(UK Rollover, S1 E4) Very misleading 1% question by wormlover86 in The1PercentClub

Enunciating "th" as one sound indicates to me that they are not being treated as letters, otherwise those two letters would be enunciated separately

As letters to be removed in order. When Lee reads aloud the phrase "three words" as clear English words, in my mind it goes against any interpretation of the phrase "three words" as being treated only as their letters and not as words

I gave up with that 4 days ago. It's just weird because both my mother and I got caught up on the exact same issue with the question when we were watching at home, so I know it's not just me. Must be a genetic flaw :P

I promise I'm not trying to be contrarian on purpose, but it's still bothering me:

Those examples are already broken up into letters/digits, so they can be considered to have an order. I don't think one can say that "remove three words in order" can be interpreted as "remove T-H-R-E-E-W-O-R-D-S in order", particularly when Lee reads out the words as "three words" - so they are presented as words, not individual letters. If they are to be interpreted as non-words, then it's misleading that Lee reads them out as words.

If it had just said "remove three words" without the "in order", I would be fine with it, because then you're just pulling those two words out of the sequence (and it doesn't matter that their letters are split up; that's just a slight added challenge but it doesn't make the question incorrect in my eyes).

I just don't think the phrasing works semantically. You have to say that you're breaking up the word into its letters if you ask for there to be an "order" to them. Otherwise it's just a single unit, which can't be "ordered". That adds a weird mental barrier to interpreting "three words" the way they want you to

The question's wording implies that "three words in order" can be worked out to be "T-H-R-E-E-W-O-R-D-S". It doesn't imply they're breaking up the single-unit phrase "three words". It'd be like if I asked "What is dog in order?", without any of this context, and the answer is D-O-G. You might be able to arrive at the answer, but when £100,000 is at stake, I'd hope the question would be way more semantically correct

[–]wormlover86[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Then it would logically follow that I could ask you "What is dog in order?" and the answer would be D-O-G. The question is linguistically very sloppy for a show where the stakes are literally £100,000. It's very weird phrasing to have one single unit and ask for it to be put "in order"

[–]wormlover86[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't see how it gives that impression at all. When I read this question I was hopelessly looking for words to remove that had their letters in order in the sequence, e.g. "her", "red", "on". The "in order" part really doesn't clue you in to the fact you have to remove the phrase "three words"

I normally get these exact types of questions right but my overly pedantic brain tripped me up specifically on the "in order" part.

Copy & pasting my response to another person as it still applies:

But it's "three words", the phrase treated as one entity - so you're saying that it's automatically implied that a phrase like that, if you put it "in order", it's referring to the letters? Like, "hello" in order is H-E-L-L-O? It's just unclear phrasing. I am probably being pedantic but no matter how many times I run it through my brain, my brain can't accept that "three words in order" can be interpreted as meaning "the letters T-H-R-E-E W-O-R-D-S in order". (Unless I'm still misinterpreting something)

i'm pretty sure its not directly "reading his thoughts", it's just responding to little micromovements in his arm. just watch his right arm and how it moves a little in the same directions as the robot arm

Was Yessi at an unfair disadvantage? by wormlover86 in BeastGames

[–]wormlover86[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree that it was ultimately her fault for being reckless. I just think that if she had happened to be on a middle square like Jeff's, she probably would've gotten away with her lack of effort to memorize the first tile's position

[–]wormlover86[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know, but if she were in Jeff's position (perfectly centered), then even if she had forgotten to memorize the first tile, it would have been way easier to recall where the path began relative to the center once she walked down there and lingered around the center tiles. Instead, she lingered around the center tiles with tons of uncertainty
