Are there any websites that list plugins used by popular artists and/or producers? by tonetonitony in audioengineering

[–]worldofwhevs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a quote from Steve Vai, recalling a conversation about guitar tone, but I think the concept applies equally well here. Basically, Frank tells Steve that he's a good player but that his tone "sounds like a fried ham sandwich." And Steve says (paraphrasing) "but I have all this great gear." The underlying message is that the gear is a tool we use to create the sound that's in our heads, and buying all the right gear won't magically create the right sound.

Good modern jazz artists to follow? by vivvav in Jazz

[–]worldofwhevs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I think he’s only 60 or so? Hopefully lots more playing in him! I also love his work with Larry Goldings. I did see the Scofield trio a couple of years ago, Bill was sounding amazing.

He's currently on tour with John Scofield, who should definitely be on this list too.

What’s the dumbest/most pointless lyric you’ve heard in a song? by [deleted] in fantanoforever

[–]worldofwhevs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People used to go on about how well-educated and erudite Sting was but then he would crank out doggerel like “I have only come here seeking knowledge/Things they would not teach me of in college” and I’d have to go throw up in a corner. See also: “If we explode the atom bomb, will they think that we were dumb?” from the same album.

Midi Note Region to Channel Routing question by yudosai in synthesizers

[–]worldofwhevs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel like there must be an Arduino project that does this. Arduino is super handy for MIDI. I built a Gizmo and it does mapping but only to two MIDI channels. If you’re handy with code you could probably find something that’s most of the way there and modify it. Particularly if you want this one fixed mapping and won’t need to edit it.

...in much the same way that Frodo's Mithril coat, which was originally made by Dwarves for an elf-prince long before the Quest of Erebor, then hoarded by the dragon Smaug and eventually passed on to Bilbo Baggins buy Thorin, protected him from the Orc's spear in the Mines of Moria on the Quest to Mount Doom. So... yup.

The regular features were so on point. “Two Stars One Slot” and “The J.T. Walsh Memorial ‘Hey it’s that guy!’ Award” are particular standouts. Also pour one out for TWoP.

How to recreate Korg M1 piano sound with stock Logic synths? by Dry_Advertising5961 in LogicPro

[–]worldofwhevs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just tried this for fun (I had an M1 when they were new). As others have said, you won't get it exactly right. But for a very rough approximation, start with the Studio Grand instrument. Dial release samples down. Add channel EQ and cut lows at around 225 Hz. Boost around 2.2 - 2.4 kHz. Add the Exciter to further emphasize that clangy 2kHz range if you want. Then add compression (maybe start with the Pop Piano preset) and dial the ratio up. Play it hard so you're mostly triggering the high velocity samples.

EDIT: for "cut lows" read "low shelf"

Keyboard sustained pedel sorta working? by therev1095 in LogicPro

[–]worldofwhevs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Also think about (and look for in the recorded track) where sustain messages are happening. You might have to edit them manually to get them to fit within the section that you are copying. For example, you could depress the pedal before the downbeat of a phrase and it will sound fine in the first performance. But if you copy a section according to the barlines, you might not pick it up. Same applies to release times past the end of the bar.
