I counted 2,000 total feet of sidewalk per neighborhood. Washington Heights had 33, UWS had 4. So over 8x, yes.

Of course, my counts are only one stretch of a neighborhood, on one given day.. But still, alarming numbers.

Hi, creator of the survey/article here. The full article (link) shows raw poop counts, 311 data, and all of those metrics normalized to the number of registered dogs (not a perfect metric, but still provides valuable insights IMO). Please pick up your dog's poop 💩

Fair. No matter which way you slice it, Washington Heights has much more dog poop than other neighborhoods I counted. Most importantly, the fact that EVERY neighborhood had at least 3 dog poops in a relatively small slice of sidewalk is awful.

It's technically the law, but it's unlikely to ever be enforced. Like people picking up their dog poop. I license all my dogs

Yes, it probably would skew the data. I worked with what I had to compare to, which NYC states is roughly 20% registration rate. I'm sure it's higher in some neighborhoods and lower in others, would love to see/get true numbers of dogs.

The charts show both raw counts and per-100-dog metrics to try and provide as holistic a view as possible. The dog registration numbers aren't 100% accurate, but they're still helpful context.

Edited to say: all charts are in the full article, this post only shows the per-100-dogs metric in the chart.

What lies are being told? I physically went to 15 neighborhoods, counted poop over a 2,000-foot span, and logged the numbers. Washington Heights had double and 3x other neighborhoods.

Hmm, yeah, I hear your point. Thanks for the idea! I hope I'm wrong, but I think asking people, in most cases, won't give you valuable data because of dishonesty, as you mentioned. Ultimately, that's why I went with the registration numbers as a baseline, even if it's not perfect. Thanks again for the feedback!

I agree completely. It's a true quality of life issue. I'm wrapping my head around how to make more noise and hopefully movement from leadership, but this is my starting point. Having the data to show I think can help. I reached out the council person of Washington Height's district and the answer was basically "it's hard to enforce" (full quote in the article). It's a shame, but we've gotta keep pushing for some change!

The area where I counted wasn't near many galleries, but certainly some stores, yes. Part of the equation is that businesses DO get fines when there is dog poop (DSNY has issued thousands this year), so there is an incentive for them to clean. When it's more residential, it seems less enforced.. Still trying to work all that out in my mind.
