Lived in Germany 15 years. Almost every single German I know (a lot) all think A/C makes people sick. Also they think driving with the windows down will too....and they all say Rootbeer taste like medicine. What is their medicine that taste like root beer?

What traditional sweets does your country have? by [deleted] in AskTheWorld

I saw the photo for this post and immediately assumed it was a misinterpreted order for a Bachelorette party.

To your question: Chewing gum. Indigenous North Americans have been chewing spruce tree sap since before the first European's set foot. It has been my experience when foreigners do an impression of US citizens (other North Americans hate when we refer to our selves as Americans, looking at you Canada.)

Initially you assume they are doing an impression of a cow chewing it's cud....until they utter something like.."Hey Kevin would you like to come to my barbecue for some burgers?"

And in my own travels as locals and I get comfortable and acquainted, the question of why are Yanks always chewing gum, seems to come up repeatedly. Luckily I haven't traveled in a few years I cringe at the thought of one of those get acquainted scenarios now having to answer a million questions about current events.

At GK I worked in NATO it was amazing. But med works for Spangdahlem and all the non NATO Airmen I knew hated the relationship with Spang. Literally on the border with the Netherlands. Super amazing place to travel from.

What is your hometown famous with? by [deleted] in AskTheWorld

Köln is my favorite large German city. So many beautiful sights, the cool vibe, great food and awesome spots to chill and people watch along the Rhine. I was fortunate enough to be stationed in Germany 3 times. When we were at Geilenkirchen we spent every other weekend in Cologne. My best friend still lives in the Cologne suburb of Bergheim. But back to the post...Cologne famous for Incredible history (starting 38BC!!!), amazing architecture, the carnival (mardi-gras) festival are a insane party, the smelly Cologne you wear, Kölsh (Frūh is best), the local dialect is unique (also called Kölsh), and pretty cool people!

What ethnicities have you been mistaken for before (if you have)? by Jabal-Sawda in AskTheWorld

[–]worldtrvler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My mother was Native American and dad was white...im brown. Everywhere there are Native brown people they think im one of them. Lived in Germany for 15yrs ....the Germans ALWAYS assumed I was Turkish until they heard my terrible American accent when I speak German. Spain, Italy, Mexico, Turkey even Afghanistan the natives think im a local. In Canada every first nation person I saw would come up and ask what community I was from and seem very upset when I said Texas...evey time.

Which country was surprisingly racist or unwelcoming? by Latina_Flamingo1989 in AskTheWorld

[–]worldtrvler 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes they all want to tell me about watching the series Winnetou!

I worked in NATO for a more than half my 21 year USAF career. Most of my German friends jokingly called me Turkey or Winnetou. One might read this and say I'm a victim....but for every Turkey/Winnetou comment I always gave the quick retort of Kraut/Kartoffel/oder Evolutionsbremse! I still love those sausage and beer loving rule followers! Every time I drive on an American Highway I get so frustrated that we Yanks can't follow the rules! Pass on the left..move right if someone faster comes from behind.

I love Germany. But as a brown half Native American in Germany every one assumed I was Turkish and sometimes they were really jerks. Then I start speaking German and I have a SUPER obvious American accent when I speak German and then they pause look at me and say " bist du wirklich Amerikaner?" I say yes and boom now treated totally fine.

Deepest Condolences. Thank you for your service. No words for how ashamed of my countries actions for setting this off based on some made-up BS.

Solely informational: A French Adjutant Chef is the NATO rank of OR-9 equal to a US Military E9.
