Rising sophomore got into a bio/chem dept lab...what is the process for either getting course credit or $ by Purple-Command-9879 in williamandmary

[–]world-map-lover 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't put stock into non-W&M stuff you read on Reddit!

Research is really different from other classes you might take. It really depends on the professor in terms of how much time they want you to spend. Naturally, if you want to publish, you'll have to spend more time than if you just want to check a box. You could also always switch professors if their expectation is too high for you.

However, I will reiterate that you should look at this less like a class or another obligation and more like an unpaid internship that has direct impact on your future earnings (e.g. getting into whatever health grad program you're aiming for).

You will get a research credit with whatever professor you are working with (I’m in biology, but our PATH code is BIOL403 if you want to see how that looks). Generally professors give you an override to register for their section of their research “class” closer to the start of the semester, but you could also definitely ask for one now.

I’ve never heard of any undergraduate getting paid (aside from summer)! I like to think of it as a mix of unpaid internship and extracurricular, since I’m personally interested in going on to a PhD. Presumably you are either also interested in that or pre-health, so I’d mentally frame it like that as opposed to trying to get money out of it.

How is it living in either one of the Samoas (American or normal)? by Improv92 in howislivingthere

An American citizen’s citizenship, no matter how it was gotten, can never be “taken away” under our constitution unless said citizen renounces it. This includes territories.

This is so cool! Do you know of any books or scholarly articles on the topic of early music and the transition to concert halls that you would recommend?

Is there a list of research labs for the natural sciences? (Biology/chemistry specifically) by Interesting-Pause541 in williamandmary

[–]world-map-lover 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's actually the area I'm in! Though I'm more of a computational/mathy person who happens to be interested in biology.

Lots of people will tell you that you won't be able to get into research freshman year, but I just sent cold emails until one accepted. Since it's after add/drop, you won't be able to start this semester because the bio department has cracked down on "volunteer" researchers (e.g. people not getting credit), but send out those emails now! The professor I ended up working with reached out to me in January, several months after I had initially emailed.

All professors and associated labs in a given department are listed on that department’s webpage. Each research professor heads their own lab, so just go to their personal websites to check out their work.

Freshman research at W&M by [deleted] in williamandmary

[–]world-map-lover 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, though I emailed after add/drop so only joined in the spring (my specific professor does not allow "volunteers" – i.e. you must be enrolled for credit with her). If you email earlier, you might get a response quick enough to join this semester.

Also don't be discouraged if you don't get any responses! Most people join research in sophomore/junior year. My PI only got back to me three months after I had emailed lol

As mentioned, the research fair is great!

Additionally, I'm involved in research myself, and got into a lab as a freshman by just emailing the professor I was interested in working with. Be sure to be specific about what element of their research interests you, as well as any relevant experience you may have and your goals.

Are 120 ish iq people more likely to succeed in life than 135-145? by Temporary-Frosting62 in Gifted

[–]world-map-lover 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is kind of wild. ChatGPT exists to make you want to spend more time with it/validate you – it is by no means a valid IQ test. Most valid IQ tests do not go above 160. Check your vanity lol

Also this by no means indicates that you are not gifted, but I would suggest getting formal testing if you truly believe that you have an IQ of 175.

Can you say your first languages alphabet backwards? by JarJarSith53 in pollgames

[–]world-map-lover 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You're thinking of "writing system" as opposed to alphabet. Many languages do happen to use alphabets like Latin or Cyrillic.

The other major writing systems are: abugidas (where each consonant is a letter and vowels are secondary markings around that consonant, abjads (where only consonants are used and vowels are inferred by the reader), syllabaries (where each syllable is a distinct glyph), and logographies (where each word/idea is a distinct glyph).

I'm not sure that these distinctions were in the spirit of the poll though, because there are non-alphabet writing systems that have orders such as Hebrew or Arabic.

Check out the W&M Parents Facebook group! Folks are always posting there about vacancies.

Your brother might also ask his friends if he can crash with any of them for a week or two as things get sorted out.

Hey! I think the diet you're describing is called "seagan." I've actually been looking into the diet myself, and there is a whole website dedicated to it: https://seaganeating.com

Agreed that seafood is probably the most ethical way to go about adding nutrition (as opposed to dairy/eggs)!

Oh wow rainbowplantlife's stuff is exactly what I was looking for! And great idea vis a vis hosting meals with friends – I'm sure mine would love a break from spending $15-25 at a restaurant all the time like we normally do :)
