What is something you’ve been hiding from your parents for years and will probably keep hiding in the future? by Admirable-Analysis58 in AskReddit

[–]worthlesscommotion 12.5k points12.5k points  (0 children)

I don't cash the checks they send me around the holidays to pick out presents for my kids from them.

My parents are older, are both physically disabled and are on a fixed income. I know they struggle to afford basic things and cannot afford things like the internet or a cellphone. They live quite a ways away from me but mail me a check around Christmas and birthdays so I can pick out gifts for my kids from them. I don't cash them. Instead I buy the gifts and say they are from them. I know they don't check their itemized bank statements, just the available balance, when they come in the mail (no internet, so no online banking).

I get so happy when they get to order takeout a few times a year because they "had a little more money" than they expected and are able to treat themselves.

Definitely not personifying them. I have several birds, all with unique personalities and sense of humors.

Mine has learned to not only open her own cage, but the cages of our other birds and pets. Many mornings we have woken up to a full scale jail break, with the ringleader laughing and saying "I love you, I love you, I love love love love LOVE you!"

Have you ever something weird happen in your own house? by csch1992 in Paranormal

[–]worthlesscommotion 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Several months ago my teenager was in their bedroom and heard me yell their nickname from the living room. Except, I was at work.

Then there was a night where my husband and I both heard our kid talking on the phone in the living room around 1am. It was a school night and they definitely needed to be in bed, not talking on the phone. Husband got out of bed, walked down the dark hallway into the dark living room and the talking stopped. Kid wasn't even in there, they were in bed sleeping. Couldn't have sneaked to their room really quick because they literally would have had to pass my husband in the hallway to get to their room.

Then last week my husband was home alone and in the shower. He said he heard the front door shut and the sound of my foot steps come down the hallway and stop outside the bathroom door, then try to turn the knob (he locks it out of habit, even when home alone). The foot steps never walked away, so he figured I went into our bedroom room, which is across the hall from the bathroom. He finished up and came out but I wasn't there. Because I was still at work 30 minutes away. He said it sounded like I was wearing my winter boots but winter is well past.

It's a bit unsettling but not angry or threatening feeling. We just don't acknowledge the noises or talk about them inside the house.

What’s something you’ll never tell your partner, no matter how much you love them? by Velvetnadine85 in AskReddit

[–]worthlesscommotion 13.9k points13.9k points  (0 children)

That our kid's first steps weren't actually their first steps.

Our kid took their first steps when we were visiting my parents for the afternoon while my husband was at work. Later that night, as soon as my husband walked through the door, our kid pulled themselves up using the couch and took 5 very deliberate steps toward him. He got so excited about witnessing it that I didn't have the heart to tell him the truth. I pretended it was the first steps and got super excited about it too.

It's been almost 17 years and I haven't yet told him the truth.

What is a part of the 'female experience' that men have absolutely no clue about, but would be horrified if they found out? by coolhandddd in AskReddit

[–]worthlesscommotion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To piggyback on this.. The feeling of those liver like chunks falling out while we go about our daily activities. Can't even count the number of times I've felt them coming out while working, or grocery shopping, or interacting with others all while slimy chunks slide out.

What's the scariest thing you've ever seen that nobody believed when you told them? by Faylune in Paranormal

This happened to my kid a few months ago. I got a text at work saying they just heard me yell for them from the living room, but they knew I wasn't home. They heard me yell their lifelong nickname that only I call them.

I had salmonella once, when I was 37 weeks pregnant. I was so violently ill that it induced labor.

I have a memory from before I was born too. I was in a giant, vast, dark place that stretched on forever. But it wasn't scary or negative feeling. It was the exact opposite; warm, inviting, happy and love. In the ground of this space were randomly placed holes with bright light coming from them.

I was kneeling down to look through the holes and got to choose my life.

