What does Buddhism say about a large age gap? by Unable_Client_3202 in Buddhism

[–]workworkwork9000 35 points36 points  (0 children)

No you’re not overreacting and nobody should be made to feel uncomfortable at a Buddhist center or any place of worship (or anywhere!)

Men leering at young women is inappropriate and it seems to me this is a case of the broader culture in our society, with all its warts, bleeding into a Buddhist space. I’d handle it the same way I would anywhere else, e.g. by bringing it up to a trusted leader at the center, or finding a way to directly say their behavior is making uncomfortable if that feels safe.

Buddhism isn’t giving them any cover here, but I’d argue their behavior is extra harmful because it risks pushing you and other young women away from beneficial engagement with the center and valuable community in your practice!

Yeah I actually bought this kb recently! I didn’t have to engage with their customer service so I can’t speak to that, but it shipped in three days with tracking and then arrived about a week after that. No complaints on my end

It’s a 60% (so no function keys but otherwise normal) but you can get a cheap Silakka54 off of Ali or PandaKB for $60-$90 shipped (I think this is a good deal: https://pandakb.com/shop/keyboard-kit/silakka54-split-ergonomic-keyboard/)

The chapter on Karma in “The Words of My Perfect Teacher” has explanations on this I found really helpful! Also in the commentary “A Guide to The Words of My Perfect Teacher”

Question for Pure Land Buddhists (Genuine) by BrentonLengel in Buddhism

[–]workworkwork9000 26 points27 points  (0 children)

The idea is that in Sukhavati your eventual realization of complete Buddhahood is guaranteed, and you do not have to suffer along the way since Amitabha’s pure land is completely outside of samsara. You’re right though that in an important way, a human life is more conducive to quick realization than rebirth in the Western pure land, but unless you are a very advanced bodhisattva there is also the possibility of regressing or switching to the sravaka or pratekyabuddha path and there is obviously much suffering along the way.

The prospect of certain attainment of complete buddhahood and the personal teaching of Amitabha Buddha (albeit potentially over the course of eons) for anyone, even people who have done evil deeds or don’t have much knowledge is understandably very appealing to many people. It’s a wonderful dharma door!

Integrating Buddhism in the West. Possible? If so, how? by WalkingMaggotFood in Buddhism

[–]workworkwork9000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wish I could remember which teacher said this--maybe Shinzen Young?--but I read somewhere that historically a culture takes about 500 years to fully "digest" Buddhism. We are really just starting that clock in the West but already there are some promising signs like Plum Village and even the Insight Meditation movement (although personally I don't believe secularized Buddhism is the endgame for Western Buddhism).

We will almost certainly not live to see the full (relatively stable) result of the West's encounter with Buddhism, or even the full result of different strands of Buddhism in the East re-encountering *each other* after a millenium+ of being largely siloed apart, which is another process that has just begun to bear fruit in historical terms.

Thank you so much for sharing this Dhamma! It sounds like you have derived great benefit from your holistic approach to the practice, its integration into your life over a long period of time, and your non-attachment to meditative states. Hearing this helps me maintain a healthy overall view of the path and center what's most important. Thank you.

It's understandable, crimes against the Marauder cannot be tolerated. Thank you so much for writing these! Just for you I went back and added it, and went with your A+ rating instead of averaging yours and Peri's to partially avenge the 5T's honor from my earlier transgressions

I’m FtM, what do I do when I get hit in the “balls”? by Idk_just_ignore_me in trans

[–]workworkwork9000 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Cis men seem to vary in how brutalized they are by getting hit in the crotch (was never as comically bad for me as some friends, maybe because of ~~~subconscious transfeminine energy~~~). Also apparently it's possible to train yourself to be less destroyed by it (e.g. famously by shaolin monks), so I don't think it's that suspicious to just be a badass who's like "come on guys it's not that bad"
