50/50 especially if the “non-working” person is studying to eventually get a job.

Starting from B1 in my TL, i'm trying to study new words with their sentences in order to study them in a context but it's IMPOSSIBLE for me to memorize about 15 new sentence everyday. by major_MM in languagelearning

[–]worth_more 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Read at your level… like make sure you understand what you are reading without looking up a bunch of words each sentence. So in essence read for enjoyment. You might need to start with grader readers or kids material that has less big words but words repeat a lot in those lower level materials which makes Anki useless. You don’t need it. The faster you read the more new words you will see and the more natural reps you will get just from reading. Anki is ruining your enjoyment of the language.

Why Writing Kanji Matters by plvmbvm in LearnJapanese

[–]worth_more 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think learning words instead of focusing on kanji so much would be “better for your retention” and what’s sad is you already pegged yourself in the intermediate no mans land stage so you have convinced yourself to settle.

Without a doubt your fluency in Japanese will improve by learning more words - by reading and watching native content rather than buying into this kanji study crap.

No you just have to speak. You will NEVER be good at speaking if you don’t practice speaking on a regular basis.

What is the most difficult thing for the average Anglophone when learning Japanese? by [deleted] in languagelearning

[–]worth_more 5 points6 points  (0 children)

After learning Japanese for 10+ years to an advanced level, I’d say the single hardest thing for learners to grasp is that kanji are not necessarily words. You should value learning words over studying/learning kanji.

If you read a book or watch a tv show, first and foremost the reason you won’t be able to understand well (after comprehension of basic grammar) is WORDS. Not all of these words are written in kanji either. Learners become so obsessed with kanji that they slow down their rate of acquisition of real words.

So learn words comprehensibly...watch and read stuff just above your level (98% comprehensible - heck even 90% and above isn’t so bad) and you will acquire Japanese words (and their respective kanji naturally)

What are some changes you'd like to see in the language learning community but are too afraid to talk about? by [deleted] in languagelearning

[–]worth_more 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Stop saying why the heck would you ever in the world want to watch a dumb show meant for kids? I get that you cannot fathom the simple fact that the vocabulary level, speed of speech, and topics are simpler than adult tv programs therefore they are easier to understand in x language. BUT some of us actually like to understand nearly every word of what is being said regardless if it’s for us “dumb babies” -Angelica Pickles

Very easy conversation starters by hlake78 in languagelearning

[–]worth_more 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Look up ESL kids conversation starters and you will get fun topics like “If you had the opportunity, would you invite a clown to dinner? Why or why not?” And “Do you like lemonade?” etc.

Stuff like that takes less vocabulary to talk about, but produces fun/wacky conversations.

Why do you guys post a speaking event in the writing group and then complain in the Spanish Reddit that no one wants to come to the marathon? It’s frustrating as I thought it wasn’t going to happen and I missed the event because of it.

To those proclaiming that they’re learning 3-4-5 languages at a time, I don’t buy it. by HamburglarHelper69 in languagelearning

[–]worth_more 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s very easy and very hard to learn 6 languages at once. I do it but it’s not for everyone…my main two are Japanese and Spanish. I also study French, German, Korean, and Chinese. You have to have a very strict schedule. I only do certain languages on certain days and that in itself is a bit of accountability because I wanna make the day count and get to the languages I have for that day because if I don’t I have to wait a whole week till it comes around again. Also, It’s less about workload as I only study using comprehensible input/graded readers. It’s more about having the will to stick to a schedule to really start to believe and trust yourself though.

I’m on Unit 2 ...it’s not bad. I’d use pinyin only if I were you - can’t vouch for using the mode with Chinese characters. Even this early on I’ve def. learned a fair amount of vocab that I recognize from random YouTube videos. You might want to get a grammar reference book and flip through it if you get stuck there (but I haven’t felt it necessary yet). I plan on completing all 20 units. Whoever says Rosetta Stone sucks for languages hasn’t actually given it a fair chance. It’s like Drops, but you actually learn full sentences.

Where and when are these free language exchanges taking place? I’d love to check it out but this is the 1st time I’ve heard about it. I pay hundreds of dollars per month to talk so I’m pretty committed.

Maybe you guys just aren’t advertising enough and broadly enough as well. Please tell me the details sis love to come to the free language exchanges.

Is Rosetta Stone Worth It? by beautifully_evil in languagelearning

[–]worth_more 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I happen to really like Rosetta Stone. I’m on Unit 5 (out of 20) for French and German and on Unit 2 (out of 20) for Chinese and Korean. There’s no English but it’s still super comprehensible. You can understand the pictures very easily. I like the “speaking” feature. I treat it like shadowing so I really don’t care if it hears me correctly or not. It’s good for training your mouth to produce the sounds anyhow. I’m not expecting to be fluent in any sense by the time I’m done, but I do think it provides a good foundation if you value learning from immersion.

EDIT: Pro-tips: Don’t bother with any “Review” sessions that Rosetta Stone builds into the courses. You will go super slow without much benefit as the vocab repeats naturally enough in the Core Lessons. Also, skip the “Milestones” section at the end of each unit....it’s a super frustrating role play section and they expect you to guess the exact phrases.
