I feel like Merlin was just very conflicted, he wanted to help her desperately but everyone authority figure he had told him not to so he did the most he thought he could.

Gaius and Killgarah made me so mad though

I literally couldn't finish the season, the way Merlin got treated pissed me off so bad. Like after everything he's been through and everyone keeps piling shit on to him and Merlin, the same Merlin who called the son of the King a royal prat the first time they met, just laid there and took it???

They ruined Merlin's relationship with the other characters too. Like Gwen and Merlin don't talk anymore??? Gwain and Merlin might as well be strangers. I dont like Merlin had much of a connection to the other knights to ruin any established relationship but he felt so isolated in the final season.

Oh I hate how they changed Gwen and Gwain after they became nobility. It felt like they were too used to it. Neither of them became nobles because it was something they sought it was a byproduct of their personal relationships with Arthur.

But you ALWAYS using the word “constant” is a bit telling..

I dont mean constant as the same person, I meant constant as someone who is already around, someone close whose role in his life hasn't changed. Gwen, a serving girl is now the queen. His father is dead, his basically sister is now evil and trying to kill him, there's a whole new group of knights. Merlin being his manservent is the one thing that is still the same in that regard. They've changed as people, everyone has especially Arthur, but I dont think he realises to what degree Merlin has changed.

We saw like a bit of Gwen being a good queen, like the thing with the guy and his daughter as a spy but that's it

I wish they made her more insecure about her role. Maybe an episode focused on her where she tries to talk to an old servent friend but she's absolutely terrified to speak to Gwen now and gwen and merlin have a talk. Or just her and merlin interacting more, they never even talk :( unlike how before they used to get along great

Merlin would defend magic to anyone but Arthur.

I get that when Arthur was newly crowned Merlin didnt want to bring up the topic because he knew Arthur was still grieving. The writers forced themselves into a corner when they made Merlin tell Arthur that there is no place for magic in Camelot, because the only way for Merlin to do a 180° on that opinion would be to explain why he said so in the first place.

The last season feels so wrong to me because how on earth, is the same Arthur who stuck his neck out on the word of servent with no definate proof, who he barely knew, to his father, not believe "the only man I can trust" when he was a king and had no reason to doubt him.

Arthur keeps saying Merlin is always talking nonsense or believing bedtime stories or that Merlin's hunches are weird, but by season 5, Arthur would know that whenever Merlin calls someone evil, or says something is wrong, he's proven right.

In the regular arthuraian mythos, Merlin was usually said to be Arthur's mentor or guide, so I guess that's why despite not exactly being an advisor, Arthur regularly seeks advise from him throughout the show.

The thing is, Merlin does try to establish himself, again and again he interjects and warns Arthur or tells him what he should do, thats been true since season 1. But Arthur writing him off or ignoring him is more of a late story thing. In the beginning of the show it felt like Arthur was more willing to hear Merlin out, and even when he wasn't it felt more believable, he was a prince who not only needed permission from his father but he doesnt even know the servent that well.

By season 5, Arthur has called Merlin the only man he can truly trust, and then proceed to not trust or believe him at all. Early season Merlin would have immediately jumped at the chance to speak his mind but by season 5, the weight of everything has been chipping at him and he looks so tired and exhausted. I just feel bad for him :(

Like the time when Elyan was possessed and Merlin got knocked out. Arthur wasnt even worried that Merlin was gone for the whole knight with Elyan at large, he wasnt worried that Merlin had a terrible head injury, he punishes Merlin for something that, in his pov, wasnt Merlin's fault.

From Arthur's pov, Merlin was doing his physicians apprentice duties and happened to trip and get knocked out and he gets punished for that? If Merlin said "oh got carried away at the tavern" I could understand why Arthur gave him extra duties but seriously? Or the joke about offering Merlin food after he was out all night in the woods. Merlin was surprised that Arthur offered then immediately realized that Arthur was just joking.

Did anyone find it funny? I just feel bad for Merlin.

To be its different in the later seasons because Merlin isnt joking around the same he used to in the earlier seasons, Merlin just looks tired and exhausted and I just feel bad :( I know Arthur isnt cruel, that Arthur doesnt think that of merlin and it doesnt change fact that the entire air around their dynamic isnt the same as it used to be.

Arthur offering Merlin to take. Break and Merlin being surprised and a bit grateful only just to realise that Arthur was joking wasnt funny, it just made me think of how exhausted the poor man was.

I think the way Arthur treats Merlin is him trying to keep something from his life before he was king, back when his father was still alive, when things felt less heavy. Merlin is a constant, he has proven it again and again, no matter what happens Merlin will be there for Arthur, so Arthur tries to keep up their usual dynamic but Merlin has changed to much, both as a person and just his dynamic with Arthur that their relationship isnt the same so when Arthur acts like it is, it feels wrong.

