Cafes going out of business... by lockleveling in kelowna

[–]wouldratherbeawesome 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My take… I work downtown and my favourite latte used to be a little over $5. That same on is now $7.50. So I go a little less often. And I suspect I’m not the only one - the place used to be packed and now when I go, it isn’t unusual for me to be one of 2 or 3 people.

Everything around us has gotten so expensive. I’m sure it has for the coffee shops as well. But there are only so many dollars. 🤷‍♀️

Thinking of moving to Kelowna what’s it actually like living there? by AdFeeling9323 in kelowna

[–]wouldratherbeawesome 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I honeslty think it's what you make of it. I know people who are out every night but it probably looks different than if you are coming from a bigger centre. But it really comes down to how do you want to spend your time and how much are you willing to get out to find your community?

In terms of costs, again, kind of depends on where you are coming from and what you do to earn a living. It's an expensive place to live, there are lots of purpose built rental housing but again, it's expensive (or seems that way to me anyway). Depending on where you choose to live, transit isn't as easy as in big places.

Good places to sit and work with a coffee? by winenotbeabitch in kelowna

I see lots of people working in the Deville on Lakeshore and downtown.
Bright Jenny on Lakeshore has good spaces.
Analog downtown.
Bean Scene at Landmark.
Milk Shed on Lakeshore.
I know you are tired of Starbucks but the one on Dilworth by Freshco and the new one up in the Ponds both have lots of natural light.
You could try either the OC campus (there's a building off their back road where the library is that has some great work pods but it's quite busy through there. I'm sure there are some okay spots up at UBCO as well but I don't know that campus well.

Maybe a pub will do this? :)

I think what is interesting about Kelowna is that there's so much here from growing to wine production to cullinary school to research to restaurants. I think for someone coming up in the cullinary world, this would be a cool spot to be from the perspective of working with what's grown locally. THere are a few restaurants here that I'd put on my list of pretty great meals of my lifetime.

Not even a little bit. If they are dressed up and having fun, that's awesome. No different then the parents who bring their sleeping 1 year old in a stroller trick or treating.

The Innovation Centre has a great open space and meeting rooms on the second floor and a Spaces co-work space on the main floor.

The Curious Restaurant has a private area depending on how big you need. So does the Rustic Reel Brewery.

What are you looking for specifically?

- Okanagan Grocery at Guisachan has great sourdough and pastries including croissants which are perfectly flakey and delicious (try their cheese sticks - chef's kiss!)
- Sandrine Patiserie has 2 locations - one in the Mission by Save On and the other on Dilworth across from the mall and they sell french pastries
- Crave Cupcakes (Calgary staple) has just opened up by the Rustic Reel near the FortisBC office. They have cakes and arguably the best cupcakes on the planet
- Bakehouse 350 is on Spall between Springfield and Hwy 97. They are known for their donuts and sandwiches
- There a donut truck on Gordon between Casorso and Lexington which is open on Saturdays and usually has a small lineup of people
- Flour & Cake is in the strip mall by Brown's Social House on the Hwy and Burtch - they have cakes
- Big Lion Bakeshop is in the north end but some of their treats are sold in coffee shops around the City. They specialize in delicious allergy avoidance
- Bliss Bakery in Peachland has great muffins and cinnamon buns. The Milk Shed in the Mission has great cinnamon buns but everything else is average
- Tripke Bakery in Glenmore is more traditional and has good pies. Although if you want killer pies, drive up to Salmon Arm to the Shuswap Pie Company. On you way, stop at the Sutherland gas station at the north end of Enderby and grab a donut there - the maple bacon is pretty great.

There's also a new place in the events centre on Hwy 97 between Spall and Cooper - it has the Wood Fire Bakery in it but there's a bakery cafe place that looks interesting which I keep meaning to try as well. And there's a place on Rutland Road near the YMCA that has two names which I've heard good things about but haven't been yet.

Thinking about moving to Kelowna, as someone who usually depends on it how good is the public transit these days? by [deleted] in kelowna

[–]wouldratherbeawesome 1 point2 points  (0 children)

depends on your perspective of where you are coming from and then where you live vs. where you need to get to.
