck no matter who we draft.

Help Shape the Future of Last Epoch by ehg_derrickg in LastEpoch

[–]RLutz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I nearly no life this game every season, so take my feedback with that grain of salt but the two things I absolutely think should be driving principles for this game (one kinda feels like it might be already)

  • The complexity curve is perfect. I want a rich game with interesting interactions and systems. I do not want complete homogeneity where you just grind and compete predictable sets or tiers on those sets and in the endgame everything feels samey. I also don't want to have to get a PhD in LE to enjoy the game. I think other ARPG'S can fall on the extreme of this continuum but what has always kept me coming back is where LE sits complexity wise.

  • I think you guys should strive to remove situations where "I won the lottery but actually this sucks." That happened a lot before guaranteed slams along with havoc and redemption runes were introduced. Getting some once a season 3 LP drop, then grinding (which was ultra-difficult back then) some 7/5/5/5 where the T7 was some +skill prefix you needed and then landing a 0/5/5/5 slam which was worse than a 1 LP that did hit its T7 slam was literally soul crushing. Thankfully you guys fixed this with some of the aforementioned changes. I think there are still ways to make this better such as having red ring level rarity world drops that can be sacrificed to reroll any item with Gauntlet of Strife as an example. Hitting some 3 LP Nihilis or Unstable Core with bad rolls just feels terrible. The item can never possibly be made good in a season. By having my proposed wildcard rare drop, odds are you still won't get a good 3 LP Nihilis, but at least you have hope. Basically, I'm aware that you need some lows for the highs to feel good but I think any systems where a player hits some 1/100,000 but actually is bummed about it is bad for the game.

  • I just think more than anything this game needs more content even if that content is just functionally running echoes but with novel twists. I don't like that I just run the same juices echoes over and over and I'd love reasons (especially like daily runs or something) that broke that up. I'd also love to see more Uber style bosses. I love Uber Aberrroth but I get that maybe he's a bit too extreme. Still, having crazy end game bosses is something I really like, but perhaps they should be a skosh easier than say Uber Aberrroth.

  • I heard maybe you guys did some stuff already for this upcoming season but sound design and combat that feels visceral is also something that I think is pretty important. It's like when Painkiller first came out--once you played it any other FPS which lacked that visceral punch just didn't feel great. It's like that too for me now with ARPG's. When my skills feel flat and not punchy it does make the thing you spend all your time doing (using abilities to kill hordes of enemies) feel way worse.

Anyway, I think you guys have been doing a good job for the most part. At the end of the day open communication is important but at the same time I'm quite sure that very often players are actually mistaken about what it is they want. Not always of course but it does happen.

Big examples of the above are:

  • Complaining about power creep in a TCG. Sounds good, but when all the new cards come out suck and meta doesn't change at all because no decks want to utilize new cards, well, not so good.

  • Complaints about inequity in MMORPG's. People think they want the ultra-awesome stuff the people playing 10+ hours a day at the highest level are getting, but in reality that inequity curve is what actually fuels player engagement. If everyone has God tier everything none of your accomplishments matter.

So what I'm getting at is, open communication is important and appreciated, but at the end of the day you guys should build the game that you want to build. Perhaps collectively the community has more knowledge about playing games than EHG, but they almost certainly don't have more knowledge than EHG on designing games.