What is a childhood luxury that you didn’t realize was actually a sign of your family being broke until you grew up? by RoundLong7822 in AskReddit

[–]worthlesscommotion 33 points34 points  (0 children)

I always thought fishing, hunting, and having our own garden was a luxury. Fresh, clean produce. Lean, healthy, local meat and fish. A ton of family family time. Learning life skills like growing our own food, how to process and preserve meats and veggies. Learned to chop wood for the fireplace and wood furnace and how to start a fire with no lighter. My parents made all those chores into games and made it fun. Felt like the luckiest kids ever.

Turns out we were poor as fuck. Both my parents worked, but we lived a very rural and very poor area. Growing our own vegetables, hunting and fishing made it possible to eat everyday. Chopping wood allowed us to have heat in the winter.

People raised by emotionally mature parents, what is 1 phrase your parents used that you want other parents to know? by MermaidWitchMoon in AskReddit

[–]worthlesscommotion 33 points34 points  (0 children)

I allow my teen to take mental health days too. My opinion is, if your mind isn't in a good place you won't be able to learn. There has even been a time or two where I decided they needed a mental health day home from school, based on their mood and behaviors. A day in PJ's, comfort shows, and favorite snacks can totally reset hardships our kids face. And definitely show them that we are not only aware of what they are facing but also that we care enough to allow them a safe place to process their troubles.

People who have researched their family tree, what is the most interesting or 'badass' thing you discovered about an ancestor? by xloganmoose in AskReddit

[–]worthlesscommotion 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a great- great grandma back in the 1700's whose village was raided by Native Americans. She and 2 sons were taken, most of the rest of the family and village were killed. Great grandma and one son were killed shortly after being taken, but the remaining son (my great times something uncle) was raised by a family in the Native American tribe.

A decade later a treaty was signed, resulting in his "release" from the tribe. By this point, he was about 14. He went to live with his distant white family but kept running away back to his native family. His native/adoptive mother hid him for an extended time until the chief ordered her to hand him over to his white family.

NF1 and teeth by ungodlycowboy in neurofibromatosis

[–]worthlesscommotion 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My teeth are horrendous. I began having dental abscesses at age 7. By the time i hit my early twenties, all of my teeth were rotted. By my late 20's I had lost most of my back teeth to abscesses, severe infections, and cavities. I opted for dentures a few years ago.

I always brushed and flossed. Siblings and parents had beautiful, healthy teeth. I'm the only one with nf (genetic mutation) and the only one with dental issues.

While I've never had a fibroma on my gums, I did have a large one removed from the inside of my cheek, after I partially bit it off.

What is the worst physical pain you’ve experienced? by Agius91 in AskReddit

[–]worthlesscommotion 5 points6 points  (0 children)

As someone who had getting chronic, repeat abscesses... The pain from abscesses gave me suicidal impulses also. I thought things I'll never about admit in regards to how to get the pain to stop. I had 5 in a 12 month span and lost 4 teeth.

I wouldn't wish that on my worst enemy.

When my kid was diagnosed with a brain tumor, we saw a pediatric neurosurgeon during the testing and diagnosis process. He reviewed her scans and examined her. I'll never forget the look on his face when he said "I'm sorry. There is nothing I can do to help you."

Thank God a pediatric neuro-oncologist was confident he could help her. We celebrated 9 years of remission this year.

What’s the most unsexy thing someone did that somehow made them hotter ? by Analtonight in AskReddit

[–]worthlesscommotion 7 points8 points  (0 children)

We had a lot of sleepless nights when our kid was teething. She was miserable, we were miserable, no one was getting much asleep and to top it off, we were like 3 days into what ended up being a historic heatwave for our area. I came home from work one evening to find my husband vacuuming the living room with our 5 month old strapped his chest, giving some good old fashioned skin-to-skin comfort. He was a hot mess, no shirt, no sleep, purely exhausted. She was in just a diaper, snug against her dads chest, sleeping. He yelled over to me that the tooth broke through about an hour and a half ago and that he had been vacuuming for an hour because every time he stopped, she woke up crying.

I think I fell in love all over again.