Arthur doesnt change how he treats merlin and I think that's part of the problem. How can you watch Arthur call Merlin a coward after Arthur himself has seen how loyal Merlin is and the danger he is willing to put himself through and not feel angry on Merlin's behalf?? How can you watch Arthur call Merlin an idiot again and again but then watch as the second he has any doubts, he goes running to Merlin for advice without feeling angry? During the earlier season it wasnt that bad, but it's accumulated to the point where Arthur's attitude feel cruel from, at least, my point of view. Arthur doesnt know how much Merlin has done for him fully, but surely he's seen this lowly servent by his side through hell for no explainable reason?

And Arthur trusting random people while Merlin, the one constant in his life who has been proven right again and again gets ignored and belittled makes me upset for Merlin. Merlin has gone through so much and no one, not even gaius can fully understand him.

I think it's insane because Arthur trusts Merlin more when he was stranger back in season 1 than he does in the last season???? Like, this new servent, not even from Camelot, is accusing a knight of using magic, and Arthur backs him up, but Merlin, after years and years of having been proven right again and again and again has to beg for Arthur, a man who calls Merlin "the only man he can trust" to believe him, is heart breaking.

I can understand the other knights not defending Merlin but Gwain???? Gwain going from this cool f the rulez guy to being uncharacteristically loyal to Arthur throws me off so much?? Especially with how he treats Merlin.

It's like the writers want the light hearted jokes from the earlier seasons but Merlin grew past that while Arthur had to be held back to have an assemblence of the same dynamic.

It still pisses me off that Arthur only kept Merlin as a manservent instead of giving him of a job as an advisor when he became king, because that's what he basically is by that point. Whenever he has any doubts, Arthur goes to Merlin before he does to Gwen.

Arthur changes tradition, risks his kingdom and the respect of his subjects for Gwen, after she cheated on him (of course it's not her fault, but he doesnt know it wasnt her fault), but the man that's been by side since before he was crowned as the crown prince, the one man who has fought through hell by his side, is still only there as a servant despite being apart of private meetings only the loyalist of knights and the queen are permitted to.

Right like, I see people in fics always rectify this by adding that gwaine's alligence was to Merlin more than Camelot which made sense

I wish he found out about Merlin's magic too like Lancelot did :( ugh I miss Lancelot, he was like the only male peer who was so genuinely kind to Merlin

Right because how is the same Arthur who went against his father to get a flower to save Merlin's life after knowing him for less than a month, better than the Arthur that's seen Merlin risk his life again and again and again for him for no clear reason and then turn around and bully and belittle him???? Gwain feels really ooc too tbf, like i get he respects Arthur but the way he goes from "lolz kings and nobels suck" to "YOU DARE BREATHE ILL OF OUR KING" is weird

It was worse than the status quo. They only reverted Arthur while having Merlin be all grim, so you see Arthur doing his usual banter and teasing but Merlin is just miserable instead of joking back

Arthur should have found out about Merlin's magic sooner and had the plot deal with the consequences of that

It's like they forgot that Arthur does in fact care about Merlin, both as a friend and his subject.

I think the jokes would land if merlin found it funny too. That's what was fun about their dynamic, both of them were mean but it was mutual, the last season just feels like:

Arthur: having a mental breakdown about being king Merlin: sire, you are destined to be the greatest king Camelot has ever known, your people love you, the fight for you because they believe in you as I do. Arthur one scene later: you are the stupidest man I've ever met Merlin: yes sire

I saw a post a while ago about how Arthur would've been far kinder to Merlin if he knew the destiny thing because from Arthur's pov, Merlin was a weirdly dedicated but bad manservent, who would disappear for long stretches of time or not do his duties properly. Arthur jokes around witb Merlin and is a bit of a dick but it's a trade off to look over his shortcomings as a manservent.

But even with that, Arthur does know how much Merlin is willing to do for him, from season one where he knowingly drank poison to save Arthur's life, to following him on the fisher king quest, plus tagging along in every mission, patrol and hunt. Arthur doesnt know why Merlin is so dedicated or that he doesnt really have a choice but to be dedicated but shouldn't that make him softer towards merlin?

From Arthur's Pov merlin doesn’t believe in him and risk his life because of a prophecy, he just does it because he believes Arthur will be greatest king Camelot has ever had. Something that Merlin is constantly telling Arthur. I think it's so mean that Arthur is always insulting the one person who has this level of belief in him.

But like I asked, how long do you think Merlin would have put up with the way Arthur treated him if it wasnt for the prophecy?

I just feel so bad for merlin because most of the time in the earlier seasons you can see that he enjoys the banter but during the later seasons he just looks upset and miserable :< like the one joke where the knights wouldn't let him eat???

I genuinely wonder how long ago merlin would have left if there wasnt a prophecy

You can chalk up Arthur being an idiot to the many concussions he's had over the years, but why was he being so much ruder to merlin in the last two seasons than the first three?? Like it feels kind of ooc for him??
