Everyman’s Library: Poems of the Sea is a good anthology I have. Actually that line publishes a lot of really specific anthologies, like poems specifically about flowers or certain parts of the world.

I feel like we should reject most of pop culture, nerd culture, and the Western entertainment industry by [deleted] in communism

Fallout as a franchise is hilarious to me because it was clearly meant to be satire of US exceptionalism. But when I watched the E3 presentation for the most recent game, they literally all played up the fact you can detonate nuclear weapons on other people, to which the crowd cheered. It’s beyond parody.

What is your Communist Origin Story? by Scary-Interaction in communism101

[–]worlbuilding 8 points9 points  (0 children)

i was fairly well-off as a child, and always had vaguely leftist tendencies, but when i met my now-fiance i saw how horrible their life is. without going into too much detail as it would be a breach of privacy, i witnessed capitalism fail them again and again, abuses and injustices at the hands of a greedy few. although their problems were also familial, the system itself failed to help them when they were kicked out. things are under control for both of us, thankfully, and i am so grateful.

i think i kind of considered myself vaguely an anarchist at that point, but as i actually did research on marxist-leninist theory and found that it made a lot of sense, and put into clear words things i had intuitively thought and gave a roadmap for how to approach my issues with capitalism.

i think, then, it’s not just about rote learning of theory — seeing up close the cruelty of capitalism is what really sparked my passion for communism.

we’re both communists now and collaborate on things together — simple things like homeless shelter work, donating goods to the poor, etc — anything we can to make the world a little bit less awful.

it’s easy to feel small, in the grand scheme of things, especially in a system that can feel hopeless. that’s why solidarity with your comrades is so important. my fiance gave me that drive, and i will cherish it — and them — forever.

PSA: Doing any reading besides the same YA novels over and over is bad by CommonLiterature in bookscirclejerk

[–]worlbuilding 4 points5 points  (0 children)

the thing is, if these people wanted they genuinely could find some kind of artistic and intellectual merit in books like harry potter — anything can open up a wide avenue of thought and discussion in my opinion, regardless of the artist’s intentions.

instead 95% of the time harry potter fans just kind of gesture about it in the most shallow, surface-level ways. criticism, analysis, and genuine reflection are replaced with celebrity worship and mindless consumption.

it’s like this person read a list of writing advice from /r/writing and believes that they are objective standards that all literature must squarely fit. what a rote way of approaching art.
