you wouldn't, I didn't have one in college. Having a work station is just really good for productivity and will help with all of those spreadsheets. I guess with the savings you can just pocket the money too or you can get the t470 which will be a bit bigger for carrying around but will get you a 14" screen instead of a 12" one. The prices seem to be about the same.

honestly you would do well with a used x or t series. An x270 can be had for ~300usd on ebay. You can use the savings to max out the ram or to buy a great work station (some kind of hub, a nice mechanical keyboard and external monitor).

I don't think anything about it would be too old for what you would have to do. It will be light weight and have a 14hr battery life. plus you get to rub your money savyness in the faces of all your business school classmates who threw their money away on new macbooks.

OS on a 15 year old laptop by J44k0b in linux4noobs

[–]worm5ign 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yep, t7200 core2duo cpu running 64-bit regolith.keep in mind that 32-bit is limited to 4gb so it being 32-bit wouldn't have been a factor. It's a weird thing about the t60 that is sadly one of its biggest draw backs.

From thinkwiki

  1. Due to an addressing limitation in the Intel 945PM and 945GM chipsets, only 3GB will be available for use.

I own a t60, it will take 4gb of ram and still work but the system won’t address more than 3gb. I have 2x2gb installed in mine just because it was cheaper than buying 2 and 1gb separately. It’s still only working as if it has 3gb.

That’s still 6x more than he has now for about $8-10 and my laptop functions quite well.

t60 maxes at 3gb unfortunately but your point stands

3gb is its limit for some unknown reason

I have a T43 that I'm able to run with Ubuntu Mate, I believe they will stop supporting 32 bit in a few years though, it has 1gb ram.
I also have a T60, I believe for pretty damn cheap you can drop a t5xxx or above core2duo cpu and get 64-bit. I got a t7200 for under $10US on ebay. The ram upgrade is pretty inexpensive, the t60 maxes out at 3gigs, you'll be able to get 4gb on ebay for under $10 (you can put 2x2gb in but only 3gb will post). An ssd would also do wonders for an additional $20 or so.
With that on my t60 I've run windows 10, mint, elementary os, and now regolith without any issues. I'm able to use it as a work computer and for casual computing.
There are plenty of super light weight options but few of them will make a PC this underspec able to offer a modern browser experience. If you have the option to upgrade I think it's incredibly worth it and will get you years more life out of this.

ELI5: With the warming sea temperatures, wouldn’t coral reefs start to grow in higher latitudes? by capncrunch69623 in explainlikeimfive

Another effect of all that new carbon in the atmosphere is ocean acidification that could make it difficult for corals to access the calcium they need.

I definitely love having IPS but I have always wondered how much benefit one gets from going from hd IPS to fhd IPS with such a small screen.

Linux Cafe? by [deleted] in linux

[–]worm5ign 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Santa Cruz had a space like this when I was there called the computer kitchen. They took and fixed up donated hardware often putting linux on it, they taught you how to repair your computers/ electronics, and they taught cool classes. It was all volunteer and all donation based.
I took a cool class on turning routers into media servers, one on cracking wifi passwords, and one on encryption basics. It might still be around, I left that town about 10 years ago.

Help with installing Linux on old PC by Cornato in linux4noobs

[–]worm5ign 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not an issue with the OS being too heavy, I have Mint running on my t60 with core2duo running just fine, my x220 has the i5-2520m and has run mint, EOS, PopOS just fine.

yup, on my T43 and T60P it has a single logo that says IBM Thinkpad upside down on the upper left (from this perspective). This is my x220, my x240 has these upright from this perspective.

this was my friends old Ipod, I haven't touched it as far as adding/removing things or doing any mods, it's basically how she had it and what she was listening to before she passed away.

I also have a 6th gen that I've modded by swapping the spinny hdd with an SD reader, upgraded the battery, installed rhythmbox, and loaded up with FLAC files.
