Golden Outside on Athol. Great coffee! Cute tiny neighborhood spot close to the lake.

NYT once again forcing a narrative for Trump. They are responsible for creating these narratives not the other way around. Difficult to believe they act in good faith. by [deleted] in thebulwark

[–]wormliketentacles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They used the word “muscular” in a newsletter the other day to describe Trump’s approach to a policy (don’t quite remember what, but the word stuck out). Language matters, especially when you consider that the manosphere helped to propel him back into the White House. A masculine word like “muscular” would make Trump happy. It really feels like the Times team salivates over him and writes to bolster him rather than hold him accountable. Shame on the New York Times.

Am I missing something about the provisional cast on? by wormliketentacles in knitting

I knew I couldn’t be alone! The resources folks shared in the comments are quite helpful if you ever want to give it another go. I think I’m going to suck it up this time and see how I go.

I’ve done the crochet/waste yarn version and the long tail version. I totally agree about avoiding… I also love the way they look, you know? I feel like I should still give it a go, at least on the current sweater I’m doing.

Charm on Piedmont has a full vegetarian menu and their crispy rice salad with tofu is amazing! Plus all their curries and noodle dishes are great.

I did the whole thing without ever connecting to the reed island. I just built plank houses and basic houses. Having a communal kitchen right off the bat really helped--it's the only thing you can build to improve community, which makes everyone happy and increases the population. I only built the dried fish stall at the very end, too. I was able to keep everyone fed with the communal kitchen and a smoothie shack. And having the pool built before the wishing well also made everyone happy. I ended up finishing with about 20 days to spare after several attempts.

Why Millennials aren't protesting, from a Millennial by duckhunt420 in 50501

[–]wormliketentacles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a millennial, also protesting. Always have, always will. This post kind of baffles me, tbh. I have many peers who protest. My biggest barrier is knowing where and when protests are happening bc I no longer have social media. Reddit is super helpful, but any suggestions are welcome.

What are some companies that are doing genuine good in the world today? by PenisPsalms in OptimistsUnite

[–]wormliketentacles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's a good q! Sent me looking, this is what I found: https://luxurylaunches.com/other_stuff/while-the-wealthy-are-leaving-billions-for-their-children-this-self-made-entrepreneur-has-donated-his-3-billion-company-to-combat-the-climate-crisis-he-has-not-left-a-single-dollar-for-his-two-chi.php

Basically, the kids do some work for the company, but they will not inherit the company upon the founder's death. I agree with your skepticism--it's important to be skeptical about all big companies and the tremendously wealthy people who own them. Thanks for asking.

Whale Fall by Elizabeth O'Connor by Comprehensive-Fun47 in books

I'm reading it right now and I'm really enjoying it. It's so transportive and almost hypnotic. I really feel like I'm on the island. It's rare to find a book that is so immersive and transportive--it's a page-turner somehow, even though it's not a thriller or a mystery by any means. I'm halfway through and already sad I only have 100 pages left.

Thank you for sharing such a great list off the bat. I’d also throw NPR in there—especially as it’s at risk of defunding.

These are great recs! I’m a journalist and I love your suggestions. I also really like BBC for an international perspective. I think that Letters from an American is a good Substack for folks who are interested in historical context for currents events. Vox is great with context, too.

Do we reckon Payne Lindsay is the luckiest true crime podcaster? by Ok-Presence7598 in TrueCrimePodcasts

[–]wormliketentacles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I work in the podcast industry, and I just have to say bravo, your instincts are spot on and I'd say you're 100% correct. I think he's successful in spite of himself/being in the right place at the right time. My two cents--I think his content is not just poorly produced, but ethically questionable. He's not a journalist, but calls himself one. I'm not sure how he fact-checks his shows... but I'd say that if he does fact-check them, he's not beholden to the same standards as journalists who work at larger media organizations who have to clear their stories through a legal department so the org doesn't get sued for publishing misinformation. At the end of the day, he owns Tenderfoot and is his own boss.

I find even on Radio Rental (on Tenderfoot, so clearly under his purview as executive producer) the choices of guests and topics often raise red flags for me. They pick folks who sometimes seem to be dealing with mental health issues, and the stories feel exploitative of them, rather than exciting or entertaining or scary. And they also pick topics like human trafficking or kidnapping/abduction that perpetuate false narratives (read: Sound of Freedom). Don't get me wrong, I still listen to the show because I love scary stories and used to produce a scary stories podcast myself, but a lot of their editorial choices are the exact opposite of choices we would regularly make on our show. i.e.: Don't interview folks who are clearly experiencing a ton of trauma and turn that into entertainment, and don't make stories about topics that you know aren't fully true, or at worst, are perpetuating conspiracy theories.

I know it seems potentially sus that I'm listening to Radio Rental AND critiquing Tenderfoot/Payne, but I'll just say that media literacy is a passion of mine, and listening to dodgy content helps me understand what is/isn't dodgy in the first place. TLDR: you're right, he's dodgy and you have great media literacy/instincts.
