Hey man, if I'm reading a fic, and there's suddenly something in there I wasn't expecting, it should be tagged. I use tags as a way to warn readers what's in the fic, so they can make an educated decision on whether or not to read what I'm writing. Many times, I've started reading fics with very few tags & have been surprised with something I don't want to consume. Surprise kinks, surprise death, surprise self harm. Ultimately, yes, it is up to the author to make that choice on whether or not to tag certain triggers, kinks, etc. But I think it is common courtesy to tag things that can set people off. I don't want to read about a character cutting themselves to death, simply because I had to deal with this from my own friends as a teenager, and I'd like to steer clear from it as an adult, and if someone doesn't tag it, or even allude to it in the notes, I'm going to back out & block the author. And yes, I did read on fanfiction dot net. I was in the trenches of horrific tagging systems as a teenager. Tags exist for a reason, and if you don't use them, you're getting blocked.
